Girls Frontline: Griffin Security
Chapter 104 Preparation before the war (2)
Hill 128 is the place closest to the northern border in the entire defense zone.
Climbing up the hillside with the soldier, Xu Bin soon saw the person who was waiting for him...
"Comrade Head, I have brought Mr. Xu from the PMC with me!"
The soldier trotted up, saluted and reported to a colonel who was squatting beside the tunnel smoking.
The latter also nodded, then straightened the brim of his hat, stood up and extended his hand to Xu Bin:
"Hello, I am Colonel Junis, the commander of the 38th Guards Tank Regiment of the Akstan Red Army. I am responsible for the combat readiness of this area." (The number is completely fictitious)
"Well, hello." Xu Bin stretched out his hand and shook hands with him.
Colonel Junis looked at him with a look of surprise in his eyes: "What a surprise... I didn't expect Griffin's boss to be so young."
"Are you surprised? We are just a newly established small company."
"Hahaha! Small company..." After hearing this, the other party actually laughed, "Don't you know how famous you are in the PMC industry?"
"Capturing Azar alive from the hands of the rebels, annihilating the airborne troops with lasers in their eyes in the Peninsula... not everyone can do this, so I dare to assign this defense zone to you!"
"Uh huh..." Xu Bin nodded awkwardly.
Having never been in the mercenary industry, he really didn't know how his "peers" would evaluate him. It seems that he needs to pay more attention in the future......
Then, Colonel Junis waved his hand and said, "Let's get down to business."
He took out his cell phone from his pocket and said, "We want to apply the defense method you mentioned to other defense areas, and we have conducted several exercises for this purpose. But for some reason, the results are always not ideal..."
Xu Bin looked up at the topographical photo on the other party's phone and immediately gave an answer: "The terrain is not suitable, Colonel."
Pointing at the image on the screen, he said: "The heights in these defense zones are too far apart. The friendly forces in the rear cannot provide cover for the surrounded tunnels. It is only a matter of time before they are trapped and killed."
"Are you trying to say that this tactic is only suitable for use in mountainous areas?"
"Yes, it will only work in an environment similar to the one in the northern part of the Peninsula. Otherwise, the enemy can completely bypass you and continue to attack deep into the country."
After answering the other party bluntly, Xu Bin found that Colonel Junis's eyes suddenly dimmed a lot.
It seems that he was worried about the other defense zones... He finally found a way to fight with less casualties, but was told that it could not be used.
What else could they do? They could only retreat to the settlement and fight for their lives. Xu Bin was helpless.
Colonel Junis sighed and asked again, "I heard that you proposed that the 3rd Company abandon Hill 128 and assist in the defense of the southern position, right?"
"Yes, it was my suggestion," Xu Bin nodded and admitted it.
This was what he had mentioned to Belik last night - after looking at the map several times, Xu Bin suddenly realized that Hill 128 was not suitable for defense, so he ran to talk to him about it.
Unexpectedly, he was rejected sternly by the other party. The reason was very simple: the task given to him by his superiors was "the active soldiers of the 3rd Company will take the lead and go to the frontmost high ground to meet the enemy's artillery fire, while the PMC members will guard the rear high ground to protect the supply line."
Giving up Hill 128 is tantamount to refusing to carry out the mission... At the very least, the captain will be sent to a military court; at the most serious level, if the enemy really attacks here, the strategic location in the rear will be destroyed!
Therefore, Belik refused to agree to anything and even brought his own regiment leader over today.
"Colonel, look at the slope of the mountain first," Xu Bin explained, "the south side is too flat. The enemy can drive their vehicles up and cover the engineers to seal the tunnel exit."
Pointing to the ground below, then to the contour lines on the map, he continued:
"The enemy's artillery shells won't have much error. Plus, there's only this high ground in this area. Wouldn't their artillery fire be directed here?"
"Yes, that makes sense," Colonel Junis nodded, "and the slope is too gentle, which is not conducive to your digging of fortifications. Look, this is almost dug into a tunnel, comrades of the 3rd Company..."
He smiled and pointed to the fortifications at his feet, causing the captain to lower his head in embarrassment.
Strike while the iron is hot, Xu Bin said: "Bringing them to the back will also help ease our manpower shortage. You know, there are really not enough defense personnel in the forests on both sides."
"Well... okay!" The colonel waved his hand and turned around and said:
"Comrade Belik, I think Mr. Xu Bin's opinion is very good, so I agree that you should give up the 128th position. Do you have any other opinions?"
"No, comrade commander!" Belik immediately stepped forward and answered, while looking at Xu Bin with gratitude.
It seems that he also thought that Hill 128 could not be defended, but he felt uncomfortable giving it up. It was the conversation between the commander and Xu Bin that made him understand the stakes.
Seeing that Belik had begun to withdraw his troops and lay mines, Colonel Junis looked at Xu Bin:
"As you just said, there are not enough people in the forests on both sides of the high ground. I believe that even if we send in another 200 people, it will still be the same. So do you have any ideas?"
"Hmm...let me think about it." Xu Bin lowered his head and began to think.
The Colonel Junis in front of him was obviously an excellent officer who was willing to accept different opinions, so Xu Bin didn't want to let him go. Once he left, he didn't know who to discuss his ideas with...
Forest....understaffed...understaffed.....
Got it!
Xu Bin's eyes lit up and he immediately laughed: "Colonel, do you know about the North African campaign during World War II?"
"Of course, I love studying World War II," Junis replied with a smile, "especially Rommel. I'm a fan of his. I can't sleep when I read Infantry Attack!"
"As it happens, my idea is related to Rommel. You know him in North Africa-"
"Mobile defense! Do you mean mobile defense?" Colonel Junes suddenly shouted excitedly, scaring the guards behind him.
This guy... is indeed a good fan of Rommel! As soon as I mentioned North Africa, he immediately thought of what I was going to say.
That’s absolutely right. The plan Xu Bin thought of was exactly the “mobile defense method” that the famous “Desert Fox” - Rommel had come up with.
It is also called "elastic defense" and its principle is very simple:
When you have insufficient troops, there is no need to throw them into trenches everywhere. Instead, you should form a "highly mobile" reserve and move along the road behind the defense line. Wherever the enemy attacks, quickly send the reserve there. When the attack is repelled, take the reserve back and wait for the next reinforcement.
In this way, there would no longer be a need to arrange so many people at various defense points in the forest - the enemy could not maneuver quickly through the forest using vehicles and could only rely on infiltrating infantry to slowly push forward, so even if there were few people at the defense point, they could still hold out for a while.
But the defenders also need to consider this issue.
So Colonel Junis asked again: "Can our reserve troops be quickly deployed to the firefighting position? This forest is quite large and it is not convenient to drive in the forest..."
"No, you can drive in the forest!" Xu Bin interrupted the other party's doubts, "Why don't we open a lane in the forest? Plan a route, clear the obstacles, improve some of the road surface, and then the defense points can be arranged based on this line."
"Okay... I understand what you mean. I can try it!"
Unexpectedly, the answer was so simple, and the colonel felt relieved:
"I'll go back right now and mobilize the residents in the rear to help you clear the way. If you have any problems in the future, let Belik contact me for you. My command post will give you the green light!"
