In the ordinary life of Crayon Shin-chan
Chapter 80 Making Candied Haws
Mingxu got up early in the morning, then turned to look at the mother and son who were still lying in bed behind him. He twitched his mouth helplessly and went forward to wake Meiya up: "Mom, get up, didn't you say you were going to pick some fruit today~"
"Xiao Xu, let mommy sleep for a while longer, just a little while." Meiya buried her head in the quilt, stretched out a finger and said.
Mingxu turned to look at Xiaoxin: "Xiaoxin, it's time to eat the candied haws~"
"Where, where?" Xiao Xinyan suddenly opened his eyes and looked around excitedly, but he didn't see what he wanted to see. He looked at Mingxu with some disappointment.
"Didn't you say you wanted to make candied haws?" Mingxu shrugged. Yesterday, when passing by the street, Xiaoxin saw a stall selling candied haws and wanted to eat some, but Meiya saw that they were placed on the roadside like that, covered in dust and looked unhygienic, so she refused. When Xiaoxin was about to make a fuss, Meiya suggested that they could make the candied haws by themselves, and that they would have more flavor.
Xiao Xinwen's mouth immediately watered, and he nodded excitedly. But now the fruit stalls are basically closed, and if you want to buy fruit, you can only wait until the next day, so there is this scene today.
"Mom, get up. Mom~" Xiaoxin woke up and saw Meiya still in the quilt behind him. He immediately lay on Meiya's quilt, pressing her down, and his voice was very flattering.
"Okay, okay, I'm getting up. I have goose bumps all over my body." Meiya hurriedly got up and touched the goose bumps on her arms. It seemed that she was really a little disgusted by Xiaoxin's voice. The two got up, packed up, had dinner, and set off.
The three of them walked arm in arm in the bustling crowd. Their destination was the fruit stand on the corner. Today they planned to pick fresh fruits together and make candied haws.
As soon as he walked into the fruit stand, all kinds of fruits came into view, colorful and fragrant. Xiaoxin's eyes lit up, and he jumped to the front of the stand like a little monkey, reaching out to grab a red apple.
"Xiao Xin, remember to check whether the fruit is fresh first." Mei Ya reminded gently.
Xiaoxin nodded and followed his mother's example, carefully checking whether the fruit's skin was smooth and its color was bright. He chose a particularly red apple and proudly showed it to his mother.
"Very good, this apple looks fresh." Meiya nodded appreciatively.
Mingxu was silently selecting the oranges. Although his movements were not as exaggerated as Xiaoxin's, he was also very serious. He picked up an orange, smelled it carefully, and then touched it gently, as if he was feeling the texture of the fruit.
"Mingxu, what do you think of this orange?" Meiya asked.
Mingxu nodded and said with a smile: "This orange has a strong fragrance, it should be very sweet."
The three chatted and chose, and soon they picked a basket of fresh fruits, including red apples, yellow oranges, green grapes, etc. These fruits sparkled in the sun, as if they were looking forward to being made into delicious candied haws.
After buying the fruits, the three of them went back to prepare to make candied haws.
The first step is to prepare the ingredients. Meiya and Mingxu washed the fruits they bought, and then they peeled the fruits together. Xiaoxin excitedly turned around and picked up a peeled apple, took a bite, and squinted his eyes in satisfaction.
"Xiao Xin, don't be greedy, we still have to make candied haws!" Mei Ya reminded with a smile.
Xiaoxin stuck out his tongue and nodded obediently. Mingxu was silently selecting fruits on the side. Although his movements were not fast, he was very serious in every step.
Next is stringing the fruits. Meiya took out some thin bamboo sticks, and Xiaoxin and Mingxu each took one and started stringing the fruits one by one. Xiaoxin stringed the fruits very quickly, and soon he had strung several strings, but his stringing method was a bit random, and the distances between some fruits were uneven, which looked a bit messy.
When stringing the fruits, Xiaoxin was even more naughty. He didn't string the fruits carefully like Mingxu, but strung the fruits all over the place, and some fruits even fell to the ground.
Mei Ya saw this and reminded him: "Xiao Xin, you can't do this! You have to be more serious!"
Shin-chan responded with a giggle: "It's okay, it's more fun this way!" and then continued his mischief.
"Bang!" Xiao Xin became quiet, Ming Xu chuckled and couldn't help laughing. It was just as expected.
