Chapter 75: Four Capitals in the East, West, and North

At this time, the Jin army sent out Wanyan Zonghan and Wanyan Zongmou, two of the most powerful generals of the Jurchen tribe, to prepare their troops and deploy their troops. Each of them led an army of 6 men and sent troops from Hedong and Hebei respectively, attacking cities along the way, preparing to capture Bianjing in one fell swoop and destroy the Song Dynasty.

The scale of the battle deployed by the Jin Kingdom was much larger than in the past, and it frightened all the officials of the Zhao Song court.

Since the founding of the Song Dynasty by Emperor Taizu Zhao Kuangyin, the dynasty has always attached importance to civil officials and restrained military generals. As a result, there were many civil officials but very few military generals who could lead troops to fight. Moreover, the Zhao Song court had a very poor awareness of war preparedness, and the deployment of border troops was also extremely weak.

In addition, the Song Dynasty had been peaceful for nearly two hundred years, and no large-scale wars had occurred. Except for the Western Army which often fought against the Western Xia and the Liao Kingdom, other armies generally had low combat effectiveness. The Jurchens of the Jin Kingdom, as a rising star, forcefully destroyed the entire Liao Kingdom. With a king like Song Huizong who had lost his country presiding over the overall situation, how could the Northern Song Dynasty not be defeated!

The building is about to collapse, how sad it is!

At this time, Niu Gao, leading an army of seven or eight thousand men, but with only a few hundred guns and a small number of mortars, also arrived at Panlong Town. Xu Xian had originally planned to concentrate on training for another month before heading north to fight against the Jin. He would first capture the Northern Song capital of Beijing, which had been occupied by the Jin people, and then take over the four capitals to establish a more extensive foundation for fighting against the Jin!

Many people may not know much about the four capitals of the Northern Song Dynasty in the southeast, northwest, northwest and northeast. Apart from the capital city of Bianliang, where are the other three capitals? Why did the Northern Song Dynasty establish four capitals of Xijing, Nanjing and Beijing?

Since 960 AD, Zhao Kuangyin, a general of the Later Zhou Dynasty, launched the Chenqiao Mutiny, seized the throne and established the Northern Song Dynasty. Song Taizu Zhao Kuangyin inherited the Later Zhou Dynasty and still made Kaifeng, also known as Tokyo Bianliang, the capital.

The capital of Xijing was in Henan Prefecture, which is now Luoyang City in Henan Province. Luoyang occupies an important position in Chinese history and is known as the ancient capital of 13 dynasties. Due to historical reasons, during the reigns of the Later Jin, Later Han, and Later Zhou dynasties, Kaifeng became the capital again, while Luoyang has always been the Xijing.

In other words, due to historical reasons, the Northern Song Dynasty continued to use Luoyang as the Western Capital. Although Luoyang was once in ruins during the wars in the late Tang Dynasty, it was still one of the most important cities in the Northern Song Dynasty after being managed during the Five Dynasties.

Moreover, since Kaifeng is flat except for the Yellow River and has no strategic location to defend, Song Taizu Zhao Kuangyin originally wanted to move the capital to Luoyang. However, due to opposition from Zhao Guangyi and others, he had to abandon the plan of moving the capital to Luoyang, the Western Capital.

Nanjing in the Northern Song Dynasty was in Yingtian Prefecture, not the Nanjing City of Yingtian Prefecture in the Ming Dynasty, but in the current Shangqiu City of Henan Province. It became the capital for political reasons.

Why did Shangqiu become the Nanjing of the Northern Song Dynasty? This is mainly because before Emperor Taizu Zhao Kuangyin of the Song Dynasty became the founding emperor of the Song Dynasty, he was appointed as the Jiedushi of Guide Army by Emperor Gong of the Later Zhou Dynasty, and was in charge of Songzhou, which is the area of Shangqiu. Zhao Kuangyin launched a mutiny, and because Songzhou was his hiding place, the country was named Song, and the status of Songzhou was naturally raised, and it was changed to Yingtian Prefecture and called Nanjing.

The Beijing of the Northern Song Dynasty was not the Beijing of today, but Daming County in today's Hebei Province. However, it was upgraded to the capital because of military confrontation.

The place name "Beijing Damingfu" often appears in the novel "Water Margin". After the establishment of the Northern Song Dynasty, other separatist regimes were quickly eliminated, but the military pressure in the north was very great, especially the two northern expeditions of Song Taizong, both ended in failure.

Due to its military strategy, Damingfu became a key military town for the Northern Song Dynasty to resist the Liao Dynasty, so the Northern Song Dynasty built a defense line with Damingfu as the core. Under such circumstances, the status of Damingfu was naturally improved. In order to resist the Liao Dynasty, Damingfu was upgraded to Beijing during the reign of Emperor Renzong of Song Dynasty.
