Chapter 209 The Riddle Mansion
Riddle House was originally a handsome mansion, the most spacious and imposing building for miles around.
But since a bizarre and terrible thing happened here half a century ago, Riddle Mansion has gradually been abandoned.
Today it is damp, desolate and uninhabited year-round.
However, the villagers of Little Hangleton still call this house "Riddle House", even though the Riddle family has not lived here for many years.
Frank Bryce was the Riddle family's gardener. He lived alone in a shabby cabin on the grounds of Riddle House.
Frank came back from the war with one leg so stiff that he couldn't control it, and he was extremely disgusted with crowds and noise. He has been working for the Riddle family ever since.
This job is perfect for him after he retired - it doesn't require very agile legs and feet, and it also allows him to stay away from the crowds and noises that he hates so much.
But the good times didn't last long.
At dawn one fine summer day, a maid walked into the living room and found the three members of the Riddle family dead.
The maid ran screaming down the hillside into the village, trying to wake up as many villagers as she could.
"They are all lying down with their eyes wide open! They are all cold! They are still wearing their dinner clothes!"
The police were called, and as the only living person in the Riddle House at the time, Frank was taken away by the police as a suspect.
That night, the business of the Hanged Man's Tavern in the village was particularly prosperous. It seemed that the whole village came to talk about the murder.
"Well, how should I put it," said a woman next to the bar, "Frank has participated in a cruel war. He likes to live a peaceful life, and we have no reason to-"
"So, who else has the key to the back door?" the cook of Riddle House said gruffly. "I remember that there was a spare key hanging in the gardener's cabin! No one broke in last night. Come in! The windows are not broken! Frank just needs to sneak into the big house while we are all asleep..."
The villagers exchanged glances silently.
……
Just when the situation was extremely serious for Frank, the Riddle family's autopsy report came back, turning the entire situation around.
The police had never seen a more bizarre report.A team of doctors examined the bodies and concluded that no one in the Riddle family had been harmed by poison, sharp objects, or pistols, nor had they been suffocated or strangled.
In fact, the report said in a tone of obvious confusion: All three of the Riddles appeared to be in good health—except that they were all dead.
The doctors noticed that everyone in the Riddle family had a look of horror on their faces - but as the police, who were already at a loss, said, who had ever heard of three people being frightened to death at the same time?
Since there was no evidence that the Riddles were murdered, the police had no choice but to let Frank go.
The Riddles were buried in the churchyard at Little Hangleton, and their graves were the object of curious attention for some time afterwards. To everyone's surprise and suspicion, Frank Bryce returned to his cabin in the grounds of Riddle House.
Frank didn't leave, he stayed, still being his gardener, tending the gardens for the next people who came to the Riddle House, and then working for the next family that moved in.
This lasted for half a century.
……
Frank is approaching his 75th birthday now. He is profoundly deaf and his bad leg is stiffer than before.
But when the weather is nice, people can still see him working diligently in the flower garden, even though the weeds are creeping towards him, and he can't stop them even if he wants to.
Besides, it wasn't just weeds that Frank had to deal with.
The boys in the village always liked to throw stones at the windows of Riddle House.
Frank took great pains to keep the grass smooth, but they rode their bicycles over it.
Once or twice, they broke into the old house in order to bet with each other. They knew that Frank Sr. cared for the house and grounds with all his heart, almost to the point of obsession.
So they liked to see him limping across the garden, waving his cane and shouting at them in his hoarse voice.
Whenever this happens, they feel particularly happy.
Frank, for his part, believed the boys tortured him because, like their parents and grandparents, they thought he was a murderer.
……
On this day, Riddle Mansion, which no one else had set foot in for a long time, suddenly received a group of uninvited guests.
It's an odd combination.
The leader is a wizard covered in black robes. If you get closer, you can smell a stink from him.
If there are people here who often deal with corpses, they will be able to tell that the stench on that person's body is actually corpse odor!
At his feet was a ferocious python, a huge python with large black-edged clouded leopard-like markings and a body several meters long.
Behind the man and the snake, there were two figures, one tall and one short. Looking at their respectful looks, you knew that the man in black robe in front was the master.
The tall wizard is a young man with pale skin and light blond hair.
The short one has a mouse-like face and a pointed nose. You can see that his right hand is missing an index finger.
……
At dawn in August, Frank suddenly woke up from his sleep. He was woken up by the pain in his bad leg.
Now that he is getting older, the pain in his legs is getting worse.
He got up from the bed, limped downstairs and walked into the kitchen, trying to fill a hot water bottle to warm his stiff knees.
He stood by the sink, filling the kettle, and while raising his head to look towards Riddle House, he saw the windows upstairs shimmering.
Frank immediately understood what was going on.Those boys broke into the old house again. The dim light was flickering, and it was obvious that they had made a fire.
"What new tricks did those bad guys come up with to punish me, an old man?" Frank murmured to himself.
He quickly put down the kettle, dragged his bad leg back upstairs as quickly as possible, got dressed, and immediately returned to the kitchen.
He took off the old rusty key from the hook beside the door, picked up the crutch leaning against the wall, and walked into the night.
There were no signs of forced entry at the Riddle House's front door, and the windows were intact.
Frank limped around to the back of the house, stopped at a door that was almost completely hidden by the ivy, took out the old key, inserted it into the lock, and opened the door silently.
Frank walked into the cavernous, dark kitchen, which he hadn't been in for years.
But despite the darkness, he remembered where the door to the corridor was.
He groped his way over, and a rotten smell hit his nostrils.
He strained his ears, picking up every sound of footsteps or voices overhead.
He came to the corridor, where there was a little light due to the large mullioned windows on both sides of the front door.
He started to go upstairs, thinking that thanks to the thick dust on the stone steps, the sound of his footsteps and the sound of his cane were muffled and difficult to detect.
On the landing, Frank turned to the right and immediately saw where the intruder was.
At the top of the corridor, a door was opened a crack, and a flickering light shot out from the crack, casting an orange light shadow on the dark floor.
Frank leaned sideways and approached carefully, holding the crutch tightly in his hand.A few steps from the door, he could see through a narrow crack in the room.
He saw now that the fire was in the hearth.
This surprised him.
He stopped and pricked up his ears, only to hear a man's voice coming from the room. The voice sounded timid and scared.
"...Master, I know the identity of the little wizard you are talking about."
"Huh? Tell me about him, Wormtail." Another voice sounded, his tone was calm, but Frank felt cold and biting.
Somehow the sound made the thin hair on the back of Frank's neck stand up.
"His name is Albert Stoker, and he has a very close relationship with Dumbledore and Nico Flamel..."
In the corridor outside, Frank put a rough finger into his ear and twisted it a few times. There must be too much earwax accumulation. He actually heard the word "wizard". Are these people out of their minds?
How could there be wizards in this world?
Frank only sees them as a group of delusional teenagers.
Just as the man who called himself Wormtail was talking endlessly about Albert's deeds, the cold and biting voice suddenly spoke again:
"Wormtail, stop for a moment. Barty, go drag the Muggle in at the door and feed Nagini."
"Yes, Master." A third voice sounded in the room, and Frank realized that there was a third person in the room.
The giant snake Nagini raised its ugly triangular head and let out a slight hiss.
Frank had no chance to hide. There were footsteps in the room, and then the door was opened.
There was a flash of green light, a whooshing sound, and Frank Bryce collapsed to the ground.
He was dead before he hit the ground.
Hundreds of miles away, Harry Potter jerked awake from his dream.
