Berserk, Total War: Second Son of Nobles
Chapter 589 The King Has a Question for You
The soldiers entered the Governor's Palace for a while and then turned back.
"Sir, the Governor is currently working. Please wait in the hall. I will notify you to come into the office when he is available."
Deco immediately stood up, dusted himself off, and followed the soldiers into the Governor's Palace.
After crossing the courtyard, the soldier led him into a spacious hall.
The hall had a high ceiling and several faded oil paintings of Helderland landscapes hung on the walls.
There were several rows of wooden chairs in the middle of the hall. Deco found a seat by the window and sat down, looking at the scenery outside the window bored.
The sunlight shines through the windows onto the hall floor, forming patches of light.
Deco watched the light spot move slowly across the floor, and time seemed to become infinitely longer.
His stomach began to growl. He had only eaten a few rye bread at the market outside the town that morning, which was not enough to fill his stomach.
He felt in his pockets, trying to find some dry food, but found that he had forgotten to bring any food in his haste when he left.
In this way, Deco sat in the hall for nearly two hours.
Until noon, the sun became scorching hot. He was so sleepy that his eyelids kept fighting each other and his head was nodding like a rattle.
Just as he was about to fall asleep, light footsteps were heard and a servant came to Deco's side.
"Sir, the Governor is waiting for you in his office. Your guards will need to wait here."
Deco immediately stood up, refreshed, and waved to the guards, indicating that they should wait here. Then he followed the servants along the corridor.
The corridor was winding. Deke followed the servant up a flight of stairs, turned a few corners, and finally came to a door.
"Governor, the person has been brought here."
The servant knocked on the door respectfully, then stood aside.
"Let him in."
A steady voice came from inside the door.
The servant opened the door sideways and Deke walked into the office.
The room was not small, about 20 square meters. In addition to the natural light coming in through the window, there was also an oil lamp in the corner.
Apart from the window, the room only had a bookcase, a desk, two chairs and a portrait of His Majesty King John of Helderland on the wall. The black, gray and red tricolor flags were hung on both sides, making it look solemn and majestic.
At this time, the man who claimed to be the governor was sitting in a high-backed chair behind the desk.
He was about fifty years old, of medium build, with a balding head and the few remaining strands of gray hair combed meticulously.
He wore a dark blue uniform with gold trim, modeled after the style of high-ranking Helderland officials, but the workmanship was crude, the gold embroidery had faded somewhat, and the fabric at the collar and cuffs was noticeably worn.
The desk was filled with various documents, and the papers were piled up in a mess. Some documents even fell to the ground. If you didn't know, you would have thought that this person was the governor of the province, in charge of a large area.
"Please take a seat."
The Governor looked up at Deco and pointed to the chair next to him.
Deco bowed slightly and sat on the chair.
He looked at the "Governor" carefully, and he had noticed something strange in his behavior and eyes.
"Governor, please introduce yourself."
Deco spoke first.
"I am Deco von Rhein, a merchant from Helmingen, specializing in spices and glassware."
"Ah, Mr. Deco, welcome to Brusca."
The Governor immediately stood up, walked around the desk, held out his hand, and had a warm smile on his face.
"I am Baron Bruso von Stein, Governor-General of Brusca, Helderland, and I serve directly under the command of His Majesty the King of Helderland."
Deco shook his hand gently and sat down again.
"Governor, it's a pleasure to meet you. I heard that Brusca Town is an important trade hub leading to the central part of the Yoda Empire, so I came here specifically to investigate business opportunities."
"That's right, that's right."
The Governor sat down again, folded his hands on the table, and his smile became even brighter.
"Although Brusca is remote, it has an important strategic location and huge commercial potential. You have arrived at the perfect time. We are vigorously developing trade with Helderland."
Deke picked up the teacup on the table and took a sip. The tea was slightly cold and had a hint of bitterness.
"Governor, how long have you been serving here?"
"It's been almost three years."
Bruso answered quickly, but there was a hint of hesitation in his eyes.
"It must have been hard for you to stay in such a poor place for three years."
"It's not hard. The people living here are also citizens of Helderland. Helping citizens is the duty of every Helderland official."
"well said."
Deke put down his teacup and his eyes fell on the portrait of the king on the wall.
"I heard that you were conferred the title by His Majesty himself?"
Brusseau leaned forward slightly, his hands unconsciously arranging the documents on the table.
"Yes, of course it was canonized personally by His Majesty John, the founder of the current Kingdom of Helderland and the only living saint of the God of Light on earth."
He emphasized, a hint of pride in his voice.
"Your Majesty is wise and perceptive. He knows that Brusca needs a loyal ruler."
Deco smiled slightly and didn't respond.
He noticed that when Bruso mentioned the king, a complex emotion flashed in his eyes, a mixture of admiration and a secret.
"Your Majesty the Governor."
Deke asked casually.
"Could you tell me how His Majesty chose you for this important position?"
Bruso's expression changed slightly, but soon returned to normal.
"Well..."
He cleared his throat.
"Your Majesty is wise. Seeing my numerous achievements in the battle against the Yoda Empire, he specially decreed that I be appointed Governor-General. I have aspired to serve the Kingdom since I was young. It is an honor to have your Majesty's trust."
Deke nodded thoughtfully, his eyes scanning the room.
His eyes finally fell on the black, gray and red tricolor flag. The corners of the flag were a little worn, obviously it was touched frequently.
"Your Majesty the Governor."
Deco suddenly said.
"I also have a letter of enthronement from His Majesty the King here. Please check to see if it is real or not."
Bruso's hand, which was holding the teacup, paused slightly, and a little tea spilled out.
He put down his teacup and looked up, a hint of panic flashing in his eyes. "Book of Canonization?"
Deco pulled out a parchment document from his pocket, slowly stood up, walked to the desk, and handed the document to Bruso:
"Look, His Majesty mentioned you there."
Brusseau took the document and glanced down. In an instant, his face turned pale and his hands began to tremble uncontrollably.
The document read: Deko is appointed as an agent to investigate fake Helderan officials in the Yoda Empire. If he encounters a prisoner attacking him or discovers that the prisoner is attempting to rebel, he can execute him first and then report.
Brusseau's gaze rested on the document for less than a second before he immediately recognized the seal of the Helderland Cabinet.
"This this..."
Bruso stammered and was unable to speak. Although it was already late autumn, beads of sweat oozed from his forehead and slid down his temples.
Deke took back the document expressionlessly and sat down again.
"Oh? You seem familiar with this document?"
“No, no, I…”
Bruso stood up in a panic and hit his knee on the corner of the table. He gasped in pain, but he didn't care about the pain.
"Sir, I...I confess to you!"
"Get up!"
Deke said coldly, his voice low and authoritative.
"I have something to ask you on behalf of His Majesty. You must tell the truth. If you falsify the information, you will be severely punished. Do you understand?"
