Traveling through the famine, I stockpiled supplies like crazy
Chapter 65: Collecting beans
The next morning, after washing up, the two of them took sickles and went to the wasteland to start harvesting beans.
Harvesting beans is more troublesome than harvesting corn! Bean plants are shorter, so you need to bend over all the time, which is more tiring!
Hold the beans with one hand and cut them with a sickle with the other hand. Pile the cut bean stalks together and go home to dry them in the sun later for good luck.
The two of them kept cutting until noon before they stopped. Xu Han put the beans into the space, then carried them home and spread them on the ground to dry.
After a short lunch break, they continued to cut beans until it was completely dark and they could no longer see anything. Only then did they go home.
We only harvested about two acres of beans today, and there are still some left. We will be able to harvest almost all of them by tomorrow morning.
After a simple dinner in the evening, they didn’t even bother peeling corn because they were so tired. They took a shower and went straight to bed and fell asleep!
The next day, Xu Han got up as soon as it was light, thinking that she must harvest all the beans in the field this morning.
Supporting his tired body, he got up and started to get busy again.
Another morning passed, and the two finally harvested all the beans in the field.
After returning home, Xu Han was so hot that she didn't even want to eat. After taking a shower, she lay down on the bed and took a nap.
Autumn harvest is really tiring. If the crops in the fields are not harvested in time, the bean pods will burst when exposed to the sun.
So even though I am very tired every day and don’t want to work at all, I can’t stop and rest.
During these two short days, the sun was very strong every day. After being exposed to the sun, when we were harvesting beans at noon today, the pods were dry and bursting.
Fortunately, I have finally harvested all the beans and can finally take a break.
When she woke up, Lu Chuan was no longer around. Xu Han heard some knocking sounds in the yard. Lu Chuan must be pounding beans outside.
The harvested beans all come with stalks, so the beans and stalks need to be separated.
The beans are very dry after being exposed to the sun. If you hammer the pods slightly, they will burst and the beans will fall under the straw.
Every time the hammer hits, you can hear a rattling sound, which is the sound of bean pods exploding.
When Xu Han came into the yard, she saw Lu Chuan hitting bean stalks with a stick as thick as his arm.
"Do you have any cylindrical stones at home? It would be faster to use stones to crush the beans. Hammering the beans like this is too tiring and my arms can't take it!" Xu Han asked hurriedly when she saw this.
"There are no round stones. I forgot to buy one in advance! My family has never grown crops before, and we haven't bought these tools!"
"I didn't think it through. I didn't even think of it. I'll go outside to see if there is anything suitable and bring one back. I remember there are a lot of stones on the hillside over there!" After saying this, Xu Han walked out.
After searching for a long time, he still couldn't find a suitable stone. Just when Xu Han was about to go home, he saw a stone covered by vegetation.
It is about 100 cm high and 50 cm in diameter. Isn't this size just right?
Xu Han hurried over to take a look, first clearing away all the weeds and branches covering the stone, and then he could see the appearance of the stone clearly.
Overall, the size is right, but it's not very smooth and has some bumps.
It doesn’t matter. Xu Han remembered that there were stonemason’s tools at home. She could go home and fix it herself. It’s better to have something than nothing.
Xu Han put the stone into the space and walked towards home.
"Look what I found? But it's not very smooth. Let's use tools to fix it and see if it can be used!" Xu Han took out the stone and said to Lu Chuan.
"This is great, the size is just right. It doesn't matter if it's not smooth, I can just chisel it a little with a tool, this saves a lot of effort!"
After saying that, Lu Chuan went to the tool room to get a chisel and started chiseling the stone.
I have to say that the tools at home are really complete. Maybe it’s because I’m the only one living around here. If I need any tool, it’s not available at home and I can’t borrow it.
So you might as well prepare a set of tools that you may never need, so that you can use them directly when you need them, which makes it much more convenient to do anything.
Otherwise, if you need something, you have to go to the county town to buy it, which is also very troublesome. It is better to make it yourself with tools! Over time, my skill in making tools has become better and better.
Xu Han watched Lu Chuan chiseling the stone and couldn't help, so she said
"I'll go to the bean field and see if there are any fallen beans. I'll pick them up so they won't fall on the ground and get wasted!"
"Okay, go ahead!"
Xu Han came to the field carrying a backpack, and after some searching, she actually found some beans. After searching all over the field, she picked up a whole basket full of bean stalks!
After processing these beans, they are enough to cook several dishes. Of course, we can't waste them, so we take them all home!
"Look, I picked up so much! I was very careful when harvesting, but some still fell on the ground!" Xu Han said to Lu Chuan.
"It's quite a lot! Enough for several meals." Lu Chuan helped pour the beans in the basket into the bean pile.
Then he started grinding the beans with the stone roller he had just made.
Just push the stone roller over the bean pile and roll it back and forth, and the bean stalks will be flattened in a short while.
Then use a large iron fork to pick up the bean stalks, turn them over, roll them back and forth, pick them up again, and roll them again. Repeat this twice.
Then sweep the beans that have fallen aside and dry them separately tomorrow. Don’t put them under the bean stalks. This way they will dry faster.
Roll the remaining bean stalks a few more times in this way tomorrow, and almost all the beans should fall out.
After everything was sorted, it was time for dinner. Xu Han took out white flour buns, beef soup, stir-fried chicken, tomato beef brisket and cold cucumber from the space, and the two began to eat.
After three days of rushing to harvest, both of them looked more or less haggard.
The autumn harvest is mainly about mountain products. There are still two or three months before winter comes! This means that the two of them need to continue to be busy for two or three months before they can have a complete rest.
Fortunately, there is nothing left in the field that needs to be harvested, and the remaining things that need to be picked are some dried fruits or wild fruits. It won't be as tiring as the past two days.
After eating, everyone lay down on the rocking chair. No one wanted to move, so they just lay there quietly without saying a word.
Xu Han, who had never actually experienced manual autumn harvest, was completely exhausted.
Although Lu Chuan was very tired from doing heavy work hunting every day, he had never experienced a real rush to harvest, so his condition was only slightly better than Xu Han's.
