Come to another world and become a lord

Chapter 179 Artillery Attack

The sun was rising, and the morning light was shining on the city wall. This was a military town on the border of Bertie's territory. Veteran Joey walked out of the barracks as usual, through the door of the watchtower and walked towards the city wall. He was wearing a brown leather vest and a half helmet made of iron sheets. His steps were steady and powerful. He had been engaged in town protection for nearly 20 years, and the years had left obvious marks on his face.

"Good morning, Uncle Joey!" A young sentry waved to him in greeting.

He smiled and nodded in response:

"Good morning, young man."

And continued on his way, greeting many familiar faces along the way.

"Hello, old friend." An old soldier about the same age as him waved at him.

"Hello, Robert." He was a fellow villager of his. The two of them left the village and came to the town together. So many years had passed in the blink of an eye. When they passed each other, they exchanged a smile.

Even under the city wall, there were still a few naughty children waiting there early. When they saw him, they immediately shouted:

"Uncle Joey, tell us some adventure stories!" a child pleaded.

"Not today, little ones. I have things to do," Adrian said kindly. "But you can come to my place in the evening and I will tell you the story of when I was a young man and went into a beast's den alone."

Then he saw the children, nodded, smiled and ran away.

He smiled and shook his head, then began to work on the city wall. Although it was called work, it was actually just standing there and observing the surroundings. At most, he would check whether there were any problems with the city wall, the arrow tower, and the chevaux de frise below. Overall, it was quite easy, but the pay was not high either. This was not a full-time job. In addition to patrolling the city wall, Joey also had another job. He was a carpenter and would repair furniture for others when he had nothing to do.

The other defenders on the city wall were in a similar situation as him. They were both guards and townspeople.

As he was thinking, he suddenly heard someone calling him:

"Uncle Joey, look over there, that looks like an army?"

"Troops?" Joey looked curiously. There seemed to be a group of horsemen gathering in the distance. He couldn't see whose troops they were because the distance was too far. He also saw some strange things, some long huge iron bars, embedded in wheels, pulled by horses, and placed in a row. Joey felt strange. He couldn't guess what those things were used for. If they were weapons, how should they be used?

As he was watching curiously, he saw flames suddenly coming out of the tops of the big iron bars.

Then, a loud bang shook the earth, almost making him lose his balance. He instinctively grabbed the stone wall beside him to stabilize his body. Then, a series of terrifying explosions sounded, deafening. The city wall suddenly exploded, countless people were blown away, and for a time, there were broken arms and limbs everywhere. He had never experienced such an attack. This was not an ordinary rain of arrows or the bombardment of catapults. Could it be those iron bars that could cause such power? Impossible, absolutely impossible, they were just iron bars. Joey couldn't figure out how iron bars could produce such an attack. This was beyond his cognition. There was only one reasonable explanation.

"Mage! It's the mage!" he shouted in horror, but what frightened him even more was the continuous explosions, one after another. The shells hit the city walls, raising huge clouds of dust. The places that were hit collapsed rapidly, accompanied by the screams and wails of countless people.

Joey was shocked. He was sure that only a mage's magic could cause such a level of damage, but the frequency of the attacks, was it really a mage? Could a mage do this? He felt horrified at the thought.

The city was in chaos, with cries of terror coming one after another. Soldiers rushed to the city walls in a hurry, trying to organize a defense, but when the shells hit, they were all stunned. They had never seen such a terrible attack. Those seemingly indestructible walls turned into rubble in an instant.

Karl's artillery was neatly arranged outside the city wall, and it was the Altai Rangers who were using them. In the eyes of the soldiers, these new weapons were just variants of the catapults, but more flexible and convenient. They were already familiar with the use of the catapults, so they were very familiar with it. They adjusted the angle precisely, loaded gunpowder and shells, and Karl shouted, "Fire!"

The muzzle roared again, and the second round of shells whizzed out, smashing into the city wall with destructive force. Then another section of the wall collapsed quickly. The former city wall was now riddled with holes.

After several rounds of bombardment, the cavalry were ready to go. With the order to charge, they rushed towards the town. Altai led the rangers, like a black torrent, and rushed straight to the breaches in the city wall.

Looking at the cavalry approaching the town, the defenders tried to climb up the broken walls for a final resistance. They aimed their bows and arrows at the invading cavalry, but another round of artillery fire followed. This was the last round of artillery fire to cover the cavalry charge. The target was the remaining archers on the city wall. The soldiers had no time to react and were hit by the shock wave and flying debris from the explosion and fell down one after another.

The cavalry swarmed in from the broken gates and the gaps in the city walls. Looking at the few remaining soldiers who were still prepared to hold on, they did not choose to charge directly, but suddenly threw out unknown objects. Those objects fell into the army formation, causing another violent explosion, countless people were blown away, and the army formation collapsed instantly. At this moment, everyone collapsed.

As the cavalry advanced, the resistance in the city gradually weakened. The defenders either laid down their weapons and surrendered, or were scattered in the chaos. Joey stood in the ruins, watching all this happen, his heart was dead. He had never seen such a battle, and he didn't even know what kind of magic the other side used. Fear and despair enveloped his heart, and he couldn't even hold the weapon in his hand.

The battle lasted less than an hour from the beginning to the end. Karl's cavalry quickly broke through the defense line and occupied the entire town. Only one person was injured, while the defenders were in a terrible state, with wailing and screaming everywhere. The air was filled with the smell of blood, and the glory of the past was gone at this moment.

Joey knew that the battle was over. When the cavalry surrounded him, he slowly put down his weapon and raised his hands. Then he saw that man, the enemy commander, a man named Carl, riding a horse majestically past him. An invisible pressure made him kneel down. He knew very well that it was the natural fear of the strong.

He saw the other party looking at him with a cold gaze, and then said to the subordinates around him:

"Pass the order down, treat the townspeople well, and don't kill those who surrender!"

With the respectful replies of the cavalrymen, Joey understood that he was safe, and so were the city and its residents. Next, they had to learn to survive in this new system.
