Chapter 295: The Dispute between Taoism and Buddhism

Buddhism and Taoism each have their own unique features and devout believers, so they insist on their own views and firmly believe that they represent justice. This opposition often leads to both sides acting on impulse, forming their own factions and excluding and slandering each other.

For example, Buddhists wrote "Laughing at Taoism", while Taoists wrote "Laughing at Buddha" in response. They exposed each other's shortcomings, promoted their own good deeds, and did their best to engage in a fierce war of words.

As the saying goes, "Taoism is the root, Confucianism is the stem, and Buddhism is the leaf and flower." In the later period of the ancient Chinese civilization, the three major philosophical schools of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism were like three pillars supporting the spiritual world of the entire Chinese nation. The three schools were independent of each other but blended with each other, jointly constructing a complete and unique mainstream ideological system.

However, at this time, the whole world was in a very special and critical period - the stage of large-scale invasion of Chinese traditional culture by Western gods and Buddhas. This was undoubtedly a huge challenge and test for the founder of Taoism, the god revered as Taishang Laojun. He was full of reluctance and indomitable spirit, because he was unwilling to see Taoism lose its dominant position in Chinese culture.

Faced with this situation, Taishang Laojun stood up without hesitation and issued an impassioned call. He called on all Taoist disciples and believers in the world to unite and firmly resist the spread of Buddhist thoughts brought by the so-called "gods and demons" in the West. He knew the difficulty of this struggle, but he firmly believed that as long as everyone worked together, they would be able to protect the dignity and status of Taoism.

Unfortunately, although Taishang Laojun’s call was responded to by some people, the situation had already developed to a point where it was irreversible.

The power of Western gods and demons has gradually grown, forming a powerful force. Their influence is becoming more and more extensive, making Taoism's resistance more and more difficult.

Despite this, Taishang Laojun did not give up. He continued to work tirelessly, hoping to find a way to turn the situation around and restore Taoism's glory.

Specifically speaking, "Ru" refers to the Confucianism founded by Confucius; "Shi" refers to the Buddhist teachings represented by Sakyamuni; as for "Tao", it is our native Taoist theory!

Because of the differences in sects, doctrines, and other complex factors, Taoism and Buddhism have experienced many fierce conflicts and struggles throughout history! The outcomes of some of these conflicts can even be described as horrific!

In ancient times, before Laozi ascended to heaven, he had a unique insight into the mysteries of heaven and earth, and founded Taoism on this basis.

Taoism has a long history, dating back to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty. It was founded by the great wise man Laozi Li Er based on the profound thoughts and theories in the two classic works "Tao Te Ching" and "Nanhua Jing". It has evolved and developed over a long period of time. Like Confucianism, Taoism is also a religion that originated from the local area.

As early as before the Zhou Dynasty, there was almost no clear boundary between Confucianism and Taoism. As the saying goes, "the great way is invisible", in the Taoist concept, Confucianism is just a manifestation of the way. There was a rumor that Confucius once asked Laozi about the way, and it has been verified that it is true.

Because of this, Taoism had no particular hostility toward Confucianism. However, this harmonious situation did not change until the Qin Dynasty, when Confucianism and Taoism gradually parted ways.

In the beginning of that period, Buddhism from South India was gradually introduced into the Central Plains. However, due to inconvenient transportation and dangerous roads, as well as the language barrier of foreign religions, the influence of Buddhism in the country was very small, and it was completely inferior to the native Taoism that was born and raised here.
