The energy field fluctuated violently, and the entire tower shook again.
"Oh no! Someone has hacked into the central mainframe!" Eileen shouted.
"Who is it! Who broke in at this time?" Su Ting shouted angrily.
"I'm afraid... it's an old friend of yours." Xin Suting smiled faintly, but his eyes didn't look at anyone.
Instead, he looked into the depths of darkness, behind the massive metal door that had just appeared:
"Welcome back, Commander 02."
An unsettling sense of oppression filled the air.
A deep, unfamiliar voice came from behind the door:
"Heh...it seems I've arrived just in time, Su Ting. The game hasn't even started yet, has it?"
Su Ting turned his head and looked over, his eyes showing surprise for the first time.
Because he had never heard of the existence of "Commander 02".
The sound drifted slowly from behind the dark door, each syllable seemingly rippling through the air. Metallic footsteps echoed in the empty tower, each step like a tug on the deepest string of the heart.
Chapter 1016 You're Still Alive
A tall figure appeared at the doorway.
He was clad in heavy black armor, with intricate runes carved along the edges of his shoulder armor, and a badge that gleamed with an eerie light embedded in his chest. His face was hidden beneath a half-mask, with only his eyes exposed—eyes as cold as blades, yet carrying a certain familiarity.
"Commander 02?" Su Ting repeated the codename in a low voice, his eyes wary. "...Who are you?"
The man smiled slightly, his voice deep and magnetic: "You don't remember me? Heh... that's normal."
He raised his hand and removed his mask, revealing a face with sharp features and the marks of time on his brows.
Chu Mo's pupils shrank instantly: "You...it's you! How is this possible...weren't you there when the Zero Boundary collapsed..."
Li Yuanhang frowned and stared at the other person: "Lin Su? You're still alive?!"
The name was like a boulder dropped into stagnant water, creating countless ripples.
Su Ting's heart suddenly raced.
He certainly remembered Lin Su—he was one of the original core commanders of Project Zero and a senior member of their five-person team.
According to all the remaining files, he sacrificed himself on the front line in order to seal the main brain during the early stages of the system's rampage.
"I didn't die." Lin Su's lips curled into a cold smile. "I was simply abandoned by your choices."
Chu Mo glared at him angrily: "We didn't abandon anyone! The system went mad! We risked everything to preserve your data remnants! You...you're not Lin Su anymore! What are you anyway?"
Xin Suting sighed softly, his tone gentle: "Chu Mo, don't be so quick to deny him. He did exist once."
"You know him?" Su Ting looked at the new Su Ting.
Xin Suting nodded: "Of course. He was 'Commander 02,' my earliest collaborator. He was also the first person to teach me the meaning of the word 'responsibility.'"
Lin Su walked step by step to the center of the crowd, his gaze falling on Su Ting.
"Su Ting, you are the last person who should forget me."
Su Ting's breath hitched, his voice hoarse: "What did you say?"
“You forgot, before the last system reboot, we entered the simulation room together.” Lin Su looked directly into his eyes. “You said something to me—if you wake up and find me gone, remember, it was I who volunteered to become the anchor point so that you could live.”
Su Ting's face turned deathly pale in an instant, and his fingers trembled slightly.
That scene flashed through my mind:
Inside the laboratory, lights flickered, and the air was thick with the scorching smell of electricity. He slumped against the control panel, utterly exhausted. The man standing before the terminal, however, stood tall and resolute…
His voice rang out clearly: "Don't be afraid... I'm just going to find you a way back."
That was the last memory he could recall.
“You couldn’t possibly know these things…” Su Ting’s voice was almost inaudible, “because it’s not publicly recorded.”
Lin Su smiled slightly, but his eyes were devoid of warmth.
“I am the part of you that is buried deepest. I am the history that has been erased. But if you want to find the real truth now, you can no longer avoid all the costs of the past.”
Su Ting sneered, "It sounds like you're criticizing our decisions back then? Then tell me, what are you doing? Who are you now? A remnant of the system? Or another parasite?"
Lin Su slowly raised one hand, and a red data core appeared in his palm—it was not an ordinary data module, but a fragment of the "first generation control key".
Chapter 1017 The Real Reconstruction
“This is what I left behind,” he said. “It carries the first phase of the blueprint that Su Ting and I built together. You thought you shut down the system, but you actually locked everything in an eternally looping timeline. And I’ve been trapped in that for far too long.”
He turned to look at New Sutin: "You think you can accomplish the true reconstruction? No, you need me. Because you are not the original 'source,' but merely... its mirror image."
The new Sutin's gaze finally changed.
He gazed at Lin Su silently, a flicker of uncertainty appearing in his eyes for the first time.
“You know… how I came to be,” he said.
“Yes.” Lin Su nodded slowly. “The moment you were born was not a day of victory for the laboratory, but the prelude to failure.”
He looked around at everyone, his tone calm but heavy.
"You want to rebuild Zero Boundary? Then you must confront the initial mistake. And that mistake... was made by ourselves."
The air inside the tower solidified again.
Su Ting clenched his fists, forcing himself to calm down.
"So, what do you want us to do?" he asked.
Lin Su slowly turned around and looked at the huge metal door behind him that was opening.
"Come in with me and see clearly that buried timeline. You will discover... why Su Ting has become the way he is now, and you will also see... why I came back."
After he finished speaking, he extended his hand, as if waiting for their trust.
"Coming?"
There was silence.
Xin Suting looked at him, and for the first time, a wavering appeared in his eyes.
Su Ting remained silent for a moment before finally taking a step forward.
Just as he was about to reach out and touch the light—
"Wait!" a voice suddenly rang out.
Everyone turned around at the same time.
Eileen was pale, clutching a broken data link in her hand that was emitting an eerie red light.
"Something's not right... This isn't the structure the Tower of Memory should have. We're entering... not the initial node."
He gritted his teeth and whispered, "This is a fake entrance. Someone is manipulating what we see!"
Lin Su's smile remained unchanged, and even appeared more gentle.
"You finally noticed?"
He waved his right hand lightly.
boom!
The entire tower shook violently.
A dazzling red light shot into the sky from the ground.
And then the door burst open.
A whole new world is unfolding—
"Come on, let's play an even more fun game together."
Lin Su's voice echoed in my ears.
Welcome home, children.
Outside the door lay a burning ruin.
And countless upside-down, floating city silhouettes.
Su Ting's steps faltered in mid-air.
He instinctively took a step back, his gaze fixed on the slowly opening door. A wave of heat, mixed with a pungent odor, rushed towards him, the air thick with the smell of burnt metal and the hallucination of blood—like the final cry of a forgotten world from his memory.
"A disguised entrance?" Chu Mo repeated in a low voice, his fingers unconsciously reaching for the pistol at his waist. "Who's controlling us?"
Lin Su stood quietly in the red light, his smile unchanged: "You asked the wrong question, Commander. The question is, 'Who are you?'"
As soon as those words were spoken, the light inside the entire tower suddenly changed.
The ceiling and walls seemed like a curtain being lifted, revealing the naked flow of data beneath. Everyone was instantly surrounded by countless data threads, like moths trapped in a cocoon.
"We're... inside the data core?" Su Ting's voice was a little tense. "But we just entered the physical structure tower."
