The Maritime Self-Defense Force has an active strength of about 5 troops, more than 150 warships and about 350 aircraft of various types, with a total tonnage of more than 50 tons. It is equipped with a large number of Aegis destroyers and light aircraft carriers capable of carrying stealth carrier-based aircraft, plus a large number of auxiliary ships, landing ships and training ships and other auxiliary ships. Its total combat effectiveness is second only to the United States, the Bear Country, the Dragon Country and the British Empire among the Five Permanent Members.

There are two large amphibious combat ships, the Izumo class, with a full load displacement of tons and a maximum speed of 2 knots, reaching the level of an aircraft carrier. They can carry 30 combat personnel and 500 ship-borne helicopters of various types including SH-60K helicopters and MCH-101 helicopters, equipped with a four-sided array OPS-28 radar and a navigation system and an assisted landing system. Now the two largest ships of the Maritime Self-Defense Force have begun to improve. They once tracked the Liaoning ship continuously, but later had to return to let other ships take over because of insufficient self-sustaining power. In the future, they will carry 50 F-12B fighter jets to perform the tasks of small aircraft carriers.

The two Hyuga-class helicopter carriers have a full load displacement of tons and are powered by all-fuel. They can carry 2 helicopters including the SH-60K anti-submarine helicopter and the MCH-101 minesweeper/transport helicopter. They are not designed with a dock and mainly emphasize anti-submarine capabilities.

The three Osumi-class transport ships are only equipped with two helicopter landing platforms at the rear of the ship and no helicopter hangar. They are mainly used to transport vehicles, personnel and supplies. They have a full load displacement of tons, a maximum speed of 3 knots, and strong stealth capabilities. The dock can accommodate two LCAC air-cushion landing craft, which can carry 22 troops, 2 Type 330 main battle tanks or 15 tons of cargo.

Aegis destroyers, two Maya-class missile destroyers, are the strongest Aegis destroyers of the Maritime Self-Defense Force, with a full load displacement of tons, equipped with a new Aegis SPY-ID(V) phased array radar, 2 units of MK96, loaded with Standard-41 medium-range air defense missiles, Standard-2 long-range air defense missiles, and a relatively tall, wide and thick superstructure with a stealth design. The anti-ship firepower is still the old Harpoon/3 anti-ship missiles of the Maritime Self-Defense Force, but the Dutch slope of the helicopter landing and take-off platform has been cancelled.

The two Atago-class guided missile destroyers are upgraded and improved versions of the Kongo-class with elongated hulls and helicopter hangars installed. This type of ship is also designed based on the Arleigh Burke IIA type. The hull is wide and obviously outward-flared, with strong navigation stability and suitable for ocean voyages. The radar has not been improved much, and because there is no vertical launch mechanical crane installed, there are a total of 2 vertical launch units, mainly equipped with Standard-96MR air defense missiles, and the armament is not much different.

The four Kongo-class missile destroyers are the first type of Aegis destroyers built by Japan. They have a full load displacement of 4 tons and are equipped with a total of 9485 MK90 vertical launch systems. They are equipped with Standard-41 medium-range air defense missiles and Asroc anti-submarine missiles. In addition, this type of ship also carried out anti-missile interception tests with Standard-2. The four-sided SPY-3D phased array radar has a detection range of 1 kilometers for non-stealth targets and 400 kilometers for stealth targets.

Small and medium destroyers

Two Asahi-class general-purpose destroyers, with a full load displacement of 2 tons, have stronger stealth, use a new type of power module, mainly emphasize anti-submarine power, have a full load displacement of 6850 tons, are relatively quiet in navigation, have phased array air search radars, and are equipped with 6850-unit MK32 vertical launch devices. They are mainly equipped with anti-submarine missiles and Sea Sparrow air defense missiles. Their anti-ship firepower is relatively poor and mainly relies on two 41-mounted Type 2 anti-ship missiles.

The four Akizuki-class general-purpose destroyers are designed to be universal and are mainly used to replace old ships. They have a full load displacement of 4 tons and a total of 6800 units of MK32 vertical launch systems. Their armament is not much different from that of the Asahi-class. They are equipped with a phased array radar instead of a rotating radar like the Gaobo-class.

The five Takanami-class general-purpose destroyers have a full load displacement of 5 tons. They are an enlarged version of the Murasame-class and are also equipped with 6300 MK32 vertical launch units. Their equipment is the same as that of the Akizuki-class. The ships are relatively tall and are mainly equipped with various types of navigation and early warning radars. They are equipped with a rotating array three-dimensional air search radar. The main missiles are the four-missile Sea Sparrow and anti-submarine missiles in one pit. All subsequent ships will have this configuration.

The nine Murasame-class destroyers have a full load displacement of 9 tons and are relatively small in size. They use a 5100-unit MK32 vertical launch system to load 48 advanced Sea Sparrow air defense missiles or 32 Asroc anti-submarine missiles. This type of ship is the only one that uses the MK16 vertical launch system, and it is also the first type of ship with a certain stealth capability.

8 Asagiri-class destroyers. The ships are relatively old. The firepower on board is mainly for anti-submarine preparation. The air defense capability is relatively poor. They are equipped with 1 8-unit RIM-7M Mk29 "Sea Sparrow" air defense missile launcher and 1 8-unit Mk112 "Asroc" anti-submarine missile launcher.

Frigate

The six Abukuma-class frigates have a full load displacement of 6 tons and a low degree of automation. They are equipped with a Type 2900 eight-tube ASROC anti-submarine missile launcher modeled after the American MK-112. Their air defense relies on Phalanx close-in defense guns and naval guns. They are being gradually retired and will be replaced by the Mogami-class in the future.

There are three Mogami-class FFM multi-purpose frigates and one under construction. They are currently Japan's most advanced stealth frigates with a high degree of automation. They have a full load displacement of 3 tons and are equipped with a 1-unit MK5500 vertical launch system. They no longer use the traditional Phalanx, but are equipped with a SeaRAM 16-unit close-in defense system.

Underwater Power

One Taigei-class conventional attack submarine was launched. This type of submarine is currently the most powerful submarine of the Maritime Self-Defense Force, with an underwater displacement of up to 1 tons, making it the largest conventional submarine of the Maritime Self-Defense Force. However, its sonar and avionics are not much different from those of the Soryu-class. It also uses the AIP system. Its main weapons are six HU-1 4200mm torpedo launchers that can use weapons of all types of submarines of the Maritime Self-Defense Force. The name of this type of submarine comes from the submarine carrier of the same name in World War II.

The 12 Soryu-class conventional attack submarines are the first AIP-powered submarines of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. They have a submerged displacement of 3300 tons and a maximum underwater speed of 20 knots. The speed when using the AIP system alone is 4 knots. Their weapons include 6 533mm torpedo tubes, which can launch MK-37 or Type 89 533mm anti-submarine homing torpedoes and submarine-launched Soryu anti-ship missiles.

The 9 Oyashio-class conventional attack submarines have an underwater displacement of 4000 tons and an underwater speed of 20 knots. Their main weapons are 6 HU-605 533mm torpedo tubes with a payload of 22 rounds. They are mainly loaded with Type 89 submarine torpedoes, Harpoon anti-ship missiles and mines, and have a maximum diving depth of 500 meters.
