Chapter 141: The Death of Stannis
At the Battle of Winterfell, the massive armies of both sides engaged each other for only half an hour.
In the next few hours, the Bolton family's cavalry had only one task left, which was to massacre the fleeing soldiers.
At the edge of the Wolfwood, the Bolton family's cavalry frequently shuttled through the woods. They galloped on their horses and ruthlessly killed every soldier belonging to Stannis they encountered.
The Boltons had a custom that once they captured enough prisoners in a war for Ramsay Bolton the Younger to make human skin shields, they would no longer show mercy, but instead kill even more ruthlessly.
A Dragonstone cavalryman, with only the upper body left, crawled silently and with difficulty on the ground.
He stretched out his hand hard, trying to reach the shining sword in the distance.
At this moment, the pain in his body has been covered up by the paralysis of his nerves, and the only thing in his heart is the desire and obsession to survive.
But blood continued to flow out from the wound on his waist, and he finally fell powerlessly about three or five yards away from the sword.
Not far in front of him, Stannis was half-kneeling on the ground with blood all over his face, supporting his sword with difficulty with his armpits, and then standing up required all his strength.
The woods were silent, with only the sound of Stannis's painful breathing. He walked forward aimlessly, trying to escape from this cruel battlefield.
What he didn't notice was that behind him, two soldiers from House Bolton were like the god of death, holding long swords and following him closely.
"No! No! Please..."
'Pfft...'
The Dragonstone cavalry's pleas for mercy came to an abrupt end with the sound of swords entering their bodies.
Hearing the noise, Stannis turned around and saw the two Bolton cavalrymen were already close at hand.
The two sides entered into battle without hesitation or nonsense! Stannis, exhausted and physically exhausted, gritted his teeth and used up his last bit of strength to fight a life-and-death battle with the enemy!
In the fierce battle, Stannis was unfortunately seriously injured, his left leg was hit by the opponent's fierce attack, and he was seriously injured, but he did not retreat or give up. Instead, he endured the severe pain with amazing perseverance and continued to fight.
In the end, after a hard and arduous fight, Stannis relied on his tenacious will and excellent fighting skills to successfully kill the two Bolton soldiers before falling.
When he struggled to get up from the ground, he immediately let out a painful roar like a beast.
Then, he leaned against a tree exhausted and gasped for breath. The fierce battle just now had completely exhausted his remaining physical strength.
Feelings of resentment and anger surged in his heart like waves.
However, at this moment, Stannis lowered his head and glanced at his severely injured left leg, only to see blood oozing from the wound like a trickle.
As his strength gradually drained away, Stannis finally and helplessly and calmly accepted the reality that he could not easily escape from the battlefield.
Just then, Stannis heard the sound of boots stepping on the snow, and as the footsteps approached, he raised his head with difficulty.
He saw a tall woman in armor walking towards him, so he said sarcastically in a calm tone:
"Bolton also found a woman to fight for him?"
"I do not serve the Boltons. I am Brienne of Tarth."
Stannis thought for a moment, but his mind was so confused from the loss of blood that he could not recall any information about the woman.
Perhaps because of Stannis's indifference to Brienne, he chose to close his eyes. However, the tenacity in his heart drove him to work hard to recover his strength, eager to grasp a glimmer of hope.
After all, he had persisted even in such a difficult moment as defending Storm's End in despair. What's more, with the help of the Red Witch Melisandre, he saw with his own eyes in the fire that the Son of Prophecy himself ascended the Iron Throne...The little predicament before him was really insignificant to him, the true king chosen by the Red God.
Seeing Stannis remained silent, Brienne was not angry. She continued to introduce herself:
"I was Renly Baratheon's Rainbow Guard."
After hearing these words, Stannis suddenly opened his eyes and then looked at Brienne with a complicated expression.
Brienne continued:
"I was there when he was stabbed to death by a shadow with your face. Did you murder him with blood magic?"
Stannis was silent for a moment after hearing this question. His honor as a brother and king prevented him from telling a lie, so he admitted it cleanly:
"I did it."
After hearing Stannis's admission, Brienne drew out her half-inch sword without hesitation, then walked up to Stannis and said:
"In the name of King Renly Baratheon I, Defender of the First Men and the Andals, and only rightful King of the Seven Kingdoms, I, Brienne of Tarth, sentence you to death."
Stannis listened quietly, without showing any fear on his face, but instead showing a trace of guilt and reflection. He knew that some mistakes, once made, could not be undone, and it was too late to repent at this moment.
"Do you have any last words?"
Brienne asked.
"…No, just do your duty."
As soon as Stannis finished speaking, Brienne drew her two-handed sword from its scabbard without hesitation.
With a loud shout, she swung her sword decisively and powerfully, beheading the true king chosen by the Red God - Stannis.
……
Seeing that Winterfell was still firmly controlled by the Bolton family, Sansa Stark was filled with despair.
She had a choice, and she chose to set foot on this old land because Littlefinger Baelish had promised her that her father Ned Stark had always been a staunch supporter of Stannis during his lifetime.
If Stannis can successfully rally the northern lords to capture Winterfell, he will appoint her as the new Warden of the North.
Even if Stannis did not get what he wanted, Sansa naively thought that marrying Ramsay Bolton and becoming the wife of the Guardian of the North would at least ensure her own safety.
However, she never expected that Ramsay Bolton was such a cruel and perverted person, and she regretted it deeply at this moment.
After witnessing the defeat of Stannis's army, Sansa couldn't wait to escape from Winterfell. She would rather face death than continue to endure the humiliation and torture of Ramsay Bolton.
She had just taken two steps when she ran into Ramsay Bolton's mistress Myranda, and following closely behind her, Theon Greyjoy, whom Jon Snow vowed to get rid of - or, should we call him "Reek" now.
This heartless woman, with a personality as cruel as Ramsay, often takes pleasure in abusing Sansa.
