Reborn in 1878: America's Number One Bandit
Chapter 48 Canyon Ambush
Chapter 48 Canyon Ambush
The town of Saint Rafael.
Outside the sheriff's office, which was temporarily serving as the command post.
More than fifty police officers from Marin County gathered together in a relaxed manner.
Allen Cross stood on the office steps and said sarcastically:
"During my years in the military, I saw the dumbest recruits, and even a coward who wet his pants out of fear."
"However, I must congratulate you, gentlemen. You have redefined my understanding of what 'trash' truly means!"
The insulting words made the officers' faces turn pale and then red.
But no one dared to move.
Cross roared, "Now, you bunch of trash, listen up! We're not going out for a picnic tonight. Anyone who falls behind, anyone who deserts, I guarantee you, before the bandits' bullets hit you, my bullet will be already shoving into your ass from behind!"
After the harsh reprimand, Cross mounted his horse.
He has no one else to rely on, so he has to grit his teeth and make do with this bunch of trash.
Urged on by Thompson, the officers reluctantly mounted their horses.
Low grumbling rose from within the ranks.
"FUCK! Who does this butcher think he is? Does he really think we're his personal soldiers?" "We're sheriffs, not the fucking army!"
"My wife is still waiting for me at home..."
Thompson retreated to the middle of the group, reassuring his men: "Don't worry, I just asked. We'll just watch from a distance and find a safe place to observe the situation."
Even if a battle does break out, we don't need to participate. Mr. Cross is just trying to take advantage of our familiarity with the terrain.
Hearing that they didn't have to personally participate, everyone's mood improved slightly.
The skinny monkey said disdainfully to the one-eyed man beside him, "Look at them, these are the local sheriffs. A bunch of spineless cowards."
The group slowly made its way towards the railway line in the darkness.
The team traveled for more than an hour on the rugged mountain road, gradually entering a narrow pass with only one narrow passage.
This is the only way to get to the railway line.
Just as the group reached the narrowest part of the pass, Cross suddenly raised his hand and reined in the horses.
"Stop!"
The skinny monkey and the one-eyed man reacted almost simultaneously.
They dismounted and, as fast as they could, sought cover among rocks and trees, their Winchester rifles already loaded.
They sensed a strong sense of danger.
The police officers in Marin County were still looking around blankly, completely bewildered.
"What's wrong, sergeant?" a young officer asked, still looking bewildered.
The voice that answered him was not Thompson's.
Instead, it was a gunshot that rang out without warning!
"boom!"
The young police officer's head exploded like a watermelon that had been smashed by a sledgehammer.
Red and white brain matter mixed with blood splattered all over the face of his companion.
"Bang! Boom!"
"FUCK! There's an ambush!"
"Take cover! Take cover now!"
It was only then that the slow-witted police officers snapped out of their daze.
They screamed and scrambled off their horses, frantically searching for any place to hide.
The warhorse was startled and neighed as it ran wildly in all directions.
Cross's face was extremely grim.
Damn it! There really was an ambush!
Judging by their firepower, their numbers are definitely not small!
"Nine o'clock! On the mountainside! There are at least twenty guns!" Skinny Monkey shouted to Cross from behind a rock.
One-Eyed Man growled, "Major! Skinny Monkey and I will sneak up and take them out from the flank!"
These two are indeed formidable warriors who have crawled out of piles of corpses.
Before he finished speaking, One-Eyed Dragon attempted to use the terrain as cover to maneuver to the other side of the mountainside.
He had barely poked half his body out when a volley of bullets struck the rock in front of him, sending up a string of dazzling sparks.
He was forced to shrink back in a sorry state, unable to even lift his head.
"FUCK! Their firepower is too strong! They've blocked all possible routes!"
Skinny Monkey also tried to peek out and fight back, but with the same result. The enemy's fierce firepower left him with absolutely no openings.
Thompson scrambled over to Cross's side and asked, "Mr. Cross! What should we do?"
Cross shoved him aside and yelled, "What are you holding, a fire poker? Shoot! All of you, return fire! Charge!"
Thompson had no choice but to bite the bullet and shout, "Follow me! Charge!"
He, along with a few officers who were somewhat courageous, attempted to stand up and fight back.
However, they had just straightened up.
The police officers were riddled with bullets, their flesh mangled, and they fell to the ground screaming in agony.
at this time.
Cross discovered that there were also shadowy figures on the other side of the pass!
They actually wanted to outflank them!
"Damn it!"
Cross no longer counts on this bunch of useless people.
He suddenly raised the huge Colt Dragoon revolver and, relying on the instincts honed on the battlefield, pulled the trigger!
"boom!"
In the distant woods, a figure fell to the ground.
But this fatal shot was like stirring up a hornet's nest!
The robbers moved even faster!
They took turns providing cover and quickly pressed forward from both flanks!
A barrage of bullets rained down on Cross's location.
Cross dodged quickly, but a stray bullet still tore open the muscle in his left shoulder, spraying blood everywhere.
A burning, sharp pain spread from my shoulder throughout my body.
"Major!"
The skinny monkey and the one-eyed dragon immediately pounced on him and dragged him behind a larger rock.
"No! We have to retreat!"
One-Eyed Dragon said urgently, "These police officers are absolutely useless! They can't even organize proper fire support! If we stay any longer, we'll be surrounded!"
Just then, Thompson pointed to a fork in the road behind him and shouted urgently, "Major! I know a shortcut! We can get out of there! Everyone, follow me!"
This cowardly local bully finally played his only role.
Cross glanced at the battlefield.
His team had completely collapsed, with heavy casualties among the officers, and the remaining officers were simply running away in panic, having no fighting ability whatsoever.
"withdraw!"
Thompson immediately led Cross and less than half of the remaining officers into the wooded path and fled in a sorry state.
behind them.
The stalker gang's henchmen were like maggots clinging to a bone, relentlessly pursuing them.
Every now and then, a police officer who had fallen behind would scream and collapse on the road.
The pursuit continued until they escaped back to the edge of the town of Saint Rafael.
Cross directed them to climb over the low wall and return fire.
The bandits outside the town stopped their pursuit and retreated back into the dark wilderness.
But they didn't go far, like a patient pack of wolves, roaming outside the town.
……
The candlelight flickered in the sheriff's office.
Cross, shirtless, let the skinny monkey wash the wound on his shoulder with strong liquor.
The intense pain caused the veins on his forehead to bulge, but he didn't utter a sound. He just stared intently at the map on the table, his eyes filled with a terrifyingly sinister look.
"I knew these officers were useless, but I never imagined they could be this useless!" He slammed his fist on the table.
Actually, the blame cannot be entirely placed on the police officers.
Those gangsters on the other side were incredibly fierce and professional!
This was Cross's first direct confrontation with the Irish gang since arriving in Marin County.
However, the other party gave him a real shock, catching him completely off guard.
This was nothing like the rabble of thugs he knew!
Their tactical infiltration, fire coordination, and disciplined advance...
That was clearly an elite force!
Damn it!
We need to readjust our strategy.
Or we could directly request the governor to send an additional battalion of militia!
Cross vowed that he would get his revenge.
Mrs. Marlene's farm, several dozen kilometers away.
With a blank expression, Lawson moved a canine tooth-shaped mark representing the "Sassy Dogs" gang from the pass to the outskirts of Saint Raphael.
