Berserk, Total War: Second Son of Nobles

Chapter 3 Obtaining Training for Thieves

The day when John's team returned to the military camp was neither too late nor too early, as someone had already brought the team back to the camp in advance. John first asked his men to stay on standby, and then went to the gate of the camp to explain their purpose. Because the camp was heavily guarded, John's mercenaries were not considered regular troops yet and therefore could not enter the camp.

The gatekeeper thought it was an attack by thieves. It was not until John explained and coordinated with the gatekeeper for a long time that John's troops were allowed to enter the barracks.

"Remember, put away your weapons when you go in, don't run around, and don't shout." John repeatedly restrained his troops to prevent their thieving habits from causing trouble.

After entering the barracks, John led the team to the parade ground and found the registered officer.

"Name"

"John Hohenzollern"

“Number of troops”

"One person"

When the officer saw so many people, he directly asked someone to check. After a series of verifications, it was proved that the number of troops was not false. The officer immediately found the quartermaster and asked the quartermaster to take John's troops to the camp and distribute supplies.

Because of the conscription, General Conseil ordered the expansion of the camp and the construction of new camps for the new soldiers to live in. Each camp can accommodate 400 people, so John's troops were assigned to the 10th and 11th camps. As for John, he returned to the original station to rest.

Before returning to the camp to rest, John took a special look at the soldiers in other camps. There were all kinds of people, including recruited farmers, ordinary mercenaries, bandits, and John even saw a team of hired knights, who seemed to be some nobles who had gilded themselves by earning military merits.

The next day, John received a notice that General Conseil would inspect the army's situation in three days and let the newly recruited troops march through the ranks.

"This general has a lot to do, but his military literacy is quite high," John thought. Marching in formation not only proves the army's obedience, tests the army's discipline and cohesion, but also keeps the formation from falling apart and maintains the army's morale.

After arriving at the military camp, John gave the general's orders to everyone, and in the chaos the troops were arranged into three square formations, 3 meters long and 20 meters wide. John was commanding from the far left in the front row.

"Do you know which is left and which is right?" John asked.

The thieves looked at each other and all of you said that you only had a big question mark about what was left and what was right.

"Stretch out what you think is your left hand," John gave the order again.

At this moment, some people stretched out their left hands, some stretched out their right hands, and some didn't know which hand to stretch out and just stood there in a daze.

"You, come here" John pointed to the right one.

"If you can't tell the left hand from the right, just look at him. His is the correct one." So everyone finally knew which side was left and changed their minds.

"Remember all of that. Now practice. If you stretch your arms incorrectly, you'll get beaten." John found a wooden stick and started training.

After a day of training, the thieves learned to walk in a line, turn left and right, and stop under the punishment of sticks. Although it only looked a little better, it was still progress.

However, when John checked the system, he found that the thieves' group had been given the prefix "well-trained" and the attribute "high morale" added to the end.

"It seems that training will also increase the attributes of the army," John thought.

So the next day, John launched Stick Education 2.0

Although it is more tiring, it is still effective. At least the formation is not as ugly as before.

John suddenly wanted to ask the thieves who could play instruments to play in the front row to add effect. So he started another intensive training. John wanted the thieves to sing, but they sang well, except that they sang "We Are the Black Army of Guye" (a famous song of the German Peasant Uprising). So he gave up the idea. It's better not to sing this thing, and it will be directly charged with heresy and treason.

Three days later, General Conseil reviewed the new army on a temporary platform built in the parade ground. Since the review was conducted in the order of returning to the camp, John's troops were in the middle of the whole army.

As the review was ready, General Conseil gave the order to start the review, and the entire army began to march. Due to the uneven quality of the army, the formations of the various phalanxes were also different. Some regular mercenaries were okay, at least they could march in unison. The phalanxes of the peasant bandits and the like, some became more and more scattered, some broke up in the middle, and some directly hit other teams.

When General Conseil saw this, he felt that the troops were getting harder and harder to lead, and his face became worse and worse. When the officers next to him saw this, they knew that someone was going to be beaten with a stick again.

Finally, it was John's team's turn to appear. With a wave of John's hand and the sound of the band, the entire army appeared before Conseil's eyes.

The troops were neat, well-trained, and even had military music, which was a pleasure to watch. This was General Conseil's first impression of the army.

When they reached the center of the platform, John shouted "Look to the right!" and the entire troop, except the band, turned their heads to the right in unison.

"A real army," Conseil thought. Compared to them, the troops reviewed before were just cannon fodder. General Conseil was extremely happy, as if he had met an old friend in a foreign land. He immediately asked, "Whose troops are these?"

"This is John Hohenzollern's army. They have 600 men. As for their origins, from what I can judge, they seem to be bandits," said the quartermaster.

"Bandits?" Conseil thought. This doesn't seem possible. Which bandits could be arranged in an orderly manner like an army and play music?

"As long as you can help me win the battle, I don't care where it comes from." Conseil waved his hand and directly gave John 100 gold coins. By the way, he gave John's troops a full set of Midland army equipment, which aroused the envy of his colleagues.

Back at the barracks, John's troops immediately began to change their equipment.

“This equipment is great.”

"It's a bit tight, not as fitted as before."

"Of course your pile of rags won't be tight."

"With these leathers on, we will be considered as part of the regular army."

Compared to the cheerful atmosphere in the military camp, the headquarters was very gloomy.

"General Henry's troops were dispersed by Yoda's Ram Charge Knights, and the attack on Fort Doldore was thwarted."

"What are these people doing? Midland's reputation is almost ruined."

"Where are the White Dragon Knights? Why aren't they here?"

"The new king has assigned his brother to the White Dragon Knights and sent him back to protect the capital, Windham."

"So it's our turn now?"

Listening to the officers' complaints, Conseil had an even greater headache. That's right, things were going well at the beginning of the Midland Hundred Years' War. How could it turn out like this, with each generation getting worse than the previous one?

"Everyone," said General Conseil.

"Now is a time of national crisis, and the situation on the front lines is unclear. We should do our best to repay His Majesty instead of complaining about our allies here."

After hearing the general's words, everyone stopped arguing and thought about what to do.

"The newly recruited troops should have been trained by now, so just send them out. Currently, the elite Yoda troops are all near the Doldorei, and the Yoda troops we have here are at best mediocre. Let them practice."

"Excuse me for being blunt, although the Yoda Empire's troops have suffered a lot after the Hundred Years of War, under the diligent governance of their monarch, they not only have standing troops, but also various knight orders, which are much better than the conscripted soldiers of Mitlan."

Conseil listened to the officers' answers, and after some thought, he decided that the army should continue to march, wipe out the Yoda army entrenched in the northeast of the kingdom, and then move south to join friendly forces to attack Doldore.
