Farmhouse life after traveling back to ancient times

Chapter 37 Returning to Mother’s Home

When they got home, Old Yang had already left. Lu Fanghai was busy packing his things. Du Wenxiu handed him the buns he had bought.

"I just arrived, and I don't know how much money I will have to spend to settle down. I only bought some vegetarian buns. You can fill your stomach first."

Lu Fanghai took it, bit off half of it, and said incoherently: "I met my father-in-law when I was looking for a house in the city before. He said that I would go to see them after I moved in. Do you think I should go there tomorrow?"

Du Wenxiu paused when he heard this, not knowing how to respond for a moment.

When Lu Fanghai came home and told her about Du Xiucai's incident, she was also resistant at the time. She was the daughter who was sold to Lu Fanghai. Would the Du family care whether she was dead or alive, or how she was doing? She just changed the subject vaguely. She had to move and had a lot of things to do, so she forgot about it.

Now Lu Fanghai brought it up again, probably he had kept it in mind.

Then go meet her family in this life.

Du Wenxiu nodded and said with a smile: "Then let's rest early today. Let's buy some things and go take a look tomorrow morning. Since the whole family has moved here, we have to go and have a look."

Seeing that she had relented, even though Du Wenxiu tried to stop him, Lu Fanghai still went to the Du family to say hello and said that he would take Xiuniang back to her parents' home the next day before returning.

We had just moved into a new house, so our belongings weren't complete yet. We had been sitting in the car for most of the day, and strolling around the streets for quite some time. Tired after a day's work, we lay down and fell asleep as soon as we lay down.

The next morning, the sounds of hawking on the street woke up the sleeping people.

Because there was no cooking at home yesterday, after getting up early and washing up, a few people went to the street to buy Hu cakes and white porridge to eat.

He went back and packed up a small jar of pickles, ready to take back to the Du family as a gift.

The county is not big, and the West City and the South City are not far away. For ordinary people, there is no such thing as never leaving the main gate or the secondary gate. The three of them chatted as they walked towards the Du family.

"It's so expensive. A bowl of porridge costs two cents, and Hu Bing costs another two cents. This meal costs fourteen cents. Let's start cooking early. Who can afford to eat like this?" Qiao'er felt sorry for the money Du Wenxiu had just given out, and her little face wrinkled.

Lu Fanghai patted Qiao'er's head affectionately and said with a smile: "Qiao'er, don't worry, I'm here. I've seen that there are people working at the dock every day, and the more you work, the more you get. I'm strong, so if I do more work, I can support you."

After leaving Taohua Village, Qiao'er relaxed a lot and no longer had the tense expression she had before.

Hearing what Lu Fanghai said, she quietly stuck out her tongue and said, "Brother, I will also help the family make money."

The family was talking and laughing as they walked down the street. Passing by a dim sum shop, Lu Wenhai walked in. Du Wenxiu knew what he was thinking but didn't agree. However, it was not a good idea to do anything out of the ordinary on the street, so she had to follow him in with Qiao'er.

Ignoring Du Wenxiu's wink, Lu Wenhai picked out two dim sum and packed them up, then paid sixty cents. Du Wenxiu was so angry that she left the house and ignored her.

He didn't take it seriously, turned around and went back into the cloth shop, took out a piece of blue cloth, and paid another two hundred coins. Qiao'er called Du Wenxiu who was walking alone in front, and turned around to see Lu Wenhai coming out with the cloth.

Du Wenxiu was helpless. Her family had just moved in and were spending money like water, and Lu Fanghai was spending so lavishly when visiting relatives. How would they live from now on?

"The snacks and pickles are enough. Why do you want to buy such expensive cloth? Even if you want to buy it, just buy a few feet as a token of your appreciation. Why do you have to buy a whole piece? I'm afraid you're going to piss me off to death." Du Wenxiu walked beside Lu Fanghai and complained viciously in a low voice.

Lu Fanghai chuckled and seemed to be in a good mood.

"Since you came home with me, I haven't even received a return visit. This is your return visit gift. It's not much, I can earn it back later."

Du Wenxiu just felt a terrible headache.

The adoptive parents of that family always beat and scolded their children as far as they could remember. Du Wenxiu was the illegitimate daughter of a concubine bought by Du Xiucai. Later, she was injured after giving birth and could not work, so Du's wife Le found an excuse to sell her. They went to the human market and bought a younger woman, saying that she was a concubine, but they used her like a maid.

Although she was a concubine's daughter in the family, she ate and lived like a maid. When Du Wenxiu was not even as tall as the stove, she helped to light the fire and cook.

It was really difficult for Du Xiucai to support his family with his salary. There were three rooms in a small courtyard. The main room was where Du's wife lived, the east wing was where Le's son Du Wenshan lived, and the slightly smaller west wing was where the concubine he bought and her daughter born after she came to the Du family lived. When Du Wenxiu was at home, he would just stay in the firewood pile in the kitchen for one night every day.

If Du Xiucai went to the west wing one night, his sister Du Wenchan would go to the kitchen and squeeze in with her.

Du Wenxiu, who was educated in the principle of father being the leader of his son, might still miss such a home, but Chen Xing, who has modern ideas, would not want to go back.

She also understood Lu Fanghai, who truly regarded himself as the son-in-law of the Du family, and bought these things to save Du Wenxiu's face.

But who would want him to use his own money to save face? Spending so much money to buy these things would make the Du family have nothing to say about it even if they couldn't afford to eat.

Who would care whether the daughter who sleeps on a pile of firewood at home lives a good life after getting married?

When they arrived at the Du family, Le warmly invited them to sit in the main room because they had brought so many things, especially the piece of blue cloth.

"Oh, I said that the Lu family was a good family. They took out ten taels of silver without blinking an eye. I knew that our Xiuniang would live a good life." She called her concubine A Luo to serve tea, and Le chatted with the three people from the Lu family with a smile on her face.

"Mother-in-law, I met my brother-in-law at the door yesterday. He said he would come to visit father-in-law today. Why are they not at home today?" Lu Fanghai asked.

The smile on Le's face froze, and she felt a little embarrassed. "Someone from the school came to call me today. Maybe he has something to do. I will call him back now. A Luo..."

He called A Luo in and asked her to go to the school to find Mr. Du and bring him home.

Du Wenchan secretly lifted the curtain at the door and looked inside. She was seen by Du's wife, who called her in and scolded her, and then asked her to meet her brother-in-law. After a while, Du Xiucai came back.

Lu Fanghai talked to Du Xiucai alone, while Du Wenxiu took Qiao'er and Du Wenchan to the west wing to talk.

Du Wenchan is two years younger than Du Wenxiu. When she was a child, her biological mother A Luo worked non-stop every day, so Du Wenxiu raised her half of the time. The two sisters spent every day together and had a very good relationship.

After finally having a chance to sit together and talk, Du Wenchan took out the snacks that her biological mother A'luo had secretly hidden for her and let them eat.

He also mentioned that his sister-in-law Jin went back to her parents' home early in the morning when she heard that they were coming, fearing that her mother-in-law would trick her into giving her money to buy food. Du Wenxiu smiled indifferently and said, "Just eat whatever is available. It's amazing that she is so stingy that she brought so many things with her family."

After talking for a while, they inevitably talked about marriage. The Du family could not afford the dowry, and no decent family was willing to marry a girl from the Du family.

Last year, Du Wenxiu was married to the Lu family. Du Wenchan, who was only two years younger than Du Wenxiu and over the marriageable age, couldn't help but worry about her own marriage.
