Chapter 23 Patronus Curse
"Professor Flitwick, please wait a moment, I have something I'd like to ask you."
After Charms class ended, Flitwick heard someone call his name. Looking down from the high platform, he saw Jerry and asked, "Mr. Green, is there a problem?"
"Professor, I recently discovered a dark magical creature called a Dementor in the book 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.' The book says that only the Patronus Charm can banish it, but I haven't found this spell in the library yet, so I would like to ask you about it."
"Ah, it's the Guardian Charm. That's a very high-level spell. It's normal that you're only a first-year student and can't access it. How about this, come to my office after you finish your meal. It's on the eighth floor of the West Tower. We can sit down and talk slowly."
Jerry was pleasantly surprised to hear Professor Flitwick's words and quickly thanked him. He liked professors who liked to give their students extra help.
“Outstanding students always receive special treatment, Mr. Green. I’ll be waiting for you in my office.” With that, he left the classroom.
Jerry didn't linger and ran all the way to the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall, where he sat down next to Hermione.
Hermione noticed Jerry wolfing down his food as soon as he sat down and asked curiously, "Jerry, I saw you go to Professor Flitwick as soon as get out of class was over. Is something wrong?"
Three days have passed since Potions class, and both Jerry and Hermione have tacitly avoided mentioning it again. Jerry and Hermione seem to have returned to normal, but neither of them has noticed that their relationship seems to have undergone some subtle changes.
"Nothing much, just asking Professor Flitwick about some Patronus Charms," Jerry replied to Hermione's question while eating.
Hermione asked, "Is it a spell to banish Dementors?"
Jerry gave her a thumbs up. "Look, this is a top student!" he exclaimed. "The moment I mentioned a spell, she knew what it was for. Unlike the Harry trio across from us, who just stared blankly at the two of them, not knowing what they were talking about."
"Great! Jerry, do you know this spell? Can you teach me?"
"Ahem, I'm going to Professor Flitwick's office later. Let me learn first, and I'll teach you if I can."
Seeing Jerry eating so fast, Hermione couldn't help but pat him on the back, then handed him a glass of fresh pumpkin juice, saying with concern, "Jerry, eat slowly, don't choke."
After finishing his pumpkin juice, Jerry said goodbye to Hermione: "I'm off now, see you in flight class this afternoon. Oh, by the way, if Tom asks you for food, just give him some water, don't give him anything else, I'm helping him lose weight."
Hermione nodded in agreement.
"Boom, boom, boom!"
Professor Flitwick's office is on the eighth floor of the West Tower.
"Please come in!"
"Professor Flitwick, I've arrived!"
"Mr. Green, please have a seat. Would you like some juice?"
Jerry shook his head and replied, "No, Professor, I just finished a big glass of pumpkin juice."
Professor Flitwick: "Well, Mr. Green, you want to learn the Patronus Charm, is that right? That's a very advanced spell. I need to test you first to see if you have the ability to learn it."
After saying that, Professor Flitwick waved his wand, and a practice dummy appeared in his office.
“Don’t be shy, Mr. Green. Show me the spells you know. I want to see how well you have mastered the others.”
Jerry nodded, raised his wand at the dummy, and began casting spells from the system list, one by one, according to the spells he knew.
"Fluorescence"
"Yugadimulle Vioosa"
"Flying around"
"All petrified"
……
"shattered to pieces"
"Blazing Flames"
"Completely cleaned and refreshed"
……
More than half an hour later, after Jerry had demonstrated all the spells he knew, he turned to look at Professor Flitwick.
Flitwick stared at Jerry in shock. Holy crap, this young man!
"Mr. Green, are you... are you raised in a wizarding family? When did you start learning magic?"
“No, Professor Flitwick, I grew up in an orphanage, and I learned most of my magic on my own during the summer when I was bored.”
Flitwick wiped the fine sweat from his brow, patted his chest, and looked relieved and relaxed. He thought to himself, "Luckily, you asked me about the Patronus Charm, not some weird black magic."
“Mr. Green, I’ve noticed that you are not only exceptionally talented, but also so passionate about learning. Almost every time I come to the library, I see you engrossed in your studies. It’s truly a pity about the Sorting Hat’s decision; it should have placed you in Ravenclaw, not Slytherin.”
Jerry nodded in agreement with Flitwick.
"Alright, Mr. Green, you have passed my test. If you would like to learn the Patronus Charm, I can teach you."
"The Patronus Charm is a very powerful magic that can protect yourself and others from harm. First, we need to relax our body and mind. When the mind is relaxed, our thinking becomes clearer."
"Then, try your best to recall a happy or hopeful event. Next, we need to use a spell to summon our guardian spirit. Remember the spell: Expecto Patronum."
“Come on, Mr. Green, try doing it the way I say.”
"Hoo~" Jerry took a deep breath, straightened his body, gripped his wand tightly, and stared intently at the Dementor phantom created by Flitwick's magic in front of him. He loudly recited the incantation of the Patronus Charm: Expecto Patronum.
Jerry felt his heartbeat synchronize with the rhythm of the wand, which drew a semicircle in the air, as if drawing an invisible shield to protect him and everything around him.
The tip of the wand shimmered with a bright light, forming a dynamic halo. The halo soared into the air, transforming into a majestic raven, noble and dignified, like a mythical beast from ancient mythology. The Dementor, under this intense light, turned into a wisp of smoke and vanished into the air.
"It worked!" Jerry exclaimed excitedly, looking at the raven in front of him. Its entire body was a semi-transparent gray, but its eyes shone like red gems, mysterious and captivating like a ghost wandering in the mist.