Under Meiya's and Xiaoxin's resentful gaze, Mingxu put away his smile and continued to carefully adjust the position of each fruit, ensuring that they were neat and uniform and looked very beautiful.
"Xiao Xin, you have to learn from Mingxu. You can't be impatient when doing things. You have to take your time to do them well~" Meiya looked at the candied haws that Xiao Xin had strung together. Her voice was gentle, but full of oppression.
Xiao Xin curled his lips, somewhat unconvinced, but having accepted his lesson, he nodded obediently and began to imitate Mingxu's way of stringing.
After selecting the fruits, it was time to boil the syrup. Meiya put rock sugar and water into the pot and slowly boiled it. This time, she tested the extent to which the syrup covered the fruits, so she didn't boil too much. Xiaoxin and Mingxu stood aside, curiously watching the syrup in the pot slowly become viscous.
"Mom, why do we need to make syrup?" Xiao Xin asked curiously.
"Because the syrup can make the surface of the fruit smoother and also increase the sweetness of the candied haws." Meiya explained patiently.
"And the syrup can neutralize the sour taste of the fruit." Mingxu said as he silently observed the color and viscosity of the syrup. He silently calculated the time in his mind, waiting for the best opportunity.
Xiao Xin's eyes darted around, and suddenly his eyes fell on a jar of salt on the kitchen counter. He blinked, and a wonderful idea popped up in his mind: If salt is added to the syrup, will the candied haws become both sweet and salty? This idea excited Xiao Xin, and he decided to give it a try.
He carefully picked up the salt shaker, standing on tiptoe, trying not to make any noise so as not to be discovered by Meiya and Xiaoxu. Then, he gently unscrewed the lid of the salt shaker, pinched a pinch of salt with his fingertips, and quietly sprinkled it into the syrup that was being boiled.
As soon as the salt touched the hot syrup, it immediately dissolved and disappeared into the syrup. Shin-chan watched the changes in the syrup nervously and expectantly, waiting for a miracle to happen.
Mingxu also noticed Xiaoxin's behavior, raised his eyebrows, and said nothing. This kid still hasn't been beaten by society. He waited for things to develop.
When the syrup was ready, Mingxu first took a few skewers to try.
However, things did not go as Shin-chan expected. When the syrup cooled and was coated on the fruit, the unique salty-sweet taste did not appear, but made the candied haws taste weird and unpalatable. Shin-chan looked at the candied haws in his hand, and his eyes, which were originally full of expectation, became a little disappointed.
He realized that his prank had not succeeded, but instead ruined the delicious candied haws. He lowered his head and said nothing, his heart filled with guilt and regret.
Mom noticed that Xiaoxin was acting strange, and came over to ask with concern: "Xiaoxin, what's wrong? Is the candied haws not tasty?"
"Of course not. The candied haws with salt would taste weird," Mingxu complained.
"..." Meiya looked at Xiaoxin speechlessly. Fortunately, this time the syrup was just an attempt. She wanted to see if it could be wrapped to this extent, so she didn't boil it too much. She put her hand on Xiaoxin's head and touched it. Meiya didn't say much. After cleaning up the syrup in the pot, she boiled another pot. The previous pot was still very successful, so she did it again according to the above.
Finally, the syrup was ready. Meiya put the skewered fruits into the pot and gently rolled them so that each string of candied haws was evenly coated with syrup. Xiaoxin and Mingxu watched their mother's technique intently, afraid of missing any details.
The last step is cooling. Mom puts the candied haws wrapped in syrup aside to cool, waiting for them to harden. Xiaoxin and Mingxu can't wait to gather around, staring at the candied haws, as if they will suddenly disappear.
"Mom, when will they get better?" Xiao Xin asked anxiously.
"It's almost there, it's almost there, just be patient." Meiya said with a smile.
Finally, after a period of waiting, the candied haws were ready. Xiaoxin and Mingxu picked up the candied haws they made and tasted them carefully. The sweet but not greasy taste spread in their mouths, as if the whole world had become sweet.
"Mom, is our cooking delicious?" asked Shin-chan with blinking eyes.
"Of course it's delicious, you guys did a great job!" Meiya praised with a smile.
Mingxu also showed a satisfied smile. The food he made really tasted great.
