Chapter 216 Swamp Rumors

Going in the water again? In this alligator-infested swamp? I thought you were just standing on the shore shouting...

To be honest, Lin Yan did not admire this supposedly "experienced" old fisherman. On the contrary, his "foolish boldness" made Lin Yan look down on him. People only have one life, and everyone should be responsible for their own life. Ignoring safety issues and getting hurt or losing one's life is the most stupid behavior in his opinion.

Under Thomas's leadership, the soft "water road" under their feet soon came to an end, and below was the thrilling wading section.

Thomas held up the lantern and warned, "Everyone spread out and pay attention to if there's anything coming around. Yes, I'm talking about alligators. There's nothing else to watch out for here except these things."

The four of them walked forward for a while, and Lin Yan realized that the water in the swamp was not as deep as he had imagined. The water was only above his knees, and there were not many crocodiles in the water. After walking for a long time, they only saw one, and it was a small alligator that was small in size and posed no threat to humans.

Even when facing this small alligator, Thomas acted as if he was facing a formidable enemy. He reminded everyone to stop from a distance, and did not move again until the small alligator swam away. This caution made Lin Yan's opinion of him change a little.

"Don't underestimate these little crocodiles. Although they pose no threat to you, if you alarm them, they will attract a group of crocodiles. By then, no matter how powerful you are, you will have no choice but to run away."

After walking for a while, the group still didn't see Jules. The only sound in the entire area except for the croaking of frogs was the sound of water caused by Lin Yan and his friends' footsteps.

Arthur was getting impatient, so he urged, "We've been walking around for so long, and we haven't even seen a ghost. Can't you send a signal to your partner or something?"

Thomas also felt a little strange. He scratched his head and asked in confusion, "That shouldn't be the case. Jules just rowed to check the shrimp traps we set up earlier. Logically, he should have finished checking and headed back now."

"Could there be any accident..." Lin Yan guessed.

"No." Thomas denied, "The crocodiles here generally don't attack boats, otherwise we would have been in trouble over the years."

"Let's go a little further. Maybe there's something wrong with the shrimp cage and he's fixing it."

After walking a few steps forward, Thomas, who was in charge of leading the way, paused and said, "Wait, I think I kicked something." As he spoke, he bent down and fished out a square cage from the water.

The cage was made of wire and wood, and Lin Yan guessed that this should be the shrimp cage that Thomas had just mentioned. However, this cage was severely damaged, almost only half of its original size, and it was obviously unusable.

"I guess the thing in the cage didn't want to be caught, so it 'broke out'." Arthur looked at the cage that was only half destroyed and made a joke.

No one took it seriously. It was just half a cage. Any crocodile could bite it like this. Only Thomas looked solemn and muttered to himself: "Oh... God... Could that rumor be true..."

"What rumor?" Dutch asked as he looked around.

Thomas threw the cage back into the water. "There has been a rumor that there is a giant beast here, a gigantic crocodile that is twice the size of a boat, but no one has ever seen it, so everyone thinks the rumor is nonsense. If there really is such a big crocodile, how much food would it eat every day? I'm afraid there would be nothing left in this area long ago."

"Then what exactly destroyed the cage?" Lin Yan continued to ask.

Thomas shrugged. "Maybe just a bigger alligator, just not that big."

"Can we keep going?" Dutch urged, "Hurry up and find the person we are looking for. I don't want to stay here any longer."

Thomas raised the lantern again. "The last cage is in front of us. If nothing goes wrong, we will find the person soon."

Walking further, the water that was originally knee-deep became higher again, first to the thighs, then to the waist, and the deepest part was almost close to the chest. Fortunately, such low places were only a few meters long.

Revolvers are not afraid of water, and will not misfire or malfunction even after being soaked in water. It's just that river water will corrode metal, so they need to be maintained after soaking. This is not a difficult task for the people who deal with guns all day long, so even though the other revolvers on the belts were completely submerged in water, everyone was still not worried.

In the misty swamp, Lin Yan vaguely saw a dim light appearing on the water in front of him. It was not a tree, but something floating on the water. He blinked, confirmed that he was not mistaken, pointed at the unknown object in the distance and shouted: "Do you see it? There seems to be something over there!"

The others looked in the direction Lin Yan pointed. Arthur looked far away, his eyes wide open, but he didn't notice anything unusual. "Is there? Why didn't I see it?"

Dutch and Thomas also said they didn't see anything.

"Ah? You guys can't see it?" Seeing that no one else saw it, Lin Yan began to doubt whether he had seen it wrong. However, the direction he pointed was exactly the direction Thomas was going. Continuing to walk forward would just be able to verify whether what Lin Yan saw was an illusion.

After walking a few steps forward, Arthur and Dutch spoke at the same time:

"There does seem to be something on the water."

"Jamie is right, I saw it too."

Thomas squinted his eyes and looked again and again, then he guessed uncertainly: "Maybe it's a boat, maybe it's a piece of driftwood..." Halfway through, he shouted at the top of his voice: "Jules - is that you -"

There was no response from the fog ahead. Thomas shouted a few more times as he walked forward, but until everyone was sure that the object in the distance was Thomas's boat, Thomas' shouting still received no response.

"Could something have really happened..." Thomas silently quickened his pace, but still did not give up calling Jules' name.

It was not until they were about ten meters away from the boat that they found Jules, still in shock, sitting on a tree near the boat.

"Hey, man, what happened?" As Jules' partner, Thomas was very familiar with him, but he had never seen Jules look like this.

"There's... there's a... monster in the water!" Jules hugged the tree trunk tightly, his eyes wandering. "The rumor is... it's true, there really is a giant crocodile, it almost... almost ate me just now..."