Seeing Jerry succeed, Flitwick clapped happily and then said, "Mr. Green, although I have praised you many times, I must emphasize again that your talent is truly extraordinary."
"In all these years, I have never seen anyone succeed in summoning a Patronus Charm on their first attempt. You may now be the youngest wizard to ever cast a Patronus Charm."
Chapter 24 The Strange Guardian
Jerry looked at himself in the mirror, then at the guardian spirit standing above his head, and gave him a strange look.
Most wizards' patron saints are related to things they deeply love. For example, Severus Snape's patron saint is a doe because he loves Lily; Nymphadora Tonks' patron saint is a wolf because she loves Lupin.
Do I really like Tom that much?
Looking into the raven's blood-red eyes, Jerry felt a chill run down his spine. He couldn't understand why the Guardian Angel Charm, a perfectly legitimate spell, summoned a guardian angel with such terrifying eyes.
Professor Flitwick was also carefully observing Jerry's Patronus's eyes, and he too felt something was amiss.
Flitwick had never seen a Guardian with such frightening eyes, which made him feel uneasy.
However, after some discussion, he and Jerry still couldn't reach any conclusion. Finally, Professor Flitwick speculated that this might be due to Jerry's talent.
After all, Jerry succeeded on his first attempt at casting the Patronus Charm, which surpassed that of many older wizards.
"Professor Flitwick, what would be summoned if a Patronus Charm were cast with malice?"
Upon hearing Jerry's words, Professor Flitwick did not answer directly. Instead, he smiled and turned to Jerry, asking, "Jerry, what do you think magic is?"
Jerry thought for a moment and said, "Professor Flitwick, my understanding of magic is a mysterious power that can grant people's wishes."
"Whether it's transfiguration or other magic, wizards use their wands to wield and use this power, changing the things around them at will. Spells are like wizards telling their wishes to mysterious forces in order to get the desired results."
Professor Flitwick's eyes lit up with deep admiration upon hearing Jerry's answer. He exclaimed, "A truly wonderful analogy, and so apt. That's why no one can cast the Patronus Charm with malice, because it goes against your 'wish'."
Jerry nodded, explaining that the same principle applies to the need for wizards to harbor extreme malice when casting black magic.
……
Although he ultimately failed to figure out the problem with the Raven Guardian's eyes, Jerry still gained a lot from the trip. After opening the system panel, the spell bar already showed: Guardian Charm Lv1, 37.6%. With a teacher guiding him, progress is fast; he'll probably level up after a few more practices.
After leaving Professor Flitwick's office, Jerry didn't return to his dormitory but went straight to the lawn outside Hogwarts Castle. Hermione, Harry, and the other two were already waiting there.
Since last week, Harry and Ron have been talking to Jerry about how they eagerly anticipate flying through the sky on a broomstick.
However, to be honest, Jerry wasn't very interested in flying brooms, which weren't exactly comfortable flying devices. He wondered why wizards, who possessed such amazing magic, had so few forms of entertainment; it seemed that apart from the dangerous sport of Quidditch, there were no other activities.
"Jerry, you're back! How's your studies with Professor Flitwick going?"
Jerry replied confidently, "Hermione, are you questioning my talent?"
Hearing Jerry's words, Hermione got excited and grabbed Jerry's hand, saying, "Have you learned it yet? Let me see!"
"I'll show you one night, with special effects."
Harry, Ron, and Neville all thought Jerry and Hermione were terrifying; they had already finished class but still had to go to the professor for extra lessons—they were just too much trouble.
……
A few people sat on the grass and chatted for a while, and then the Slytherin students arrived one after another, including Malfoy.
Perhaps seeing Jerry sitting there, Malfoy didn't go up to provoke Potter, but instead boasted to his companions about how he scared Muggle helicopters while riding a flying broom.
Upon hearing Malfoy's words, the students from wizarding families around him began sharing their childhood experiences riding flying broomsticks. Even Ron couldn't resist boasting that he had almost crashed into a Muggle glider.
Harry listened to the people around him and showed a longing expression, beginning to imagine what it would feel like to fly in the sky.
Hermione and Neville were a little worried about their flying lessons, since they had never tried such an adventure before.
Jerry, on the other hand, was completely fearless. He had immense confidence in his powerful talent and now felt like he was invincible.
The students around were discussing flying broomsticks and Quidditch enthusiastically, and some even started arguing about their different views on Quidditch and Muggle football.
The wizarding children thought football was uninteresting because it only involved a ball that couldn't fly, while the Muggle students thought Quidditch wasn't a sport at all, but rather a death game.
"Jerry, Harry, have you both ever ridden a flying broomstick?" Hermione asked the two with some concern, listening to the chaotic discussion around them.
Jerry shook his head and said to Hermione, "No, and I hate riding flying brooms too."
Unlike Jerry, Harry was full of anticipation for being able to fly on a broomstick and participate in Quidditch matches.
Ron said, "You don't understand. Riding a flying broomstick and representing the school in Quidditch is something I've always dreamed of. It's just a pity that freshmen aren't allowed to participate in Quidditch, otherwise I would definitely sign up."
"What are you all doing? Stand up straight now, class is starting!" A stern voice interrupted the conversation.
When everyone turned around, they saw that it was their flight instructor, Ms. Huo Qi.
"Alright, now please stand in two rows, place a flying broom next to your feet, and listen carefully to my commands. Hurry up, make the most of the time."
Soon, the students stood in their places as Ms. Huo Qi had instructed, with a flying broom placed next to each of them.
