Girls Frontline: Griffin Security

Chapter 27 Reverse Slope

"I'm here too..."

The M1918BAR and M1919A4 successively reported to the commander that they were running low on ammunition, and the firepower on the top of the mountain was suddenly weakened.

Hearing the increasingly sporadic gunfire, Xu Bin knew that he had no choice but to go. As the sniping firepower weakened, it would become inevitable for the enemy to rush to the direct slope of the high ground.

At this moment, the humanoids have used up more than half of their ammunition. If I don't go up to strengthen the command, I'm afraid this high ground will really be lost...

Xu Bin stood up and stretched his body. After feeling that he had enough strength to support the battle, he walked towards the humanoids.

How to solve this deadlock?

While walking on the hillside with his rifle, Xu Bin looked around:

The high ground in the "heel" area is located on the southernmost side of the North Island, and the enemy is attacking from the north... This means that Xu Bin and his group are now backed by the sea and have nowhere to retreat.

Below him was a flat, soft beach with no cover at all, and if the group wanted to survive they had to let the enemy cross the ridgeline.

This ridgeline extends from the northeast to the southwest of the plateau. Its two ends are steep and dangerous, leaving only the 70-meter-long ridge in the middle for people and vehicles to cross.

The problem now lies in this hilltop that is more than 70 meters long... As the firepower of the humanoids weakens, the enemy has set up guns in more and more positions to suppress the hilltop, which means that the humanoids now have fewer and fewer opportunities to lean out and shoot.

If only there was a way to render that suppressive fire ineffective...

Xu Bin thought so, and then looked at the bumpy hillside below him, and the not-so-long ridgeline on the top of the mountain...

Got it! Reverse slope!

An idea suddenly came to his mind, and Xu Bin quickly picked up the intercom and shouted to the figure above:

"Garland, you take turns to cover each other and retreat to the reverse slope in an orderly manner. Let go of the ridgeline!"

"Eh? Commander, you are serious, right? Isn't this equivalent to suicide?"

Garland was stunned when he heard the order. He asked the commander in a tone of confusion:

"Once we reach the reverse slope, we won't be able to see the enemy anymore. Then they will be able to attack us from a high position."

"Yes, this is exactly what I want. Follow the order and quickly retreat behind the ridge on the reverse slope."

Xu Bin answered all the humanoids in an unquestionable tone, and the latter had no choice but to do as he was told.

..........

Of course he didn't do this to commit suicide, but he had a reason.

At this moment, the enemy's firepower on the north side was becoming more and more intense. It had become an impossible task to defend the ridgeline with such a small number of people.

Sooner or later, the enemy would rush up with bayonets at point blank range under the cover of firepower, and the defense line would collapse in an instant.

But it would be different if they retreated to the reverse slope. The humanoids' abandonment of the ridgeline would make the enemy's covering fire in front of them ineffective all of a sudden...then they could use the cover of the earthen ridge on the reverse slope to easily shoot and kill the enemies who crossed the ridge.

The only part of the hill that could be climbed over was the top; the sea and the cliffs prevented the enemy from launching a sneak attack from either side.

The tank that was captured earlier has now been moved by Xu Bin to the northeastern ridge where the slope is relatively gentle. It can firmly control this section of the ridge in its hands.

This made the work of the humanoids much easier. They were able to gather their strength to defend the more than 20-meter-long ridge in the southwest, and the consumption of ammunition was also reduced a lot.

This is the famous reverse slope tactic.

It had appeared on the battlefield of the Peninsula Country more than a hundred years ago, and was used by the volunteer soldiers of the Dragon Country to deal with the powerful firepower of the Eagle Federation Army.

Later, after continuous theoretical improvement, it has evolved into a mature defense system and appeared in military textbooks of various countries.

Of course, Xu Bin’s current arrangements are still far from a mature reverse slope tactic.

Real reverse slope tactics often require the use of many solid fortifications and tunnels to carry out operations, and even require marking the parameters for mortars on the positive slope in advance, so that the entire line of defense can be as solid as a rock.

But now Xu Bin didn’t even have time to dig a foxhole, let alone a mortar!

