Chapter 80 Where is my armor?
Almost everyone was in disbelief.
The room in front of them was a truly impregnable fortress, capable of withstanding even artillery bombardment.
And so this alien just walked out so casually?
Superman's unhurried pace, as if he were strolling in a garden, was particularly striking. The scene was so impactful that it seemed as if a series of jaw-slapping sounds echoed in the room.
The researcher at the control panel remained rooted to the spot, his hand hovering over the button. When he noticed Superman's gaze sweeping over him, he shuddered, shrank back, and quickly stood up, making room for the chair behind him.
"Please sit down, please sit down," the researcher said with a broad smile, sweat beading on his forehead.
Superman smiled slightly at him, thinking to himself that he was indeed a researcher, much more polite than this so-called general.
Of course, it's also true that it's hard for someone to be impolite when facing Superman.
"Thank you, but no need, please have a seat."
Superman said politely, then turned to General Ryan and said gently.
“Like I said, I just want to talk. I am indeed from outer space, but I grew up on Earth. I just want to do good.”
"Do good deeds, please."
General Ryan, though also shocked by Superman's monstrous performance, looked him straight in the eye without fear. He casually grabbed a newspaper and slammed it on the table.
"So you approached my daughter also to 'do good'?"
A copy of the Daily Planet features an exclusive report on Lois Lane with the headline, "Meet Metropolis's new savior, 'Superman'!"
"Uh, Miss Ryan and I have more in common, that's all." Superman scratched his head.
The farm boy sounded a little guilty about this, because he had indeed paid a tiny bit of attention to the girl.
"Common language? What common language could an alien possibly have with my daughter? What do you want from her?"
Superman squinted, and the smile disappeared from his face.
“I’m sorry, General, I’ve said I’m here to talk, not to be interrogated. I thought we could understand each other. It seems I’d better leave.”
As he spoke, he began to walk outside.
General Ryan roared, "If you leave here, you will be considered an enemy of this country!"
Superman paused, then slowly turned his head.
The soldiers whose gaze swept over them all shuddered. American soldiers were notoriously undisciplined, and some of the more timid ones nearly dropped their guns. Some even cast pleading glances at the general, essentially saying, "Brother, please, please. If you want to die, just do it yourself. Who's going to clean up our corpses if we all go down with you?"
To be fair, the general's courage in not fearing a powerful punch is commendable, but his actions are indeed perplexing. As an Earth general, it's not unreasonable for him to defend against Superman single-handedly based on the principle of "those who are not of our kind must have different hearts."
However, acting covertly is one thing, while openly provoking someone is quite another. To taunt them face-to-face within a few steps feels like a three-year-old threatening a UFC champion with a bubble gun. The other person's nonchalance stems from a magnanimous attitude of "it's the New Year" or "he's just a child," while the man smugly assumes the other person has backed down.
Fortunately, Da Chao had a good temper and didn't say anything more before turning around and leaving.
Everyone in the room breathed a sigh of relief.
"Oh my god, I thought he was going to..." someone muttered.
"I thought so too."
The researcher, pale-faced, said, "Did you see him break through that wall and come out? Good heavens, that's a bomb-proof structure. He broke through it more easily than I ever did to my wife back then."
Everyone was so engrossed in facing the pressure from Superman that they seemed oblivious to the oddity of his words.
General Ryan said grimly, "Superman's actions just now are tantamount to a declaration of war against us. Notify all departments to prepare for battle."
The researchers behind them turned pale instantly.
The look in his eyes as he looked at the general seemed to say, "Seriously, officer? You're doing it again?"
The person had finally decided to let bygones be bygones and was about to leave, but it turns out the general was determined to say, "You won't leave until you kill me today," right?
"Security Area 9 is now open. Tell John Coburn to prepare," General Lane said in a deep voice. "Let's see how this alien performs against the Zero armor."
However, a moment later, a man in a white coat came running over.
"General!"
The doctor in the white coat was flushed and struggling to breathe.
"The armor... the Zero armor is gone!"
General Ryan's eyes widened in disbelief.
"Are you kidding me?" the general roared. "Isn't the armored vehicle in 'Sector Nine'?"
Sector 9 is the highest-level, top-secret restricted area within this base, with only one direct elevator serving as its entrance and exit. Furthermore, that elevator can only be activated with authorization from General Ryan himself.
"And it's not just the Zero armor." The doctor in the white coat was covered in sweat.
General Ryan's heart skipped a beat. He pushed aside his white coat and hurriedly walked toward District 9.
Identity verification passed, elevator unlocked. He took the elevator down to the ground floor and entered the dark warehouse.
The lights came on, illuminating the entire room in white. General Ryan looked around, his pupils contracted, and he nearly suffered a cardiac arrest.
The enormous warehouse, where General Ryan had collected countless alien artifacts over the years, had been emptied by the unseen forces, leaving it more than half empty.
