Meanwhile, more gasps of alarm rose from the crowd: "Look! Those red eyes...it's terrifying!" Several timid individuals huddled together, seemingly wanting to disappear into the ground. "Don't panic!" a brave middle-aged man stepped forward to reassure the others. "We must trust Mr. Su Ting's abilities. If even he can't solve this problem, then perhaps no one can."
Chapter 824 The True Display of Strength
Chapter 824 The True Display of Strength
The archer stood at the very back of the column, arrows ready to be fired at the perfect moment. "Don't worry," he said to his nervous younger brother beside him, "whatever awaits ahead, as long as I have a breath left, I will not let it harm an innocent person." The latter nodded vigorously, as if drawing courage from his hero.
Just as everyone held their breath, the colossal creature finally revealed itself completely before them—an unknown being with a body tens of meters tall, limbs as thick as pillars, and skin a deep black hue. Its fiery red eyes were fixed on Su Ting and the others, and an indescribable aura of danger filled the air. "Wow!" a voice exclaimed from the onlookers, "I've never seen anything so big before, it's like a giant beast from a myth!" Several screams followed, but most people remained silent, watching the impending battle with awe and curiosity.
Seeing this, the woman quickly handed the little girl over to a relatively safe place nearby and immediately joined the front-line defense. "Get your weapons ready, we'll fight side by side," she said to Su Ting, drawing her longsword from her waist.
“Very well, then let’s make a lasting impression on this guy!” Su Ting agreed, raising the stone slab above his head. Instantly, a dazzling light burst forth from the slab, standing out starkly in the darkness. This not only attracted the monster’s attention but also drew gasps and exclamations of admiration from the surrounding audience. “Is this a divine artifact? It’s truly amazing!”
Just when everyone thought a fierce battle was about to unfold, something unexpected happened. The giant beast, which had been charging menacingly towards the humans, suddenly stopped and took a small step back after sensing the light. This change shocked everyone. "Is it scared?" A little girl's innocent voice broke the silence, sparking an even more heated discussion among the other children and adults.
But soon, the behemoth moved forward again, letting out a deafening roar. It raised its massive foot and slammed it directly towards Su Ting's location. "Watch out!" the woman shouted, immediately rushing forward to block it. However, just as the point of contact was about to occur, the stone slab in Su Ting's hand suddenly released a powerful shockwave, directly repelling the attacker and simultaneously forming an invisible shield that protected the two from harm.
This scene filled all the spectators with immense excitement:
"That's fantastic! I didn't expect it to actually hold up!"
"I knew I was right, this is the real display of strength!"
Just as everyone was immersed in the excitement, an old man slowly walked into the crowd and said, "In fact, according to legend, this stone slab is an object left behind by an ancient civilization to protect peace. Perhaps now is the time when it needs to play its role."
Upon hearing this, the previously hesitant soldiers immediately became spirited and raised their weapons in response to the call. "In that case, let's go help!" one of the young men spoke up on behalf of everyone. Seeing this, Su Ting smiled with relief. "Thank you all. With everyone's support, I have even more confidence to overcome the current difficulties."

Chapter 825 Immediately Close the City Gates
However, at that moment, a sudden change occurred. The monster, which had previously appeared to be severely injured, began to transform! Its form became increasingly blurred until it materialized into several smaller but still extremely terrifying beings that attacked them. Looking at these unexpected new enemies, everyone's expressions turned grave…
The archer's figure quickly disappeared behind the crowd, leaving only the burning fire arrow drawing a bright arc in the darkness. Su Ting led the remaining men in a rapid retreat towards the city outskirts, amidst a cacophony of screams and running sounds.
"Keep up close, don't fall behind!" Su Ting shouted back, while keeping an eye on the elderly and children in the crowd who were walking with difficulty.
A boy of about ten years old suddenly tripped over a stone, fell to the ground, and screamed. Su Ting immediately turned back and picked the boy up.
"Are you alright?"
The boy shook his head, tears welling in his eyes, but he held back from crying.
"I can walk on my own."
Su Ting glanced at the boy's scraped knee, said nothing, and simply carried him on his back. "Hold on tight."
The alarm bells on the city wall rang more and more urgently, and the roars of monsters echoed in the distance. The sounds resembled those of some large, ferocious beast, yet were mixed with eerie tones that did not belong to any known creature.
"Have they breached the city walls?" someone in the crowd asked in alarm.
"Don't look back, keep going!" Su Ting shouted sharply. "The East Gate is just ahead, we're almost there!"
Outside the east gate was an open area, beyond which lay a dense forest. If they could enter the forest, they could at least temporarily escape the monsters' pursuit.
Just then, a loud crash came from behind, shaking the ground. Su Ting turned around and saw a section of the city wall collapse with a roar. Amidst the billowing dust, dozens of dark figures poured in through the breach.
"Run!"
Panic erupted in the crowd, who shoved and surged forward. Su Ting, carrying the boy on his back, quickened his pace while trying to maintain order.
"We've arrived at the East Gate!" someone shouted.
However, when they arrived at the city gate, they found it tightly closed, and several guards were anxiously turning the winch.
"What happened?" Su Ting asked.
"The mechanism is stuck!" a guard replied, sweating profusely. "We're trying to fix it!"
Su Ting put the boy down and handed him to a woman nearby, then stepped forward. "Let me try."
He inspected the winch's structure and found a piece of gravel stuck between the gears. Su Ting drew a dagger from his waist and carefully pried the gravel out.
“Try it now!”
Several guards worked together to push the winch, and the heavy city gate finally began to slowly rise.
"Everyone prepare to proceed!" Su Ting shouted. "The elderly and children go first!"
Just then, a series of hurried footsteps came from behind. Su Ting turned around alertly and saw the archer rushing towards him, followed closely by several wolf-like but larger monsters whose eyes gleamed with an eerie green light in the darkness.
"Open the door! Open the door now!" the archer shouted.
The city gates had been raised to a height through which people could pass, and the crowd began to pour out of the city. Su Ting drew his longsword and stood at the very back.
"Are you alright?" he asked the archer.
"Still alive for now." The archer panted, glancing back at the pursuers. "But there are too many of them. We need to get out of here quickly."
Su Ting nodded and said to the guards, "Close the city gates immediately after everyone has left."
"And what about you?" the guard asked.
"We'll figure something out."

