A farmer's daughter travels through time, farming and dividing the family to fight for the best
Chapter 3 Golden Finger
Sun was a person without any ideas and listened to Li Dahai in everything. She felt relieved after hearing what Li Xiaoxiao said.
Li Xiaoxiao called Li Ruolan and went to the main room together to ask for a set of pots and pans, as well as the 200 kilograms of coarse grains that they would share.
Old lady Li watched them carry things out little by little, and kept making indirect accusations. Li Xiaoxiao didn't care and let her scold her. She carried the things to her room in several batches, and was so tired that she was sweating.
"Mom, I'm hungry, please cook quickly." Li Xiaoxiao was really hungry. She didn't eat enough in the morning and it was already mid-afternoon.
"Okay, wait, I'll do it right away." After saying that, Sun quickly untied the rice bag, filled a small bowl of brown rice, and prepared to wash the rice to make porridge.
Sun gave birth to three children in total. The eldest, Li Ruolan, was 17 years old, the second, Li Xiaoxiao, was 16 years old, and the youngest was her son Li Huawen, who was 7 years old.
Li Ruolan has been working in the fields with her mother since she was a child. She has the same personality as her mother, weak and vulnerable. Her mouth is like a gourd with a lid closed, and she doesn't say a word for a long time. She is completely opposite to Li Xiaoxiao.
Li Huawen was small and thin, but because his father, Li Dahai, was not well-liked, he did not receive any favor from Grandma Li even though he was a boy.
When Li Xiaoxiao saw the half bowl of brown rice in Sun's hand, she was speechless. Who could eat half a bowl of brown rice? It could make them full.
"Mom, my head still hurts. I want to eat some dry rice. Please put more rice in it."
Sun hesitated for a moment, thinking that her daughter had suffered so much today and was weak, so she needed some nourishment.
He took two bowls of rice from the grain bag again, rinsed the rice and poured it into the pot, and added an appropriate amount of water.
Li Xiaoxiao felt a little emotional. This family was really poor. Thinking back to the past, she would always order a large table of dishes when she went out to eat and never pack anything up. It was such a waste.
I looked around the house they lived in. It was a mud-brick house with two rooms. The outer room was slightly larger and had a kang (a hard bed) with a mattress on it. It looked quite old, but it was very clean.
There was a pot connected to the big kang. Steam was coming out of the pot, which contained their lunch. The lid was made of iron. After years of use, the edge of the lid had rusted, revealing a hole the size of a baby's fist. The hot steam from the pot was coming out through the hole. There were a lot of grass clippings on the ground. The roof was black due to years of smoke and fire, making the house dim.
A small table, obviously handmade and very rough, with four benches of different sizes, which are their dining table and chairs, nothing else.
There was a curtain separating it from the inner room, which was a little smaller. Through the only small window, one could see clearly that it also had a large kang, where she and Li Ruolan lived. There was a large wooden cabinet on the floor, which contained the clothes of all the five members of their family.
For the first time, Li Xiaoxiao experienced firsthand what it meant to be penniless.
Li Xiaoxiao was already injured, and having just moved a few things, he felt exhausted all over. While Sun was cooking, he simply lay down on the bed to rest for a while.
The mattress under him was hard. It was the same mattress that Li Xiaoxiao had been using ever since she could remember, and it was covered with patches.
I touched the shriveled belly. This body is too thin. The ribs are clearly visible. He works more than a cow and eats less than a chicken. It would be strange if he is not thin.
I miss Zhang Ji’s big meat buns downstairs from her house so much. Each one has a thin skin and a lot of fillings. The taste is delicious and the soup is rich. Every bite makes me feel so happy. It’s a pity that I can’t eat them anymore.
Just as he was thinking this, he suddenly felt a warm feeling in his hand, which surprised Li Xiaoxiao. He subconsciously raised the thing in his hand and was stunned for a moment.
It turned out to be the big meat bun that she wanted to eat just now, and it was the same as she remembered. Li Xiaoxiao used to like reading novels and saw that many time travelers had various golden fingers. Could this be her golden finger?
Without having time to think, he quickly turned sideways to cover the bun in his hand, and did not care about hygiene anymore, he started eating in big mouthfuls. It would be troublesome if others found out.
After eating a big bun, her hunger was mostly gone. Because it was daytime and there were people outside, Li Xiaoxiao decided to study her golden finger more carefully at night.
Soon, the meal was ready. When Li Xiaoxiao came out from the inner room, Sun had already served the meal and placed it on the table, four bowls of rice plus a small half bowl.
Li Xiaoxiao didn't care and picked up the bowl and took a bite. Although it was brown rice, it had a fresh fragrance in its mouth. It turned out that the unpolluted ones were delicious. He took a few more bites.
When she looked up accidentally, she saw Sun eating the small bowl of rice. She understood instantly, "Mom, there is too much rice in my bowl. I can't finish it. Can you help me eat some?"
Without waiting for Sun to speak, Li Xiaoxiao scooped a few scoops of rice from her bowl into Sun's bowl. Sun hurriedly tried to stop her. Li Ruolan and Li Huawen followed suit and also scooped the rice from their bowls into Sun's bowl. Seeing that they all insisted, Sun no longer refused and the whole family ate with relish.
Li Xiaoxiao saw it all and was filled with joy. Although this family was a little poor, the fact that they lived in harmony was more precious than anything else. As an orphan in the 21st century, it also greatly satisfied her wish of having brothers and sisters. She firmly believed that as long as she worked hard, she would be able to lead her family to a well-off life. Invisibly, Li Xiaoxiao took on the responsibility of supporting the family.
After dinner, the family discussed what to do next. When they went to move the food just now, they angered Old Mrs. Li, so they asked them to move out today.
Li Dahai was ashamed, annoyed, angry and anxious. He wanted to go find Old Man Li, but was stopped by Li Xiaoxiao.
"Dad, don't you understand who is the head of the Li family?" Li Xiaoxiao stopped there.
Li Dahai froze for a moment, then looked listless and stopped talking. Li Xiaoxiao didn't care about his emotions at this moment. It would be better for him to face the facts sooner so that his father wouldn't have any sympathy in the future.
"Dad, I'll go find the village head and find a piece of vacant land so we can build a temporary thatched hut." Li Xiaoxiao thought about it and realized that the hay used to build the hut was not ordinary grass, but reeds specially cut from the riverside. Every household in the countryside would have reed stalks, which were used to repair roofs during the rainy season. The Li family also had some, but they would not give them any. So they would go to their neighbors to buy some. It was not the rainy season now, so it should be easy to buy.
Li Xiaoxiao went to the headman's house first. The headman knew her purpose and found her a suitable place to build a thatched hut. The place was about three or four meters wide, and there were houses on three sides, left, right and back. Li Xiaoxiao was very satisfied, as this saved her a lot of work. The thatched hut was also solid. It was located at the west end of the village, not far from Li's house.
After thanking the head of the village, Li Xiaoxiao went to Li Quanfu's house at the east end of the village. Qinghe Village has only one main street running east-west. Almost the entire Qinghe Village is on this main street. The village is not big, with only a hundred or so households. If there is anything happening in the village, the whole village will soon know about it. In rural areas, gossip spreads the fastest.
