Chapter 257: New Camp in the Swamp

"Intellectuals really think things through." Lin Yan sighed to himself.

In his opinion, Marybeth is a truly smart person. Even a husband and wife would go their separate ways when faced with a disaster, let alone this kind of simple partnership. If the market is good, then everyone can work together, and if it is not good, just break up and go their separate ways. How can you risk your life for some unfounded promise?

"You said Pastor Swanson is leaving too?" The pastor, who was usually weird and either drunk or on his way to get drunk, had almost no presence in the camp and people only remembered him when someone was hurt.

Sadie shook her head imperceptibly: "I don't know whether he will leave or not, but I think he has changed a lot compared to before."

"Okay, I'll have a good talk with these guys later, and I'll persuade as many of them as I can to leave."

The two chatted as they walked, and on the way Lin Yan did not forget to look for those suspicious people who were walking on the road but did not look like passers-by as described by Hosea yesterday.

But until he arrived in Lagrasse, he didn't see any suspicious passers-by on the road.

Lin Yan speculated that it was because Pinkerton caused such a big fuss in Saint Denis that not only did they fail to catch anyone, but they also caused a big mess, which had a great impact on Pinkerton's image, so all the other side withdrew from the operation.

Since no suspicious people were found, Lin Yan only needs to confirm that the new camp is suitable for everyone to live in, and the relocation will basically be a done deal.

There is no need to take the water route to reach the abandoned village where Thomas and his companions had come from. Therefore, after Lin Yan arrived in Lagras, he did not go to find Thomas first. Instead, he took Sadie from the entrance of Lagras village to the north and went deep into the swamp based on his memory.

The further they walked, the denser the trees around them became. The trees here were all covered with mosses because of the humid air, and some vines even killed the trees they were clinging to in order to compete with the trees for nutrients and sunlight.

Relying on basic tracking techniques, Lin Yan led Sadie through twists and turns in this humid forest and successfully found the ruins of the abandoned village.

Standing at the entrance of the village, Lin Yan looked around. There were only three or four decent houses in the entire village. The others had either collapsed or were too small and completely unsuitable for living.

"Are you planning to let other people move here?" Sadie glanced around the dilapidated village and turned to ask Lin Yan for his opinion.

"I think it's okay..." Lin Yan got off his horse and walked towards the nearest house: "Except for the high humidity, there is no other problem."

Walking to the door, Lin Yan stretched out his hand and pushed the door, but it didn't budge. So he walked to the half-open window and looked behind the door. "Hey, this door actually has a bolt."

He jumped into the house, removed the bolt from the inside, opened the door and let Sadie in. Then Lin Yan checked the whole house by himself, focusing on whether the roof was leaking and whether the floor was rotten. After checking this house, Lin Yan went through the remaining houses that looked intact.

Lin Yan was very satisfied with the results of the investigation. Judging from the degree of decay inside these houses, this abandoned village seemed to have been abandoned two or three years ago. The overall structure of these intact houses was quite solid, the floors were fine, and there were only two damaged places on the roof. It was obvious that the fishermen had put a lot of effort into selecting the wood to build the houses.

"What do you think? I think this place is better than Shadibele. At least this time everyone has a house to live in." After coming out of the last wooden house, Lin Yan could no longer hide his joy of moving into a new home.

Sadie accidentally stepped into a mud puddle when she came out just now, and now she is rubbing the mud on the soles of her shoes with a wooden board. "If you had asked earlier, I would have said it was very good. But now, the mud puddle on the ground is annoying me, I can only say that this place is okay."

"Ha, don't care about these small details." Lin Yan stomped his feet hard, feeling the softness and hardness of the land: "After moving here, we just need to make a few more bonfires, and this problem will be solved soon. But it's so humid here, I don't know if the wood can be lit..." He was talking to himself in the second half of the sentence.

"Let's go. Let's go find Thomas and let him know. After all, we are living in someone else's old house, so we still have to say hello." Lin Yan mounted his horse and urged Sadie, who was still rubbing the soles of his shoes.

When going back, Lin Yan did not return along the original route, but planned to open up a relatively straight road suitable for carriages. However, he gave up decisively before he had walked halfway. This swamp was not like the solid plains and hills. It was full of mud and some places were simply puddles. After being pitted many times, Lin Yan finally understood a truth: if there was a shortcut, the predecessors would have taken it long ago, so it would not be his turn to open it.

After being humiliated many times, Lin Yan obediently turned back to the road they had taken. Although Sadie didn't say anything from beginning to end, Lin Yan clearly felt a hint of teasing from her upturned mouth and slightly narrowed eyes.

Damn it! I wanted to show off, but I didn't expect that I would lose face instead of gaining honor. Lin Yan cursed himself for getting carried away, stretched out his hand to press down the brim of his hat, and walked back without saying a word.

Returning to the entrance of Lagrasse Village and just turning into the village road, Lin Yan saw Thomas struggling to carry a few shrimp cages towards his home.

Seeing this, Lin Yan quickly jumped off his horse and rushed to his side, taking most of the shrimp cages from him.

"Thank you..." Thomas was so focused on holding the shrimp cage that he didn't notice the person coming next to him. However, the sudden lightening of the weight in his hand made him realize at once that someone was helping him.

"Hey, it's you." Thomas turned around and unexpectedly found that the person who helped him was Lin Yan. He smiled immediately, even though he looked tired just now. "Mr. Custer, it's nice to see you again. Are you here to see me because you can use me again?"

"Look at what you said. Can't I just come to see you?" Lin Yan said with a look of anger.

"Of course." Thomas said with a smile, "It's better to come at the right time than to come early. You came at the right time today. The shrimp traps we set up last night had a great harvest today. I'll treat you to shrimp for lunch today."

"No need to bother." Arriving at the door of Thomas's house, Lin Yan bent down and put the shrimp cages in his arms together with Thomas's, then stood up and said, "I did come here today to ask you a favor, or rather, to ask everyone in your village a favor."
