Personality V: I will save everything
Chapter 588 Killing the Hound
After dealing with Miss Jenny's affairs, Holmes and Sir Henry looked at each other and understood each other. It was time for them, the men, to take responsibility.
"We should find some more weapons," said Holmes thoughtfully.
He touched his waist out of habit and found the pistol was still there, which made him feel a little relieved.
However, he noticed that Sir Henry was not carrying any weapons, which made him feel a little worried.
"If we are separated, Sir Henry, how will you protect yourself?" Holmes' tone became serious. "After all, if the hound is a large, trained hound, even if it does not kill you, at least you will lose a piece of your flesh."
Sir Henry was silent for a moment, and then he smiled suddenly, as if he had made up his mind.
He turned and walked into his room, and after a while, he took out an axe from under the bed.
The axe looked old, and the blade gleamed coldly under the light.
Sir Henry looked at it with a look of satisfaction, and said:
"I found this in the warehouse when I came to this manor. At that time, I thought it might come in handy, so I kept it here without telling anyone. Originally, I wanted to use it to guard against the ghost hound, but now it seems that it has become a weapon for us to hunt the hound."
.................................................. ........................
"........"
Sir Henry and Holmes stood side by side, each gazing silently at the single candle that burned in the room, which flickered in the breeze and seemed likely to go out at any moment.
After a long silence, Sir Henry finally couldn't hold back his inner doubts and asked:
"Mr. Holmes, please forgive my stupidity. I really can't understand how we can lure the terrible hound and the mysterious guy behind it just by lighting candles in the room? It sounds incredible."
There was a hint of anxiety and uneasiness in his voice, and he obviously had reservations about the feasibility of this plan.
“The reason is very simple, Sir Henry,” Holmes said in a calm and steady voice, as if everything was under his control.
He paused for a moment and continued, "Since the mastermind was able to steal your shoes without anyone noticing, he must have conducted a careful inspection of the manor before doing so. He knows the layout of the manor like the back of his hand and knows exactly where the housekeeper and his wife's rooms are."
Holmes's eyes were sharp, as if he could penetrate the darkness and see the black hand hidden in the dark.
"Besides, there is a power outage right now, which is undoubtedly a great opportunity for him."
He went on to analyze,
"Because of the power outage, the light in the manor became very dim. He could easily observe when the housekeeper and his wife returned to the room. As long as he looked through the window and saw the fire in the house go out, he could be sure that they had fallen asleep."
Having said that, the corners of Holmes' mouth rose slightly, revealing a confident smile.
"So, what we have to do now is to wait patiently. Wait for that guy to confirm that the housekeeper and his wife are asleep, and then......"
Holmes had not yet finished his words when he was interrupted by the sound of breaking window glass.
coming!
Holmes and Sir Henry thought of the same thing.
.................................................. ........................
Sir Henry took a deep breath and slowly pushed open the tightly closed door. The moment the door was opened, his heartbeat suddenly accelerated, and he seemed to be able to hear his pulse beating rapidly in his ears.
Sure enough, at the end of the dim corridor, he saw the legendary ghost hound.
Its figure was looming in the darkness, emitting a strange aura, and it was rushing towards him at an alarming speed.
Under normal circumstances, Sir Henry would probably have screamed in fear at this sudden sight.
However, at this moment he was extremely calm, with only one thought in his mind - to destroy this terrible monster.
He gripped the axe tightly in his hand and swung it hard with all his strength.
The axe drew an arc in the air, with a whistling sound, and chopped straight towards the hound.
There was a dull thud as the axe hit the hound's body accurately. Then, a sharp growl was heard, which was the howl of the hound after being injured.
Sir Henry looked closely and saw blood gushing out from the hound's wound, splashing onto the floor in a pool of scarlet blood.
This scene caused an indescribable excitement to surge in Sir Henry's heart.
He knew that Miss Jenny's guess was correct - this was not a ghost hound at all, but an ordinary hound that had been coated with phosphorus powder to disguise itself as a ghost.
Just as Miss Jenny said, the so-called ghost was nothing more than a phantom woven by people's fear and imagination. And now, this phantom was shattered by his own hands.
Unfortunately, however, the axe he took out from the warehouse had lost its former sharpness after years of baptism.
When he swung the axe with all his strength, the blow that should have been fatal failed to kill the ferocious hound.
However, Sir Henry's heroic resistance made the hound feel unprecedented fear.
This fear comes from the creature's instinct, causing it to instantly lose the courage to continue attacking and turn around and flee.
"Catch up with it!!!" Seeing this, Holmes shouted without hesitation, and quickly pulled Sir Henry to chase the hound together.
This is not only because the hound is crucial as a key piece of evidence, but more importantly, they are not the only two people in the manor.
Miss Jenny and the housekeeper and his wife in the manor are also in danger, and with their strength, they may not be able to withstand such a ferocious hound.
However, fate always seems to like playing tricks on people. The more you fear something, the more likely it is to happen.
