In ancient China, the stars in the sky were divided into seven star regions, namely "Three Enclosures" and "Four Symbols". The so-called "enclosure" means "city wall".

The three enclosures are arranged in a triangle around the North Star. Outside the three enclosures are the four symbols: the Azure Dragon in the East, the White Tiger in the West, the Vermillion Bird in the South, and the Black Tortoise in the North.

That is to say, the eastern constellation is like a dragon, the western constellation is like a tiger, the southern constellation is like a big bird, and the northern constellation is like a turtle and a snake.

As the earth revolves around the sun, the stars in the sky change with the seasons. In the evening between winter and spring, the blue dragon appears; at the turn of spring and summer, the red bird rises; at the turn of summer and autumn, the white tiger shows its head; at the turn of autumn and winter, the black tortoise rises. They are collectively called the "Four Great Divine Beasts".

In addition, the four divine beasts are also four of the "six beasts" corresponding to the six-line hexagrams of the Book of Changes, collectively known as the "six gods", namely the Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, Gouchen, Teng Snake, White Tiger, and Black Tortoise. In addition to representing the five elements and directions, they also reflect the hexagram information.

The four beasts are also a reference to the auspicious and inauspicious times of the twelve-hour system in China. Usually, the Azure Dragon corresponds to an auspicious time, while the White Tiger, Vermillion Bird, and Black Tortoise correspond to an inauspicious time.

When Ao Qing's original body was in the Blue Continent, he seemed to remember that the Four Symbols were originally the patron saints of the four directions: Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermillion Bird, and Black Tortoise, the four spirits of heaven, who rectified the four directions.

The Azure Dragon on the left, the White Tiger on the right, the Vermillion Bird in front and the Black Tortoise behind, the four spiritual beasts guard the four palaces of east, west, south and north, warding off evil and regulating yin and yang. They are the gods of the four directions.

Later, as Taoism evolved, the Four Symbols were gradually personified and given titles: the Azure Dragon was called "Meng Zhang God", the White Tiger was called "Jian Bing God", the Vermillion Bird was called "Ling Guang God" and the Black Tortoise was called "Zhi Ming God".

"The Azure Dragon on the left is named Meng Zhang. Mao Wen. The White Tiger on the right is named Jian Bing. You Wen. The Vermillion Bird in front is named Ling Guang. Wu Wen. The Black Tortoise behind is named Zhi Ming. Zi Wen."

When Taoists perform rituals, they are guarded by four symbols. The Taoist Canon records in its book “The Secret of Prolonging Life in the Purple Court of the Seven Elements of the Big Dipper” that, on the left there is a Azure Dragon named Mengzhang, on the right there is a White Tiger named Jianbing, in front there is a Vermillion Bird named Lingguang, and behind there is a Black Tortoise named Zhiming. They hold flags and banners, and carry bells and drums on their backs. They are in front, behind, left and right of me.

It can be seen that the two combinations of "Four Spirits" and "Four Gods" exist at the same time. The former refers to rare creatures on the ground (except turtles), and the latter refers to the stars in the sky.

In this way, the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermillion Bird and Black Tortoise, also commonly known as the "Four Spirits", are actually star gods who guard their posts in the four directions of the sky and protect the order and harmony of heaven and earth. The buildings on the ground emphasize "Azure Dragon on the left and White Tiger on the right" in order to correspond to the stars and to emphasize the correspondence between heaven and earth.

In the Sixuan Palace, the four divine beasts are considered to hold the position of demon saints.

Under the Demon Saint are the Demon General, Demon General, Grand Commander, Commander, Battalion, Squadron, and Squad.

A squad has twelve people, a squadron can manage twelve squads, and a battalion can manage twelve squadrons, and so on.

Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermillion Bird, and Black Tortoise each have twelve subordinates, and each of them has the strength of a Taiyi Golden Immortal.

The Demon Saint needs to be a Daluo Golden Immortal, the Demon Commander needs to be a Taiyi Golden Immortal, and the Demon General needs to be at the Golden Immortal level. The Grand Commander needs to be a Taiyi Xuan Immortal, the Captain needs to be a Xuan Immortal, the Squadron leaders are generally True Immortals, and finally there are the Squad Leaders, who need to be at the peak of the Heavenly Immortal level, and some Squad Leaders even need to be at the early stage of True Immortal.

The Sixuan Palace has a total of several million demon forces, and this huge energy makes other sects jealous.
