I have a Mount and Blade panel and I kill people in the Game of Thrones

Chapter 23: Solemn, Lyon takes the Night Watch oath

After the guard of the command tower asked Lyon about his purpose, he moved aside to make way for him and opened the door of the commander-in-chief's study for Lyon.

Lyon then walked with his head held high, stepping into the study with his left foot first. After briefly adapting to the light in the room, Lyon noticed that the commander-in-chief had quite a few guests visiting him.

The commander-in-chief was holding a parchment letter in his hand. When he saw Lyon coming in, he ignored it and rolled up the letter and put it in a small wooden barrel. Then he tied it to a raven and released it out of the window.

"This is already the third great lord we have sought help from. I hope he will not let us down and bring us the soldiers and food we desperately need."

Grand Maester Aemon, with his dim eyes, stared out the empty window and muttered to himself.

Seeing that Old Xiong had finished his work, Lyon imitated the tone and posture of other veterans and saluted the commander-in-chief.

"Leon Victor reports for duty, Lord Commander-in-Chief."

"You seem to have endless energy, you've fought twice in two days. Have you chosen your opponent today?"

As soon as Old Xiong came up, he launched into a barrage of deliberate accusations, his expression neither good nor bad. This question made Leon feel a little embarrassed as to how to answer.

"Before Colin left, he asked me for you. He insisted on having you as his deputy in the Rangers."

"But I rejected it because you haven't gone through the oath ceremony yet. I believe you have considered it very clearly in the past two days about whether to take the oath or not."

When Old Xiong spoke, there was a sense of majesty that could not be interrupted, so Leon had to stand straight, holding his head high and listening to what Old Xiong said.

"As a noble, you are different from the prisoners. You can leave at any time before the oath ceremony, and you will not be considered a deserter. After all, over the past thousands of years, countless men who were passionate men before setting out have been scared to death after feeling the biting cold wind of the Wall."

"At the same time, love, power, family, etc. in this world have nothing to do with you anymore. Are you ready, Leon Victor?"

"Always be prepared, Lord Commander-in-Chief."

Lyon listened to Old Xiong's inspiring speech. Although he was just a high school student before the time travel, his blood was already boiling with excitement. He wished he could swear an oath on the spot and become a glorious brother of the Night's Watch.

"Very good, Master, call your men and let's go to the church."

"Yes, Lord Commander-in-Chief."

Alisa Thorn, who had been silent since Leon came in, finally spoke. He glanced at Leon while speaking. Somehow, Leon never looked at him more than once today, as if he was just air.

It seemed that the long-standing hostile relationship between the two had come to an end with Lyon's upcoming joining of the Night's Watch.

"Don't even think about it. I'm not done with you." Alliser Thorne muttered in a low voice. His narrow-mindedness prevented him from letting go of the hatred between them so easily.

But then on the way to the church, Alliser Thorne found that there were flocks of crows floating in the sky, and a few of them even landed on his shoulders and kept cawed on his head. Alliser Thorne was upset and tried to wave them away, but the result was that more crows fell on his head.

As if this was some kind of ominous sign.

"Humph, why bother about these little crows."

The old bear groaned, which paused Elisa's movements. Then the latter had no choice but to let the crow use his body as a foothold.

Fortunately, once we entered the church, these annoying crows disappeared.

Mormont stood before the altar, rainbow lights glittering on his bald head. "You came here against the law," he began. "Poachers, rapists, debtors, murderers, thieves and kidnappers. You came here as children, alone and in chains, without friends or honor. You came here rich or poor. You came from great families or bastards or nobody, but it doesn't matter. All is past. We are all one family on the Wall.

"This evening, as the sun sets and the night falls, you will take the oath. From now on, you are sworn brothers of the Night's Watch. Your sins will be cleared, your debts will be cancelled, and you will also have to erase your former family loyalties, put aside your old hatreds, and forget your past love affairs. You will be reborn.

"The Night's Watch serve the kingdom. Not for the king, not for the nobles, not for the honor of the rich, not for wealth, not for glory, not for love, but for the safety of the kingdom and its people. The Night's Watch do not marry or have children. We take responsibility as our wife and honor as our concubine. You are our only sons.

"You have heard the oath. Please think carefully before you swear. Once you put on the black clothes, there will be no turning back. Abandoning your duty is the only death penalty." Elder Xiong paused for a moment, then continued, "Does anyone among you want to leave? If so, leave now. We will never look down on you for this."

No one moved.

"Very well," said Mormont. "Return here in the evening and take the oath before Septon Celeda and the chief of your order. Are there any of you who believe in the Old Gods?"

Leon thought for a moment and said, “Yes, sir.”

"Could it be that the Victor family believes in the old gods?"

"No, it's just that since I've come to the Wall, I'd better pay a visit to the local gods."

After hearing Leon's answer, Mr. Xiong felt strange but did not delve into it further.

"When this is over, go to the haunted forest half a mile north. There are weirwoods everywhere from the old gods there."

"That's it, kid. According to our needs and your own abilities and skills, you will be assigned to different positions." Bowen Marsh, the general steward of the Night's Watch, stepped forward and handed him a piece of paper. The commander spread out the paper. "Hold, join the craftsman," he began to read, and Hold nodded stiffly and excitedly. "Glen, join the Rangers. Abate, join the craftsman. Piper, join the Rangers." The new recruits whose names were read all showed a relieved expression. "Mesha, join the Rangers. Darien, join the affairs officer. Todd, join the Rangers. Lyon... is the deputy of the chief coach, responsible for training the new recruits."

"The night is coming. I begin my watch until I die. I shall take no wife, no land, no child. I shall wear no crown, no prize. I shall do my duty. Live and die by it. I am a sword in the dark, a sentinel on the wall, a fire that burns against the cold, a light that brings the dawn, a horn to wake the sleepers, a shield that protects the realm. I give my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and every night."

The recruits whose names were called all knelt down and recited the Night's Watch oath. Their voices were different, but the content was exactly the same.

"You are children when you kneel down. Rise up, men of the Night's Watch."

Following Elder Xiong's order, the new recruits all stood up with excitement on their faces. They looked at their companions in bewilderment, unable to believe that they were now truly night watchmen.

"You will be called the Night Watchmen, but you are fools if you believe them. You are all little brats smelling of summer, and when winter comes, you will all die like flies."

Alliser Thorne's vicious words really poured cold water on the recruits.

Especially when he heard Old Xiong say that Leon would serve as his deputy to train new recruits in the future, he immediately became furious and turned to face Old Xiong.