The archer took the last few arrows from his quiver and nocked them on his bow. "I'm almost out of arrows."
"Use it sparingly," Su Ting said. "We'll leave once everyone has left."
On the open ground outside the city gate, the crowd was rushing towards the forest. Su Ting noticed that several figures had begun to organize the crowd, guiding everyone to evacuate along a predetermined route.
“It seems someone knows what to do,” the archer said.
“Those are hunters from the town; they know the forest paths well,” Su Ting replied.
The monsters drew closer, and the ferocious face of the one in front could now be clearly seen—it resembled a wolf but was not entirely a wolf. Something seemed to be wriggling beneath its skin, like countless worms crawling through its flesh.
"What is that?" the archer asked, frowning.
"I don't know, but it's clearly not something good." Su Ting gripped the hilt of his sword tightly. "Ready?"
The archer nodded and drew his bowstring taut. "Anytime."
"The last person has gone out!" the guard shouted.
"Close the gate!" Su Ting ordered, and at the same time, he and the archers rushed towards the city gate.
The city gate began to descend, and Su Ting and the archers rolled out at the last moment before it closed. The guards immediately lowered the bolts and locked the gate securely.
Outside the city gate, the two quickly got up and joined the group retreating into the forest.
"My name is Su Ting," Su Ting said as he ran.
“Lin Jian,” the archer replied curtly, “It’s a pleasure to meet you, though the timing isn’t ideal.”
“It’s not ideal,” Su Ting smiled, “but it’s better than never having the chance to meet at all.”
The two quickly caught up with the rear of the group. The outline of the forest ahead was now clearly visible, and the dense shadows of the trees in the darkness seemed to represent temporary safety.
However, just as they were about to enter the forest, a loud crash came from behind them. Turning around, they saw that the east gate had been smashed open a crack, and several monster claws reached out from the gap, trying to push the gate open completely.
"They're coming out!" someone shouted in terror.
"Everyone, get into the forest!" Su Ting shouted. "Don't stop, keep moving forward!"
Lin Jian nocked his last arrow and aimed it at the gap in the city gate. "This is my last arrow."
“Save your courage,” Su Ting patted him on the shoulder. “What we need now is speed, not courage.”
Lin Jian hesitated for a moment, then finally put away his bow and arrows. The two turned and rushed into the shadows of the forest.
The forest paths meandered and twisted, sometimes branching out and sometimes merging. Without a hunter guiding them, they would likely have lost their way in this dense forest.
"Where are we going?" Lin Jian asked.
“As far as I know, there’s a small village on the other side of the forest called Qing Shi Village,” Su Ting replied. “If we can get there, we can at least settle down temporarily.”
Do you think those monsters will come after us?
"I don't know, but it's best to be prepared."
The two followed the group through the forest. Moonlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground. The surrounding sounds gradually quieted down, leaving only the sound of footsteps and occasional whispers.
After walking for about two hours, the group stopped. A middle-aged man who looked like a hunter walked to the front and gestured for everyone to rest.
“We’ve made it out of the danger zone,” he said. “We can rest here for a bit, but we must reach Qingshi Village before dawn.”

People sat down, some leaning against tree trunks, others lying directly on the ground. Su Ting found a relatively flat spot to sit down, and Lin Jian sat down next to him.
"Where are you from?" Su Ting asked.
"The mountainous areas in the north," Lin Jian replied. "And you?"