A large area of the factory was empty, and it seemed as if crows were flying overhead, cawing mockingly.
General Ryan's blood pressure spiked, and he almost fainted.
He probably never dreamed that one day his base would be robbed.
"Where are my things?" he roared. "Where did all my stuff go?!"
Everything else is one thing, but what about the Zero armor? How could such a massive suit of armor just disappear like that?!
"We retrieved the surveillance footage."
A man in a white coat, sweating profusely, handed General Ryan a tablet displaying surveillance footage.
"There were no direct CCTV cameras in the vicinity of District 9 that captured the intruder. However, we compared CCTV footage from other areas and searched for all individuals who might have gone to District 9. We then used the time of the theft to eliminate possibilities, and finally discovered..."
General Ryan squinted at the surveillance screen, where a person was seen walking through the monitored corridor.
He paused the playback, locked onto the face, and quickly performed facial recognition.
Mike Williams, a senior agent of the Sky Eye Society.
General Ryan's pupils contracted.
"That agent!" he shouted. "Where did that Sky Eye agent go?"
"He seems to have left a long time ago."
"Go after him! Go catch up with him and bring him back to me!"
The trusted officer beside him hurriedly went upstairs.
But General Ryan had a vague feeling that it was probably impossible to catch them.
In an instant, he suddenly understood.
All that talk about countering Superman and sharing information is fake, it's all a smokescreen! This group came prepared from the start.
It turns out their initial target was the alien technology in District 9!
Although it was a bit outrageous, upon closer reflection, he actually felt that it did somewhat fit the behavior of the rogues at Tianyan.
General Ryan clenched his fists and gritted his teeth.
"Waller!"
At that very moment, Amanda Waller, a plump, dark-skinned woman far away at the Tianyan headquarters, sneezed again.
He then rubbed his nose in a daze.
It's strange, lately I keep feeling like someone's thinking about me.
Chapter 81 I caught you
The metropolis, the next morning.
A new day begins with the same fast pace of life. People hurry along their busy journeys, the city's hustle and bustle never ceasing. Warm sunlight spills into the forest of iron and glass. From above, the passing vehicles resemble a gently flowing river, and the bustling intersections emit a cacophony of horns.
Clark Kent, dressed in a suit and tie, bought a cup of coffee from a street cart and waved good morning with a smile as he passed an old man's newsstand. A taxi honked its horn behind him, and the driver leaned out and yelled, "Can't you see where you're going?" Startled, Clark Kent's hand trembled, and the coffee he had just taken a sip of fell to the ground.
7:55. With only five minutes left before work, Clark rushed into the Daily Planet office, only to have his suitcase jammed by the automatic door. The lid opened, and the contents spilled all over the floor.
She frantically stuffed documents, lunch, apples, and photos of her father at the Kansas farm into her suitcase and rushed toward the elevator in the lobby, which was about to close. Unfortunately, she stepped in a puddle on the floor and lost her balance, sliding forward helplessly. Just as the elevator doors were closing, her nose slammed into the cold elevator door.
He hurriedly got up and pressed the elevator button again, but the briefcase snapped open with a click from the impact. Its contents spilled all over the floor again. The young reporter scrambled down to pick it up, seemingly oblivious to the fact that his poor apple had rolled a considerable distance from his feet and was casually picked up and stuffed into the pocket of a passing cleaner.
Several ladies in the hall chuckled at his Chaplin-like comical appearance. Clark picked up his small suitcase, adjusted his glasses, scratched his head sheepishly, and waved to the ladies in a憨厚 (honest and simple) manner.
Kara remained silent for a long time after witnessing this scene.
"I'm starting to understand why a pair of glasses can make people not recognize that Carl is Superman."
“Me too.” Shen You nodded, arms crossed.
While the glasses certainly contributed to Superman's secret identity disguise, his acting skills played a significant role as well. He portrayed Clark Kent, a country bumpkin who was clumsy, prone to getting bitten by dogs and hit by cars, in a way that resonated deeply with audiences, making him completely different from Superman in terms of temperament.
It's actually quite understandable that people wouldn't recognize that these two are the same person.
At noon, they finally sat down at a table.
"Ah!? You're that...that one."
Clark stared wide-eyed at Shen You in disbelief.
"My God, I only saw that you had enormous energy, but I never imagined that you were actually 'Ultraman'?"
"Yes, yes, I told you, Shen You is amazing!" Kara said with admiration.
“I’ve heard about it too.” Clark’s eyes seemed to sparkle as he looked at Shen You. “It started with that starfish incident, right? That super-sized alien invader.”
And then there was that dream! You actually managed to enter a dream? You saved them all from an endless nightmare, and more importantly, you inspired them all.
Then there was the tsunami. I watched the video on YouTube, and I saw you push the tsunami back. I used to think I was invincible.
"Uh, thank you."
