Chapter 55: Qingming Festival Sacrifice Legends and Reasons

Luo Ying asked again:

“Why do we have to worship our ancestors on Qingming Festival?”

Ding Zipiao replied:

"There is a touching story in history about ancestor worship during Qingming Festival!"

Luo Ying asked curiously:

"Oh.....what's the story?"

Ding Zipiao looked into the distance and said slowly:

"It is said that in the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Xian of Jin, the monarch of the State of Jin, had a young and beautiful concubine named Li Ji.

In order to allow her son Xiqi to inherit the throne in the future, she used a poisonous scheme to kill Crown Prince Shensheng.

In order to avoid the persecution of Li Ji, Shen Sheng's younger brother Chong'er fled the State of Jin and suffered humiliation along the way.

Duke Wen of Jin, Chong'er, had been on the run for many years, and during the most difficult times he had nothing to eat.

When his follower Jie Zitui saw Chong'er fainting from hunger, he felt sorry for him and secretly cut a piece of meat from his thigh to cook soup for Chong'er, saying to him: "My lord, you are the one who will lead us to conquer the country! Wake up!" When Chong'er regained his strength, he found that it was Jie Zitui who saved him and he was so moved that he burst into tears.

Later, Chong'er ruled the state of Jin and sealed off the city for those who had helped him, but forgot about Jie Zitui who cut his flesh. Jie Zitui said nothing and lived in seclusion in the mountains with his mother until someone reminded him: My lord, you forgot about Jie Zitui who was by the Daming Lake.

After being reminded by people around him, Chong'er then remembered Jie Zitui and felt guilty. He went to ask him to come out of the mountain in person, but Jie Zitui refused to come out. Then people around him suggested setting fire to the mountain, burning three sides and leaving one side, so that Jie Zitui would escape from that side.

But Jie Zitui and his mother were burned to death in the forest and refused to come out. Jie Zitui was still in the tree hole. He wrote a blood letter: I will serve you with my whole heart, and I hope you will always be clear-minded.

Duke Wen of Jin burst into tears and felt extremely guilty for setting fire to Jie Zitui. He later issued an order that no fire was allowed at this time of year and only cold food could be eaten to commemorate Zitui. The order was named Cold Food Festival, and the second day of the Cold Food Festival was named Qingming Festival.

Since then, Qingming Festival has evolved into a festival for worshipping and paying tribute to ancestors. "

Luo Ying asked again:

"Then why do we worship our ancestors during Qingming Festival?"

Ding Zipiao pointed at a large tree with lush branches and leaves in the garden and said seriously:

"What is the first prerequisite to ensure that this tree will flourish and bear abundant fruits?"

Luo Ying replied:

"It's light and rain, and nutrients?"

Ding Zipiao shook her head and said:

“Neither, this tree must have roots!

If there is no root, is it impossible for the tree to bear fruit?

Because the roots go deep into the ground, they can transport nutrients upwards. The better the root system grows, the more branches and leaves can grow, and the more fruits can be produced. "

Luo Ying nodded seriously, and Ding Zipiao continued:

“If we compare life to the tree of life today, buying a good house, driving a good car, having healthy family members, and doing well in study and career are equivalent to being like this tree with luxuriant branches and leaves and abundant fruits.

Then let me ask you, who are our roots? "

Luo Ying looked at her blankly, and Ding Zipiao continued:

“Our ancestors are our roots!

Because our ancestors accumulated virtue and provided us with nutrition.

That is why we can have everything we have today. Chinese people have a tradition that no matter whether they have achieved success or not, they will go home to worship their ancestors if they have the conditions. The bigger the business and the more money people make, the more particular they are about ancestor worship!

The root continuously supplies nutrients to the tree, allowing it to bear abundant fruit. But if there is no photosynthesis on the top to supply nutrients to the bottom, will the root rot? If the root rots, will the tree die?

In the same way, our ancestors continuously supply us with nutrients. If we do not return nutrients to our ancestors, the roots below our ancestors will slowly rot, and the family will not be rich for more than three generations and will disappear. Why do so many people not be rich for more than three generations?

Because the ancestors have died and no one has taken care of them for a long time, the roots have rotted! The Tao Te Ching says: Those who build well will not be uprooted, those who hold well will not be separated, and their descendants will continue to offer sacrifices to them.

Lao Tzu tells us that if we want the incense to continue to burn, there is one thing that must never stop. What is it that cannot be stopped by our descendants?

Sacrifice, if the sacrifice stops, the family will have no hope at all! Therefore, the more prosperous the family, the more grand and elaborate the sacrificial rituals! "

Luo Ying listened with great interest and said excitedly:

"Oh...it turns out there are so many details to pay attention to during the Qingming Festival!

No wonder in our real world, my clients from big companies, no matter how important their business is, have to stop during the Qingming Festival and concentrate on worshipping their ancestors!"

After a pause, Luo Ying continued to ask:

"What is the representative flower of the Qingming Festival?"

Ding Zipiao got down from the swing, took Luo Ying's hand and said:

"Come on, I'll take you to see it!"

Ding Zipiao brought her to a giant wisteria tree. Luo Ying was shocked by the huge plant. She had never seen a wisteria blooming so luxuriantly. All she saw was a brilliant lavender color hanging from the sky like waterfalls, with no beginning or end in sight.

It's just that the deep and light purple seem to be flowing, laughing, and growing constantly.

On the large purple banner, there were dots of silver light, like splashing water.

When you look closely, you will realize that it is the lightest part of each purple flower. Every spike of wisteria flowers has the upper parts blooming and the lower parts waiting to bloom.

The color is light on top and dark on the bottom, as if the purple has settled down and settled in the tenderest and smallest flower buds.

Each blooming flower is like a small fully spread sail, with a pointed bottom cabin under the sail, and the cabin is bulging; it is also like a smile that is about to bloom. Wisteria strives to stretch upward, climbing its life to an excellent state.

Clusters of wisteria flowers are quietly blooming, hanging down from the green leaves, like brocade that can be cut, like waterfalls that can be scooped up, so unrestrained and passionate.

This is the natural harmony of romantic spring. The elegant flowers are trembling, and you can hear the sound in the dim light. This is the confession of the plants that stick to their original nature.

The fragrance of flowers is densely diffused, thick and light, deep and shallow, as if flowing, laughing, and whispering.

Luo Ying watched with fascination and couldn't help but sigh:

"How can there be such beautiful flowers!"

After she finished speaking, she turned around and looked at Ding Zipiao and said:

“She looks just like my sister, I can’t take my eyes off her at first glance!

No wonder my sister is both the Qingming Flower Goddess and the Wisteria Flower Goddess!"

Ding Zipiao looked at Luo Ying with a charming smile on her face, and said quietly:

“Although it is so beautiful, it is called a desolate flower because there is a beautiful legend about wisteria, which says that it needs to grow around a tree trunk and cannot survive alone.

So some people say that the girl is the incarnation of the wisteria flower, and the trunk is the incarnation of the man. Wisteria lives for love, and dies without love... "
