Chapter 48 The End of the Story
Chapter 48 The End of the Story
The situation of the Frederick family seems to be very bad. They are unwilling to wait even a little longer and want to take Ita back in the morning.
Before the departing convoy, Itha was saying his final farewells to Yumilia, while Doruvan, on the other side, whispered to Caesar:
"Thank you very much for your help to the Frederick family this time. You protected the head of the family, which is equivalent to saving the entire family. If you have any needs, the family will do its best to meet them."
Doruvan learned the whole story from Ita, and he clearly did not regard Caesar as a child, but as a reclusive and powerful figure with a unique style of doing things.
"I have no demands. Everything I've done is simply out of affection for an old friend," Caesar said softly, looking at Ita.
Doruvin remained silent for a while, choosing not to ask any further questions about Caesar's true identity.
"In addition, we have also taken care of things with the Rhine Bureau for you, and no one will bother you anymore."
Caesar nodded, having learned from him that the organization those people belonged to was called the Rhine Bureau.
Doruvan took out a brooch from his pocket. It was exquisitely carved with a red kite pattern and a clear ruby set in the center of the flower.
"Furthermore, this is a token of the Frederick family. With it, if you have any problems that need to be solved, the family's influence anywhere in the world will do its part."
Caesar remained silent for a moment, but ultimately chose to accept it.
"Goodbye," Caesar said softly, ruffling Ita's hair.
Ita lowered her head, turned around and was about to get into the car, but then suddenly turned back, hugged Caesar, and kissed him on the cheek.
Caesar looked at her in surprise. Ita blushed, but her gaze was firm as she said to him:
"I will definitely strive to become an excellent head of the family, so Caesar, don't forget to come find me in the future!"
Caesar looked at the earnest-looking little dragon, smiled faintly, and nodded: "Yes, definitely."
As the convoy gradually drove away, Ita leaned half his body out of the car window, waving goodbye until the car disappeared into the mountains.
Yumilia took back her handkerchief, wiped away her tears, and her voice was still trembling with sobs:
"I never imagined that we would have to part ways so soon."
"Yes, I can't believe it. It feels like so much has happened in just one day," Caesar said, gazing at the end of the road.
Yumilia lowered her head, remained silent for a long time, and then whispered, "What if Caesar grows up and leaves me like this too?"
Caesar looked at her, then turned his head away.
"Will not."
"Hmm?" Yumilia looked at him.
“I told you, it won’t happen.” Caesar’s face turned slightly red, but his tone rose a little. “So you can stop worrying about this and that.”
Yumilia looked at him, opened her mouth, and then gave a warm smile.
Caesar looked at her, unsure of what to say. After hesitating for a long time, he finally spoke:
"Let's go, we should go home."
"Okay! Let's go home!"
The pebble traced a graceful parabola before landing in the lake in front of it, creating ripples in circles.
Lean leaned against a big tree, idly tossing pebbles into the lake, watching the ripples spread out in circles until the water returned to calm, then tossing in another pebble.
The bushes around him rustled, and someone stood beside him. Seeing his actions, they couldn't help but start complaining:
"We've been looking for you outside for ages, and you've just been sitting there throwing stones?" "So, what's up?" Rean asked without turning his head.
Seeing this, Sothos had no choice but to sit down with him and move the pile of pebbles beside him.
"Alright, alright. I know you're not satisfied with the title bestowed upon you. To be honest, none of us brothers are satisfied either, but so what? Something is better than nothing, right?"
"Ha," Rean sneered sarcastically, "He protected him day and night, traveling thousands of miles, losing so many brothers, and in the end all he got were a few pieces of broken land and some bullshit honorary knight title."
Angry words were squeezed out from between his teeth. Rean grabbed the pile of stones that Sothos had taken and threw them all into the lake in one go, creating ripples that spread across the lake.
"I should have stabbed that fat pig in the ass halfway there!"
“I know you’re angry, but that’s how the rules are. No matter how great your achievements are, even if you saved the king and protected him back to the kingdom, according to your rank, you can only be rewarded up to this level. Going any higher would break the rules.”
"Rules? What rules? Bloodlines? The absolute monopoly on land set by those nobles?" Rean said coldly.
"Pretty much. If you were a nobleman or someone in your family had been rewarded, you would definitely get a large reward this time. But we are just mercenaries who do the dirty work, and you are just a mercenary leader. We are disliked wherever we go. It would be good enough if we could get a reward. If we were in other places, we would be kicked out!" Sothos shrugged and said.
“We know you want everyone to have a better life, but there are limits to what ordinary people can achieve,”
"Are kings and nobles born with a special destiny?" Rean said indignantly.
"What the hell? You're bringing this up again."
Sothos shook his head and patted him on the shoulder reassuringly:
"Alright, think positively. At least you have some status now, and the brothers aren't a bunch of stray dogs following you anymore. At least you don't have to run around anymore. Who knows, you might make some merits in the future and get a marquis title or something, so you'll never have to worry about food and clothing again. Isn't that great?"
"Good my ass," Rean said irritably, turning to look at Sothos. "Are you satisfied with just these few worthless titles?"
"Then what else do you want? To be king?" Sothos said.
“Too small,” Rean said. “To truly humiliate those nobles, we need to build a larger kingdom and become a bigger king, even bigger than Emperor Clyde’s.”
Clyde was a famous emperor more than two hundred years ago who had the great achievement of unifying all human kingdoms in the western continent. At that time, his territory was the largest in the world.
"Are you kidding me again? It is quite funny." Sothos nodded.
“I’m serious,” Rean said.
Sothos paused slightly, staring at him for a long time, seemingly realizing he wasn't joking, but the corners of his mouth couldn't help but turn up in a smile.
Finally, Sothos couldn't help but burst into laughter, laughing so hard that he leaned against the tree, clutching his stomach tightly.
Rean kept smiling at him without saying a word, but after a minute, he couldn't help but shout out:
"That's enough! You're making me laugh so hard I almost died!"
"Sorry, sorry," Sothos patted his head and chuckled, "But you know, Clyde inherited his father's kingdom and that's how he built such a vast territory. We're just small-time mercenaries, we might die on the roadside any day, so what are we dreaming about?"
Rean scoffed, "How can a sparrow know the ambitions of a swan?"
"Please, speak in a way that Elijahs can understand," Sothos patted his shoulder.
"Alright, if you have nothing else to do, hurry back. Everyone is waiting for you and getting quite anxious, especially Grace. She's been looking for you everywhere, even turning the sheepfold upside down."
After Sothos finished speaking, he got up and left, leaving Rean alone there, gazing at the shimmering lake for a long time.
