Children of Loulan
Chapter 3 Behind the Help
Kuturuk listened to the little girl's words with a faint smile on his face, but his eyes were full of calculations. However, because Hanguli was too young and had not experienced much, she could not understand the deep meaning behind Kuturuk's smile.
Because in her eyes, Uncle Kuturuk is a good man. Ever since she met him, he has been helping her family. So, she respects this uncle from the bottom of her heart.
At this time, Kuturuk took out an IOU, looked at the siblings, and said:
"This is the last IOU! Every time your family paid back the money, it was your father who came to exchange for the IOU. So tomorrow, can you ask your father to come over?"
Although there is only one IOU, the number on it has to be changed every time I pay back the money. This is the last time!
Hanguli: "Okay, Uncle Kuturuk, my brother and I will get busy first!"
Kuturuk: "Okay, okay, our hardworking little Hanguli, don't tire yourself out. There are other helpers in the pharmacy. Take a rest when you are tired. Be sure to take care of your health!"
Seeing that Uncle Kuturuk cared about her so much, Hanguli was very happy and replied with an innocent smile on her face:
"Well, thank you Uncle Kuturuk!"
As she spoke, she pulled her brother out. When they were almost at the door, Kuturuk suddenly spoke again:
"By the way, girl, my uncle just slaughtered a sheep today. Take some mutton back to eat later!"
The brother and sister stopped and heard what Kuturuk said. Mamtim was so surprised that he couldn't close his mouth at first, and then he looked at his sister with joy, his heart pounding. After all, they really hadn't eaten meat for a long time. At the age of eight, he didn't understand the ways of the world, and what he was thinking was written on his face.
Seeing her brother's expression, Hanguli naturally understood his thoughts. But she was older after all, and knew that her family had already received many favors, so it was not good to take advantage of this uncle. She held her brother's hand tightly, thinking that she would buy some meat after getting the money from selling the red ganoderma. So, she smiled and waved her hand, saying:
"Thank you, Uncle Kuturuk. We accept your kindness, but we don't need the meat. There are many people in your family and they eat a lot!"
Kuturuk smiled and said, "Hey, why are you being so distant with your uncle, Hanguli? Your father works so hard as a laborer, he needs to eat meat to replenish his body, right? And your mother and brother also need to replenish their bodies! This meat is not for you alone!"
He said it sincerely, but Hanguli still refused:
"Thank you, Uncle Kuturuk. It's really not necessary. I will buy some meat to take home after I sell the red ganoderma!"
Hearing her refusal, Kuturuk pretended to be unhappy and said:
"What's wrong? Hanguli, do you think your uncle's meat is not good? Your uncle is so sad if you do this!"
After saying this, he showed a disappointed expression.
Hanguli waved her hands and explained:
"No, no, Uncle Kuturuk, you misunderstood me. That's not what I meant."
Kuturuk frowned again and asked, "What do you mean?"
Seeing that he seemed unhappy, Hanguli said nervously:
"I just feel that you have helped us so much, and I am sorry to take advantage of you again."
Kuturuk waved his hand and said, "Hey, don't say that, Hanguli. You treat your uncle as a family member. How can you be considered taking advantage of others when you eat meat with your family? Right?"
Hearing this, Hanguli was also stunned and didn't know how to answer. After all, she was only slightly more sensible than her brother. After all, she was still a child. She could only stammer:
"Ah, this...this..."
Kuturuk looked at the bewildered little girl and smiled. He touched the two little heads with one hand each and said:
"Okay, it's settled. Bring some meat home later and don't refuse uncle's kindness again, okay?"
Seeing that Kuturuk had said so, Hanguli didn't know how to refuse, so she had to accept it:
"Okay then, thank you Uncle Kuturuk, I'll ask my dad to come over early tomorrow."
Kuturuk nodded and said, "Okay, I'll wait for him here, you guys go and get busy!"
The brother and sister then turned around and walked to the backyard to continue helping to dry and grind the herbs.
Kuturuk straightened his body, rubbed his fingers with his hands behind his back, and looked at the backs of the two children with a smile, but the smile did not reach his eyes.
When they reached the backyard where there were few people, Maimaiti asked in a low voice:
"Sister, why didn't you want the meat just now? Uncle Kuturuk is such a nice person."
Although Mamtim is already eight years old and has read some books, those were all taught by his elder sister. His elder sister also told him the principles that his father taught him before. But he thinks that he should be good to whoever is good to him, so that those who are good to each other can be what Kuturuk calls "family" and can accept gifts from each other.
Hanguli looked at her brother who was full of doubts and said, "Dad said that in this world, except for mom and dad, no one will treat you well for no reason. If someone treats you well suddenly, they must have some ulterior motive."
Hearing this, Mamtim was even more puzzled and asked:
"Plot? What does he want from our family? We have nothing, but he has everything."
Hanguli frowned, shook her head and said:
"I don't know either. Although I don't think Uncle Kuturuk has any bad intentions, I still have to listen to what Daddy says."
Maimaiti nodded and frowned, as if he was thinking hard about something.
Hanguli: "Okay, don't think about it. Maybe Daddy has seen too many bad guys when he was working outside, so he wants to remind us more."
Then she pointed to the herbs drying in the middle of the backyard and said, "Go quickly and look through the herbs on that shelf and pick some."
At dusk, when the sun was about to set, Hanguli returned home with the meat sent by Kuturuk and the inferior medicinal herbs she got from the shopkeeper.
When Han's mother saw her daughter coming back, she was about to ask about the red ganoderma lucidum when she saw her daughter holding two bags of things. In the past, she only brought one bag of medicine back, but today she brought two bags. She thought that since she sold the red ganoderma lucidum today, her daughter might have used the money to buy something.
Han's mother asked, "Did you buy anything today?"
Hanguli shook her head and said, "Mom is not here. Uncle Kuturuk said he will wait for Dad at the pharmacy tomorrow and asked Dad to get the last IOU."
Han's mother asked curiously, "What are you holding in your hands?"
Hanguli said happily: "It's the meat sent by Uncle Kuturuk!"
Han's mother was surprised: "Ah? Why... did he bring meat?"
At this time, a man's voice came from the room, with a calm and unhappy tone: "Why did he suddenly give us meat? Do you want it if he gives it to you?"
It turned out that the man had already returned home from work, and Han's mother told him about her daughter's discovery of the red ganoderma. Han's father, who had not smiled in the past few days, also smiled when he heard that his daughter was so capable.
Hanguli heard the sound and walked into the house. She saw a thin man with dark skin, a full beard and a slightly bald head. It was her father. Hanguli smiled and said:
"Dad, we have paid off all the debts we owe. Go get the last IOU tomorrow!"
Han's father: "Well, your mother told me, I am with you now, why should I accept the meat he gave me?"
When the brother and sister heard this, their hearts skipped a beat. They could clearly feel that their father was not very happy.
Mamtim: "Dad, I originally refused, but Uncle Kuturuk said that if I didn't accept him, it would mean I despised him and didn't consider him a family member, and he would be very sad. I had no choice but to accept him."
Han's father smiled coldly: "Huh, family?"
Han's mother looked at the bewildered faces of the siblings, and then at her husband's obvious displeasure, she was also a little confused. Wasn't her husband quite happy when she told him that her daughter had found the red ganoderma?
But when she thought about how her family had been so poor all these years because of her health, and how her husband had been working non-stop to make money to pay off the debt, she felt a pang of pain in her heart. But since the children were all there, she couldn't say much, so she said to her brother and sister:
"It's getting late, go and cook."
After hearing this, the brother and sister quickly turned around and went to the kitchen to cook.
