The useless second daughter of the Hua family

Chapter 2: It doesn’t matter who you marry.

At night, Hua Miaomiao sent Xiaoyu away and lay on the bed thinking about what happened during the day.

There was a knock on the door. She fumbled to get up and opened the door. The sweet fragrance of osmanthus cake hit her face. She couldn't help but raise the corners of her mouth and called out obediently, "Auntie."

Wu had long been the mistress of the house, but Hua Miaomiao still didn't change her name, which was probably her last stubbornness. Fortunately, Wu didn't care and always treated her daughter as her own. She carefully helped Hua Miaomiao to sit down at the table, took out a handkerchief to wipe her hands, then put a piece of osmanthus cake in her hand and poured her a cup of tea.

Hua Miaomiao enjoyed this warm atmosphere very much, but when she thought of the scene during the day, tears could not help but well up in her eyes and she could not eat the cake in her hand at all.

Wu probably guessed what she was thinking. She reached out and took Miaomiao into her arms, whispering in her ear, "My dear Miaomiao, I know you feel wronged. But you really blamed the wrong person for this matter. It was me and Niao Niao who suggested that you get married."

Hua Miaomiao was a little bit unbelievable. Was it her aunt? How could it be? "Why?" she asked in a hoarse voice.

Mrs. Wu patted her back to comfort her and continued, "Miaomiao, ever since your elder sister became the daughter of the Hua family, she was sent to the mountains by your father to learn skills. We are the only two left in this cold family. I raised you by myself. Although you are not my biological child, I have long regarded you as my own child. You can feel all this, right?"

Well, Hua Miaomiao buried herself in Wu's arms and nodded silently. In fact, she was the same. Although she didn't say it, she had already regarded her aunt as the closest person in her heart. Because of this, she didn't understand her aunt's behavior.

Wu helped Hua Miaomiao up, her tone more serious than ever before: "Miaomiao is sixteen this year, which is the best age. While the Hua family is still famous, Auntie wants to find a good man for Miaomiao, who will take good care of Miaomiao even if Auntie is gone in the future."

Hua Miaomiao felt heartbroken after hearing this. She couldn't imagine that day coming and she still felt aversion to getting married.

Wu seemed to understand her inner thoughts and continued, "The Hua family is not very friendly, and your elder sister can't always take care of you. Auntie is worried that something unexpected will happen one day. What are you going to do, Miaomiao?"

Auntie's words made Miaomiao feel uneasy. What happened to the Hua family? She hurriedly asked, "Auntie, did anything happen to the Hua family?"

Wu was slightly stunned, then pinched her little face and said, "Don't let your imagination run wild. Auntie just wants to see Miaomiao get married at the best age. Don't worry, with the strength of our Hua family, Auntie will definitely find you a mature, stable, and talented husband."

Mrs. Wu put Hua Miaomiao in bed and chatted with her for a long time before tucking her in and leaving.

Hua Miaomiao lay on the bed, thinking about what her aunt had just said. Although her aunt said a lot of light-hearted things to amuse her, she still had a bad feeling in her heart. Was there really something wrong with the Hua family? What could she do then? She began to consider whether she should follow the arrangements of her family, which would at least make her aunt feel at ease and help the Hua family find help. As for herself, she was just moving from one small courtyard to another.

A series of smacking sounds interrupted her train of thought. The man was very arrogant. Not only did he steal her osmanthus cake, he also leisurely poured tea and drank water, and finally smacked his lips as if he was disgusted.

"Ge Ergou, you ran into the room of an unmarried girl like me in the middle of the night. Aren't you afraid that I will yell and beat you out as a flower thief?" Hua Miaomiao sat on the bed, not looking annoyed, but there was a hint of mockery in her tone, as if she was used to it.

Ge Qinglan didn't take her words seriously at all. He ate several more pieces of cakes and washed them down with tea before saying, "This tea is really not good. I'll bring you something better next time."