At the corner of the corridor not far away, a faint flame appeared, as if summoned from the darkness. There was no doubt that it was the oil lamp in the hand of Mrs. Barrymore, the housekeeper.
How could the middle-aged woman, whose hair was already beginning to be streaked with silver, be a match for this mad, injured hound? Her body was clearly no match for this ferocious beast.
"Run! Mrs. Barrymore! Run!" Sir Henry's shouts echoed in the corridor, full of fear and anxiety. However, this shout did not seem to have much effect, but made Mrs. Barrymore even more panicked.
The ghostly hound pounced towards Mrs. Barrymore like a flash of blue lightning.
It was moving at such a fast speed that it closed the distance between itself and Mrs. Barrymore in the blink of an eye.
Mrs. Barrymore was so frightened that she dropped the oil lamp in her hand out of fear.
She didn't even have time to pick up the oil lamp before she turned around and ran desperately, as if some terrible demon was chasing her.
Seeing this, Holmes and Sir Henry were extremely anxious. They ran desperately, trying to get to the corner of the corridor as soon as possible to save Mrs. Barrymore.
However, just when they were only a few steps away from the corner, a strange sound suddenly came - it was a canine howl of pain, as if the hound was suffering great pain.
.................................................. ........................
As they turned the corner, Holmes and Sir Henry stood in amazement. They had not expected what they saw.
Miss Jenny, who was supposed to stay in the room, unexpectedly went against their instructions and left the room without permission.
What was even more shocking was that Miss Jenny had completely lost her mind at this moment. She was extremely excited and kept muttering:
"Die, die, die! Don't come over here!"
Her voice was full of fear and despair, as if she had suffered a great shock.
Miss Jenny found a chair from somewhere, grasped the back of the chair tightly, and smashed it to the ground without hesitation.
Each collision made a dull sound, and the object that was hit was the head of the hound that was already dead.
Obviously, what happened just now was that Miss Jenny saved Mrs. Barrymore.
Although she was filled with fear, at the critical moment, she still mustered up the courage to stand up and protect Mrs. Barrymore.
"Alright, alright, alright, it's alright, Miss Jenny, open your eyes and take a look, it's dead."
Seeing this, Holmes hurried forward and tried to calm Miss Jenny.
He said softly, reaching out to grab the chair covered in blood and phosphorus powder from Miss Jenny.
Seeing Miss Jenny's face pale with fear, Sir Henry couldn't help but feel a strong desire to protect her. He raised the sharp axe in his hand without hesitation and chopped at the ferocious hound with all his strength.
With a "click" sound, the axe was deeply embedded in the hound's body. Its soul had been sucked out and it was no longer able to move.
Apparently, the hound was completely dead, and couldn't even die anymore.
“Wuwuwuwuwuwuwu….”
After confirming that she was finally safe, Miss Jenny's tense nerves seemed to suddenly break, and all the fear and terror burst out like a flood.
She burst into tears uncontrollably, and her body trembled with fear.
Miss Jenny quickly curled up in Holmes' arms like a frightened rabbit, as if only this could make her feel a little safe.
However, even though she was hugged tightly, her body was still trembling, and she obviously had not recovered from the thrilling scene just now.
Faced with such a fragile Miss Jenny, Holmes was completely at a loss.
He had never comforted anyone since he was a child, and he didn't know how to comfort a woman who was so frightened.
He could only stand there, watching Miss Jenny crying in his arms, but he didn't know what to say or do to calm her down.
(To be exact, he doesn’t know how to comfort people. This is how Holmes is in the original novel. His IQ is inversely proportional to his EQ.)
There was really no other way, and Holmes had no choice but to turn his gaze to Mrs. Barrymore, with a look full of hope and request.
Not long ago, they had just experienced a thrilling chase and were pursued by a mysterious ghost hound.
However, when they eventually discover that the so-called ghost hound is actually dead, Mrs. Barrymore quickly realizes that it was all an elaborate hoax.
It was not a ghost at all, but just an ordinary hound.
Not only that, Mrs. Barrymore was impressed by the brave Miss Jenny.
Just now, Miss Jenny stepped forward without hesitation and saved herself at all costs.
Faced with such a lifesaver, Mrs. Barrymore would naturally not be stingy with her comfort and gratitude.
"Don't worry, dear lady, everything will be fine." Mrs. Barrymore said gently, and there was a reassuring power in her voice. "Thank you, you just saved my old bones."
.................................................. ........................
Surprisingly, Miss Jenny regained her composure in such a short time. The speed was so fast that even the experienced Holmes was a little surprised.
After all, in his opinion, women are often seen as emotional and prone to crying, which sometimes does cause a lot of trouble during the investigation of a case.
However, Miss Jenny's performance completely overturned his inherent ideas.
It took her less than a minute from the initial shock to complete calmness.
Not only that, she even took the initiative to push Holmes' shoulder and urged:
"Go quickly, before the murderer gets far away."
Although Miss Jenny had tears in her eyes when she said this, her extremely determined look was not lost on Holmes.
"it is good."
