The short videos I watched from all dynasties
Chapter 104 Changes in the Official Selection System
Just then, I saw a video about the changes in the official selection system. Li Ranran thought that since he had just watched an exciting video, he might as well review the knowledge he had learned before.
【Changes in the system of selecting officials in ancient my country】
1. The system of hereditary nobility and hereditary salary
During the Western Zhou Dynasty, the feudal system was implemented. The emperor, princes, and ministers were all based on solidified class lineages, and the position of official was also inherited from generation to generation.
2. The system of recommendation
The Qin Dynasty began to implement the county system, and officials from all regions were directly appointed by the central government, which effectively avoided the situation of warlord separatism.
Although a system of feudal system and county system coexisting was implemented in the early days of the Han Dynasty, the feudal system was abolished in the later period.
The method of selecting officials was the system of recommendation, whereby local officials recommended people of good character and talent to the central government, which then conducted assessments.
The obvious flaw in the recommendation system is that local officials and wealthy families who have the power of recommendation would be more inclined to recommend their own children and students, while other qualities such as character and talent would not be very important.
3. The Nine-Rank System
During the Wei and Jin Dynasties, Chen Qun improved the system of recommendation and established the Nine-Rank System.
The central government selected officials to go to local areas to investigate and find people with moral character and talent, and divided these people into nine grades based on their family background and origin.
Up, up, up, down
Upper middle, middle middle, lower middle
Down-up, down-middle, down-down
The central government assesses this group of people to select officials.
Elections were controlled by local governments, which led to corruption and other problems, and ordinary people found it difficult to get promotion opportunities. This also led to the situation where "there are no poor people in the upper class and no nobles in the lower class".
4. Imperial Examination System
Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty, Yang Jian, abolished the Nine-Rank System that had existed since the Wei and Jin Dynasties, and the imperial examination system came into being.
A method of selecting talents through examinations was established, and candidates could apply for the exam regardless of their social status.
In the imperial examination system during the Tang Dynasty, the names of the candidates were not covered. The examiners implemented a system of distributing the examination papers to the entire list, selectively giving extra points to candidates based on their reputation in society.
The imperial examination system of the Song Dynasty, first of all, had a much larger enrollment scale than that of the Tang Dynasty, and the system was more complete, and it also implemented systems such as sealing, locking the academy, and transcription, which largely avoided the occurrence of corruption.
In order to unify the intellectuals, the imperial examinations in Ming and Qing dynasties strictly limited the content of the examinations to the Four Books and Five Classics. It was also from the Ming Dynasty that the imperial examination system gradually became rigid from its peak, and also changed from a national system to a backward system that constrained thought.
The imperial examination system lasted for 1,300 years in my country until the late Qing government abolished it and built new-style schools.
But the imperial examination system still has a profound impact on our current examinations, and has even spread overseas. 】
<SOS, memories of junior high school history come back again…>
< Yuan Shao: Three Dukes for Four Generations! >
<Cao Cao was also selected as an official by a filial and honest person>
<To be honest, Boss Cao is quite filial, he slaughtered people in Xuzhou for his father [dog head]>
<I also have to talk about some of the stories in the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars that destroy one’s worldview [laughing and crying] >
< The selected scholar is ignorant of books; the selected filial and honest person has a father who lives separately [thumbs-up]>
< The Nine-Rank System is the most outrageous…>
<Any system will have flaws after being used for a long time, and those who want to take advantage of it will always find shortcuts>
<Oh, it seems that class still needs to flow>
<In the beginning, the imperial examination system had nothing to do with common people, and was mostly controlled by aristocratic families. The main purpose of the imperial examination was to use common people to dilute the power held by aristocratic families and consolidate the imperial power.>
<Indeed, the imperial examinations we are familiar with are probably those after the Song Dynasty. The imperial examinations during the Sui and Tang Dynasties were not ambiguous at all, and had little impact on the aristocratic families.>
<How dare you laugh at Huang Chao for being a coward? There were many absurd things about the imperial examinations in the Tang Dynasty. Remember that because his father's name was Li Jinsu, his son could not take the imperial examination>
<If I remember correctly, it was the “poet ghost” Li He. Alas, he was quite unlucky. Even Han Yu’s words of help were not enough. He died early... What a pity for his talent...>
<The imperial examination system is said to be for creating upward channels for common people, but the real reason is that they are afraid that if they are oppressed too harshly, they will rebel. Now they are given some hope, so that they feel that if they study hard, they will have the opportunity to move up and change their class>
<In the past, there were not many people who could read, and most of them were illiterate farmers>
……
Qin Chao now understood the way to select talents in the future, but the disadvantages also came from it. However, Guangmu was right. No system was perfect. We still had to find the one that was suitable for the current stage.
At this time, Qin unified the six kingdoms for a year, and Chunyu Yue had just entered Qin. Although Qin Shihuang still assigned Chunyu Yue to Fusu as a teacher, at the same time, because of the spoilers of the light curtain, Qin Shihuang became more wary of Confucianism.
At this time, Fusu had not yet made clear his political views. Seeing the text displayed on the light curtain, he quietly wondered in his heart why the feudal system and counties coexisted in the early Han Dynasty, but the feudal system was later abolished?
Is the county system better than the feudal system?
嗏
Ying Zheng noticed that his eldest son was acting strangely, but did not speak to remind him.
----
Eastern Han Dynasty, the third year of Jianning
When the Yuan brothers saw the words "four generations of three officials" on the screen, they were stunned for a moment and then quickly lowered their heads.
Originally, "four generations of three officials" doesn't mean that the family is very powerful, there is nothing wrong with it, but when this word is mentioned in this video, it makes people feel that something bad is going to happen!!!
Compared to Yuan Shao's fear, Yuan Shu was more unconvinced. Why did Guangmu always mention Cao Cao and Yuan Shao? Obviously, his background was better than both of them, so why didn't Guangmu mention himself more...
Cao Cao realized the irony of the video, but when he saw the "filial deeds" he would do in the future, he was horrified.
He knelt down and apologized to Emperor Liu Hong of Han: "I shouldn't have done such a thing that hurts the heaven and earth out of anger. I am guilty."
Liu Hong looked at the young man in front of him. He was only two years older than him, but he was quite smart in handling things.
Of course, he cannot be blamed. Should he be punished just because of a few ambiguous words on the light curtain?
"Now that you know what will happen in the future, you must learn from it and don't do this again when you become an official."
Xuzhou people are sarcastic: You are noble [like], you are filial [like], you slaughter us for your old father, you are awesome [like]
----
Tang Dynasty, the 12th year of Yuanhe
Li He was lying there sickly, drinking medicine, not even looking at the light screen, and his whole body exuded a gloomy aura.
Li's mother was able to hold back her tears when she heard Guangmu say that her son was very unlucky, but when she heard that Li He died early, she could no longer control herself.
My son, why is your life so miserable...
Because of Guangmu, Han Yu's official career was much smoother than in history. When he saw Guangmu mention the previous incident, Han Yu felt a little regretful.
"I don't know how he is now."
If we can help, we will help, even if it can change his fate of early death, so we sent people to look for Li He.
……
(In history, Li He died of illness in the 11th year of Yuanhe. Here, it is assumed that he was still alive in the 12th year of Yuanhe.)