Hua Miaomiao didn't want to pay any attention to him. The Ge family was the richest family in Wanzhou, and their food, clothing and other expenses were incomparable to other families. But, brother, did you come here in the middle of the night just because you complained that my tea was not to your taste?

Seeing that Hua Miaomiao ignored him, Ge Qinglan shamelessly moved over and sat on the footstool.

"Miao Miao, I heard that you are getting married? Your aunt is looking for a partner for you."

"Yeah. You're well-informed."

"This is a big deal. Right now, matchmakers in Wanzhou are running around collecting information on men of marriageable age." Her tone was sour and she felt a little blocked in her heart.

"Then...is there one for you?" Hua Miaomiao asked tentatively. It's not that she thinks she has much charm, but with Young Master Ge's arrogance, if this matter is left out, he would probably feel upset for a while.

"No!" As expected, Ge Qinglan exploded. He pounded the bed and complained, "How come I, the second young master of the Ge family, am not worthy of you?"

Hua Miaomiao was very glad that she lived in a remote place, otherwise, with Ge Ergou's behavior, he would have been known as a flower thief. She lowered her head and said in a sad tone, "Is there a possibility that they think I am not worthy of you and dare not marry me?"

Ge Qinglan couldn't tell the truth from the false. He was worried that Hua Miaomiao was really sad. They had known each other since childhood, and he had always protected her. As long as she cried, he would feel so distressed that he wanted to do whatever she wanted. At this moment, he was so anxious that he lost all his previous arrogance. He wanted to reach out to comfort her but was afraid of being abrupt. "I was wrong, Miaomiao, don't cry."

Sensing his panic, Hua Miaomiao decided not to tease him anymore. She put away her playful heart and asked him seriously: "What on earth are you doing here tonight? Do you know how serious the consequences will be if someone sees you appear in my room in the middle of the night?"

Ge Qinglan also stopped joking. He gently took Miaomiao's hand and said very seriously: "Hua Miaomiao, I came here today to ask you, do you want to marry me?"

Hua Miaomiao was so frightened that she shivered and tried to pull her hand back, but it was held tightly. She panicked and shouted, "Ge Ergou, are you crazy? Let go!"

Ge Qinglan ignored her struggle and continued, "It doesn't matter who you marry. Am I not a better choice than those people you don't know? I promise that I will never bully you after we get married, and you can continue to live freely. If one day you meet someone you like and he treats you well, I will prepare a generous dowry for you and send you off in style." He finished speaking his thoughts in one breath and looked at Hua Miaomiao uneasily.

Hua Miaomiao was a little stunned. This was indeed a new way out. However...

"why?"

"Because I'm afraid that others will bully you."

Well, it’s sincere, but not honest enough.

"I'm asking, what do you want?"

"Nothing at all!"

His tone suddenly became heated; maybe he was starting to feel guilty.

"Ge Qinglan!"

"Alright, alright! I confess everything." Ge Qinglan cursed himself for being useless. Every time he was so angry that his brother wanted to use family rules, he was not afraid at all. Why did he feel that something bad was going to happen when this girl called him by his full name with a cold face? Alas! This is my nemesis!

"Nemesis..." Ge Qinglan sighed secretly, took a peek, and found that Hua Miaomiao's expression was normal, probably because she didn't hear clearly, so he continued with confidence: "Brother said that after I get married, he will let me go to the south to inspect the family business, and I won't have to follow the housekeeper to learn. Then, I can take you to play around, Miaomiao, don't you want to go out for a walk?"

Really tempting, isn't it?

"Ge Qinglan, are you serious?" One last confirmation.

Ge Qinglan didn't say anything, but just put her hand on his chest. Feeling the strong heartbeat under his palm, Hua Miaomiao dispelled the last bit of worry.

"Okay. I'll marry you. Ge Qinglan, I'll wait for you to propose tomorrow."

"Okay, you wait for me."