Therefore, he could only take things one step at a time. He couldn't escape anyway, so he had to at least buy time for the villagers of South Island to evacuate. This way, he could die with dignity...

Xu Bin brought Yuta to Naoki, said a few words to the two brothers, and then walked upstairs with his rifle.

"Commander, you shouldn't have come here."

Chuntian, who had already evacuated to the reverse slope, couldn't help but frowned slightly when he saw Xu Bin walking towards him.

The latter lay down beside her neatly, pointed his rifle forward, and replied with a smile:

"Hey, hiding in the back is just waiting to die, so why don't I go to the front and be a hero?"

"I mean this island."

"what?"

"You shouldn't have come to this island."

Chuntian turned around, with tears in her eyes. She said guiltily:

"A commander who takes such a big risk to find our subordinates and doesn't care about his own safety is... unqualified."

Looking at Chuntian who was in tears, Xu Bin could only smile bitterly and nodded and admitted:

"It is indeed unqualified... I will change this bad habit! I promise to change it in the next life. I will trouble you to supervise me then."

“Puff~”

The unexpected joke made Chuntian burst into laughter instantly. She covered her laughing mouth and continued to blame Xu Bin softly, while the latter just kept admitting his mistake...

Shhhhhhhhh

In the distance, two more flares rose into the air, and then the enemy's figures began to appear on the ridge line.

boom-!

Xu Bin was the first to pull the trigger and blew up an infantryman's head. Then the tanks in the distance also started firing at the enemy, and the battlefield immediately became lively again.

The Japanese soldiers who rushed up the ridge thought that the defenders were still lying on the ridge of the mountain, so they all put the safety on their rifles, and then rushed up with bayonets and stabbed the air randomly.

The result of this was that the first wave of enemies that rushed up were quickly shot down by the humanoids. Those standing on high ground either crouched down and hurriedly unlocked the safety, or lay on the reverse slope in a very awkward posture and shot headfirst. Therefore, they were all shot dead in a panic.

"Bastards, they're hiding on the reverse slope, throw grenades to blow them up!"

The last remaining instructor among the Japanese was now lying behind the ridge, giving orders to the trainees around him.

Then a shower of hand grenades flew over, and they rolled down quickly after hitting the ground. Most of them rolled along the ridge and exploded in the bumpy ditches, while some flew over the heads of the humanoids and fell to the foot of the mountain before exploding.

This is also a feature of reverse slope fortifications. The defenders only need to find a bunker facing a higher place. The grenades thrown by the enemy will either be blocked by the bunkers or fly over the heads of the figures and explode in the back... It is difficult for the enemy to make the grenades explode at the moment when they pass over the heads of the defenders.

..........

boom--!

Another loud bang sounded in front of the bunker, and then the battlefield fell silent.

"Go forward and destroy the enemy!"

When the Japanese instructor saw such a fierce rain of hand grenade, he naturally thought that the enemies below had been almost blown to death, so he waved his hand and ordered the trainees to search forward.

But unexpectedly, just as a combat team had just crossed the ridge, a burst of fierce gunfire was heard not far away on the reverse slope, and the team of more than a dozen people was wiped out in a few seconds.

"How is it possible? Could the enemy be unharmed?"

The Japanese instructor immediately became confused when he heard the gunshots that continued to increase in volume.

The fact was just as he thought. The Japanese had thrown away almost all of their grenades, but Xu Bin and his group hiding below were not in any trouble.

thump--

The Japanese soldiers who died on the high ground loosened their weapons, and a Taisho Type 1918 light machine gun rolled down along with several corpses. They fell right behind the bunker of Xu Bin and his group, scaring M into screaming.

"Don't be afraid, it's just a dead person."

While comforting the frightened humanoid, Xu Bin picked up the ammunition boxes and light machine gun from the corpse.

The Taisho Type 11 light machine gun, also known as the Type 99 light machine gun, is not very easy to use, but it is better than asking yourself to pull the bolt when you have a fever.

After simply tidying up his weapons, Xu Bin kicked the corpse down the mountain.

As for the Nambu XIV rifle on the corpse's waist? Even a dog wouldn't use it! Xu Binning could rely on the bayonet to protect himself but didn't want to touch it.
