HP: For a better world

Chapter 17: Potions and Aragog

Winster reluctantly put the potion back into the cauldron, but was mercilessly kicked out of the office by Snape, who told him not to come over and get in the way before Halloween.

Winster had no choice but to leave in disgrace and return to his dormitory. He took out a small bottle of residual potion from his arms. The crystal clear glass bottle contained a pool of dark-black liquid, which turned red and green when he shook it with his fingers.

"Is it because the medicinal properties cannot be integrated?" Winster frowned in distress.

The potion in the potion bottle looks like a whole, but if you shake it slightly, it becomes clearly separated.

This is clearly a case of conflicting medicinal properties that cannot be combined together, just like the two extremes of ice and fire cannot meet.

Once they meet, they will fight fiercely just like in the illusion, until one side completely defeats the other.

——I still have to consider changing to another herb, either replacing the wheatgrass powder, or adding another potion ingredient to mix it.

Small cow grass ground into powder can protect oneself from curses.

Snape asked Winster to use familiar materials to think about creating his first potion. It seems that the requirements are not high, but the ratio of each medicinal material, the timing of adding the quantity, and the number of stirring cycles are all big problems.

Because he can feel the magic power surging in his body, Winster is more adept at controlling the temperature and proportion of the potion.

But Snape's requirement was to use the existing materials to figure out something new. Winster had to set a tone first, so that he could start to derive the required materials for the potion he wanted to make.

The first thing that came to Winster's mind was a curse.

Curses are a very common type of magic in the Harry Potter world, from Voldemort's curse in the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, the werewolf curse suffered by Remus Lupin, Dumbledore being tempted by the Resurrection Stone Horcrux, to some minor curses between students.

There are even more common potion materials related to curses, such as violets can absorb malice and evil spells, dry nettles can expel and resist evil forces, and wormwood can prevent curses and represent loyalty. In Harry Potter, many of the effects of herbs come from legends. Aconitum is used as wolfsbane potion because someone once smeared it on arrows and believed it could kill werewolves. Lilies are used as a powerful sleeping potion because it is said that lilies are related to the underworld.

The ingredients of the demulcent written by Rowling include not only sneezeweed essence, but also barnacle flowers.

(Barnacle flowers can be used as a sedative potion)[1]

The lacewing flies in the compound potion play on words, suggesting the exchange and interweaving of two faces (identities).

Winster had seen the original inspiration recorded by White. White's idea was a blocker, which was directly aimed at curing the werewolf curse. Snape once commented that this idea was full of Muggle thinking constraints.

Winster had never thought of trying the most difficult method of curing a werewolf right from the start. You know, so far only wolfsbane potion can suppress the violent savagery of a werewolf during the full moon, and it is extremely expensive and difficult to endure. He was not so arrogant as to think that he could succeed with just his limited knowledge of the magic world.

Winster only thought of vaccines. If it could be prevented before being hurt, perhaps not so many people would be transformed. Since werewolves can't afford potions, they can let those who may be hurt buy them. But what supports Winster's belief that he can do it actually comes from an important plot in the original book - Sirius once said that the four robbers completed the Animagus, one of the highest achievements of Transfiguration, and transformed into animals to accompany the werewolf Lupin, and they would not be infected in the process.

Animagus means wizard animal. So if a wizard is disguised as an animal to trick the werewolf curse, can it prevent the person bitten from becoming a werewolf?

None of this is known yet.

But what Winster could find was that, because Animagus is one of the highest achievements in Transfiguration, there are only 7 people publicly registered in this century, and there are very few records of Animagus being able to avoid most magical influences, only a pile of failed cases, such as the origin of the famous five-legged monster. This also means that no one has studied the prevention of the werewolf curse from the perspective of Animagus, and it is feasible.

Although Animagus requires advanced skills, Winster only needs the idea.

For example, the single leaf of mandrake that the Animagus initially needs to hold under the tongue is an extremely precious herb that symbolizes birth or germination within the human body.

Mandrake is not only a necessary material for many antidote potions, but also a dicotyledonous plant. Mandrake single leaf refers to one of the two cotyledons produced when the mandrake just germinates. Pulling out a cotyledon will cause the mandrake to gradually lose its vitality, resulting in the loss of an entire mandrake, which leads to its high price.

The hawkmoth pupa symbolizes metamorphosis, meaning the process of the Animagus sprouting and transforming from the inside of the body to the outside.

In fact, it is a change from one identity to another. What Winster wants to do is to use more common materials to achieve the exchange of two identities, the shedding of the outside and the inside, and the effect of protection and expulsion.

This means Winster might need lacewings, boomslang skin, wormwood infusion, cow grass, or dried nettle.

This is just the most basic possible potion material. After a month of experimentation, Winster has deduced the proportions, boiling time, and number of stirring cycles required for lacewings and African tree snake skin to achieve stability and effectiveness. However, in determining the "protective" effect, a conflict occurred between cow grass and dry nettle.

——Dried nettle has the effect of resisting and expelling evil forces.

The red color swallowing up the green liquid in the medicine is the result of a violent conflict between the dry nettle and the cowgrass, not just the unknown efficacy of the herbal medicine caused by the number of stirring circles.

