Chapter 4 Teacher Liu
Liu Yifei was wearing a beggar's costume. I was curiously looking at her, and I found it quite novel. This was the first time that the film had been shot entirely on a green screen, as it had always been filmed on location before.

Hearing the call, she ran over with light steps, a sweet smile on her lips, her childlike voice clear and crisp: "Director, what can I do for you?"

"I need your help. We need someone to stand in the shooting area to test the lighting effects." Wang Peter smiled. He quite liked this girl; she was lively and cheerful on set and very likable.

"Sure," Liu Yifei readily agreed.

"Then you just stand in that area and listen to his instructions." Peter Wang pointed to the filming area surrounded by lights, and then pointed to Qin Xuan.

"Okay." Liu Yifei nodded.

Qin Xuan was staring at Liu Yifei. She was still very young, pure and delicate like a young girl, with clear eyes and a youthful vitality in her speech and behavior, unlike the plump and voluptuous woman she would become later.

It's completely different from what I remembered!

Liu Yifei looked at the person and waved her hand in front of him: "Hey, hello."

"Hello." Qin Xuan snapped out of his daze.

"Shall we begin?" Liu Yifei asked, her eyes bright.

This energy was infectious, even to the old man Qin Xuan, who gestured, "Come with me."

Liu Yifei followed him to the cherry blossom forest, but the cherry blossom forest was fake, just a prop. It would be difficult to find cherry blossoms in full bloom at this time of year.

The green screen background is a landscape, which requires post-production.

Therefore, the lighting and shadows not only need to make the actors look realistic, but also need to create shadow effects in the cherry blossom forest.

"Teacher Liu, just stand here. The spotlight might be a bit strong when it turns on, but don't be afraid, you'll get used to it," Qin Xuan explained to her.

"Don't worry, I'm not afraid of that." Liu Yifei waved her hand; she was used to being in the spotlight.

Then stand in the designated spot, legs together, arms hanging at your sides: "Is this right?"

"Yes, very good!" Seeing her amused expression, Qin Xuan's tense expression relaxed, and a smile appeared on his lips.

He went back to the lighting control panel, where there was a high-precision monitor and an oscilloscope, which were specifically used to monitor the screen data and determine the colors.

Peter Wang and Dexi Bao were watching over the scene, and the setup and installation were completed in an hour.

"Don't turn on the green screen lights yet. Only turn on the main lights and see if the actors' shadows fall on the green screen," Qin Xuan said.

The main lighting was on the shooting area, specifically where Liu Yifei was.

Peter Wang nodded and spoke into the intercom.

The intense light, filtered through the butterfly fabric, shone softly on Liu Yifei, making even the fine downy hairs on her face clearly visible, adding to her ethereal beauty.

The staff around her were staring at her; this girl was truly beautiful.

"Holy crap, you're exaggerating!" Someone slapped the back of the head of the person next to them.

The person next to him was drooling, but then he sucked it back up.

Liu Yifei, however, did not feel uncomfortable in the filming area and remained obediently standing still, like a model student.

"There's some light splashing onto the green screen, and there are shadows on the green screen behind the actors," Peter Pau pointed to the monitor screen.

As a photographer, he needs to ensure the authenticity of the images while also providing chroma keying for post-production special effects.

"Set up a black flag above this position to block the main light beam and prevent it from entering the camera's view," Qin Xuan pointed to the screen.

Peter Wang indicated that he understood and said into the walkie-talkie, "Mechanical team, set up a large black flag above and to the right rear of the actor."

The black flag is similar to a blackout cloth used to block out light sources.

Once set up, the light splashing onto the green screen disappeared, ensuring the green screen was spotless and without any shadows. Director Minkoff had quietly come up behind them and, seeing a young man directing from behind the scenes, couldn't help but stare at him curiously.

"Now you can turn on the green screen lights." Qin Xuan observed for a moment.

Peter Wang spoke into the walkie-talkie, and the entire semi-enclosed green screen was illuminated, lighting up the entire green screen space.

The power consumption is enormous when the light is turned on. He said into the walkie-talkie, "Electricians, please check if the output power is normal."

"Everything is normal," the electrician replied.

Qin Xuan's plan involved using lower power outputs and did not involve large-scale use of high-power lamps.

As long as the power supply can handle it, there shouldn't be any problems.

With a serious expression, Bao Dexi stared at the color data on the screen and oscilloscope. The isolation of the main light proved that the post-production keying would be simpler.

He noticed that the ripples on the surface were uneven and pointed out, "The brightness is not uniform."

"The main subject's aperture is set to 1.5." Qin Xuan also noticed this.

Soon the main lights were brightened. To achieve balance in this ripple effect, the main lights had to be brighter than the green screen lights. The exact brightness had to be adjusted little by little.

Any flat line will do.

So setting up the lights isn't enough; you have to adjust them little by little. You really can't do this without some technical skill.

Qin Xuan was clearly very professional. After a series of instructions, he completely isolated the green screen light and the main light and adjusted them to the softest balance point.

But it wasn't that simple. Everyone continued to stare at the screen, and Qin Xuan said, "Have Teacher Liu gently shake his shoulders and head."

Upon hearing the instruction, Liu Yifei slightly moved her shoulders and tilted her head to the sides, like a robot.

After all, she didn't know how to move.

This is to observe whether there is color bleeding at the edges of the figure, that is, an unnatural green reflection.

Because some costumes, props, or silky objects like hair on the actors' bodies can easily produce unnatural reflections of light or contamination, this increases the difficulty of post-production chroma keying.

"It seems like there's some color bleeding." Peter Pau has a sharp eye.

"Really?" Peter Wang seemed not to notice; if this substance is very faint, it is difficult to observe with the naked eye.

"There should be!" Bao Dexi wasn't sure either, but he preferred to have it anyway, because he wanted to ensure the quality.

Minkov also craned his neck to take a closer look, but couldn't figure it out either. He didn't say anything, leaving professional matters to the professionals.

To the untrained eye, these old men would look like they're watching porn together.

"Please have Teacher Liu face the host computer and don't move," Qin Xuan instructed.

Liu Yifei turned around to face the camera.

Qin Xuan observed for a moment, then said, "Slowly turn left and right, move around a bit, and shake your hair."

Liu Yifei moved around like a robot, her movements delicate and fragmented, like a curious little deer tentatively exploring, with a touch of agility.

Then, without moving her neck, she mechanically tossed her hair around, as if she were spinning a hula hoop around her neck, which looked comical.

I don't know how she did it, but she made everyone who was observing her burst out laughing.

The originally serious atmosphere was somewhat diluted.
