The enormous pressure and temperature of up to 1500 million degrees Celsius inside the sun allow hydrogen nuclear fusion to proceed uninterruptedly.
On Earth, since it is impossible to obtain such a huge pressure, the only way to make up for it is to increase the temperature. To achieve hydrogen nuclear fusion, a temperature of nearly 100 million degrees is required.
There are many challenges in achieving controlled nuclear fusion, the most important of which is how to confine the reactants with temperatures as high as hundreds of millions of degrees Celsius within a certain space and make them react stably and continuously.
There are two main common solutions.
One is magnetic confinement fusion: using magnetic fields to confine charged plasma, allowing it to run at low density for as long as possible to achieve nuclear fusion energy gain.
The tokamak device is a major method of magnetic confinement fusion. It is donut-shaped and confines fusion plasma inside by designing a magnetic field.
For example, the EAST of later countries and the ITER project of international cooperation are both tokamak devices.
However, the ITER project faces many technical challenges during its construction and requires solving a large number of problems.
The second is inertial confinement fusion: also known as laser fusion, which stores deuterium and tritium fuel in a tiny target pellet, uses multiple beams of strong lasers or converts them into X-rays to ablate the recoil-compressed fuel target pellet, and achieves high-density nuclear fusion in a short time.
After one hundred millionth of a second, the combustion stops due to the inertia of the fuel exploding outwards.
This scheme was later adopted by the National Ignition Facility of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the United States. In the experiment, the device achieved for the first time a net energy gain of more than 54% of the input energy in fusion energy, which was an important breakthrough for mankind on the road to achieving controlled nuclear fusion.
Of course, high difficulty usually also means high rewards.
Controlled nuclear fusion has many advantages, such as:
Abundant fuel sources: Deuterium is abundant in the Earth's seawater, with a reserve of up to 40 trillion tons. If all of it is used for fusion reactions, the energy released will be enough for humans to use for tens of billions of years. Although tritium is rare on Earth, it can be obtained through the conversion of lithium.
Clean and pollution-free: The reaction products are mainly neutrons and helium without radioactive pollution. It does not produce greenhouse gases or products with long radioactive periods, and is very environmentally friendly.
High safety: Once a problem occurs in any link, the fuel temperature drops and the fusion reaction will automatically terminate, and accidents like nuclear fission nuclear power plants will not occur.
If it is commercialized, it will provide mankind with a nearly unlimited, clean and safe new energy source.
While being able to effectively solve the energy crisis, it can also promote another revolution in science and technology.