Winster took out some of the liquid medicine, put it into the analytical instrument, and chanted magic spells to assist in the analysis.

But as soon as the red and green colors were separated from the liquid, a violent reaction occurred again, burning out the analytical equipment.

Winster had to give up the detailed analysis for the time being and prepare to change the ratio of wheatgrass powder to dry nettle to see if this was the cause of the violent conflict.

Winster turned off the light in the dormitory and thought about the potion, completely forgetting that he was still bothered by the things that had been forgotten today. Perhaps for him, it was enough for just one person to understand his fear.

Winster is not White, they are two different flowers blooming from the same tree.

After a few days, Winster tried several proportions of the potion but all failed. He could only helplessly announce that there must be some part of the cow grass or dry nettle that could not be blended, and he had to replace it with wormwood infusion and re-adjust it.

The unsuccessful potion creation made Winster decide to go out and relax again.

Snape just happened to reveal that Lucius Malfoy had failed to persuade the school board to dismiss Hagrid, so he went to the Ministry of Magic to make trouble. Hagrid might have heard some news, and the shrinking potion had been given for a while, so Hagrid should have brought Aragog out, right?

Winster thought, and took a few bottles of shrinking potion to visit Hagrid.

Hagrid was feeding lettuce leaves down the throat of a Flobberworm. There was a wonderful sense of contrast as his thick fingers nimbly performed this extremely delicate task, which was really unexpected.

"Hey, Hagrid, are we going to continue learning how to feed Flobberworms in the next class?" Winster greeted him, looking embarrassed. Ever since Hagrid almost had a serious teaching accident in the first class, he didn't dare to bring more dangerous and exciting magical animals to class. Winster and his friends could only learn how to take care of Flobberworms in class after class.

——Winster couldn't understand why the insects couldn't just eat the leaves themselves, but the students had to use their fingers to stuff them down their throats one by one.

That was boring as hell. Although Flobberworm slime was a very useful ingredient for potions, Winston couldn't in good conscience say that feeding worms was fun.

You know, not only the Gryffindors are tired of the boring courses, but even the Slytherins complain a lot, especially the young masters and young ladies, who feel that they are wasting their time.

Hagrid looked up when he heard the voice, "Oh, Winster, you're here", he lowered his head again and stuffed some chopped vegetable leaves into the Flobberworms, which choked and rolled their eyes.

But Hagrid didn't notice. He hurriedly stuffed the last bit of vegetable leaves into his mouth before standing up to greet Winston and saying, "Yeah, Flobberworms, that's good. Raising Flobberworms is also a science." He murmured, as if trying to convince himself, his eyes always on the ground.

There were only clumps of weeds on the ground.

Winster sighed, "Can't we change to some other animals? - For example, Bowtruckle?" Winster said, "I heard their voices near the Forbidden Forest a few days ago. There are definitely some in the forest."

Hagrid stammered, "What if, what if it scratches another student's face - you know, injuries are inevitable when dealing with magical creatures." He twisted his fingers, looking embarrassed.

"But you can't always stop us from learning other things, right? Since we can't avoid it, shouldn't we learn more?" Winster said with a headache.

"But, but..." Hagrid hesitated.

Winster advised him, "Just take good protection. The scratches of the Bowtruckle only need distilled essence. To protect the eyes, we can wear protective glasses - the Quidditch team is not short of them."

The Bowtruckle is a peaceful, extremely shy creature that feeds on insects, but if the tree in which it roosts is threatened it will leap down upon any wizard attempting to destroy its home, gouging out their eyes with its long, sharp fingers.[2]

Hagrid hesitated for a long time before finally agreeing, "Okay... You're right, Winster. I can't just give up because of an accident that almost happened."

Hagrid has always dreamed of becoming a professor of Care of Magical Creatures. This year he finally got his wish, but this happened.

Winster then smiled, "I guessed that your shrinking potion was almost used up, so I came to see you and brought a few new bottles of potion." He said briskly, and saw a spider hiding next to a clay jar by the window of the cabin and peeking.

"Is that Aragog?" asked Winster. The spider couldn't hide its huge claws. It was a giant acromantula.

"Oh!" Hagrid also became happy and took the shrinking potion that Winster brought him. "I think so too. I should let Aragog see you. He has been blind for a while. If it weren't for your idea, I don't know how to slowly heal his eyes. There are all his descendants there, surrounding Aragog and not letting me get too close to him."

Winster walked over, and Aragog looked at him. The eight eyes rolled creepily, and the pincers were huge, comparable to Winster's fist - this was already the juvenile form of the Acromantula, and it was hard to imagine how huge an adult Acromantula would be.

"Ah," drawled Aragog, "you're the wizard student Hagrid said helped me?"

Winster nodded, "I think so. I gave Hagrid the potion in his hand."

Hagrid stood by and watched with a smile.

Aragog gave Winster a scrutinizing look, his pliers clicking involuntarily, and then he said to Hagrid, "I've seen a few of what you call Bowtruckles, a bunch of noisy little branches, on the tree that's the first to see the dawn in the west of our territory."

It sent Hagrid away. "Well, it's just the two of us now, wizard."

Winster calmly cast a few protective spells on himself. Although they were not as powerful as the armor spell, they should be enough to deal with this spider as big as a washbasin.
