Chapter 36: Alarming the Snake
Chapter 36: Alarming the Snake
Kim, who was standing nearby, was terrified by the sudden attack and her companion's screams. Her first instinct was to jump up and run away.
But just as he propped himself up, another deadly arrow came flying at him in an instant!
"Pfft!"
The arrow pierced his right elbow, which he was about to use to exert force. The excruciating pain and the instant loss of power caused him to scream and fall heavily back to the ground.
In just one encounter, the two bandits on watch instantly lost most of their mobility and suffered heavy losses!
Although Kim's arm was crippled and she was in excruciating pain, her legs were still intact.
The instinct for survival overwhelmed everything. He glanced at his companion Robert, who was wounded in the thigh, howling in pain and unable to move. A desperate struggle flashed in his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by utter selfishness.
Without any hesitation, and without even bothering to bandage himself, he gritted his teeth, scrambled to his feet, and, relying on his familiarity with the terrain, stumbled and fled for his life into the depths of the dense forest like a frightened hare!
Rezal emerged from behind an oak tree, his eyes as cold as ice.
He didn't choose to pursue the fleeing man. His priority was to capture someone alive, not to risk chasing a desperate fugitive through unfamiliar woods.
He calmly drew his bow again and aimed at Robert, who was struggling on the ground and trying to reach for the dagger at his waist.
call out!call out!
Two more arrows were fired with pinpoint accuracy, one piercing the calf of his other leg, completely eliminating any possibility of him standing up.
Another arrow grazed his scalp and embedded itself in the soil. The chilling threat of death instantly extinguished all of Robert's thoughts of resistance, leaving only terrified screams and pleas for mercy.
Only after confirming that the other party was no longer a threat did Rezal quickly step forward, tie Robert up tightly with the rope he carried, and drag him back to Lion's Tooth Territory like a dead dog.
When Kruze saw the prisoner, covered in blood and groaning, thrown by Rezal in the middle of the castle courtyard, he was stunned for a moment. Then, as if he had thought of some extremely troublesome possibility, he couldn't help but reach out and painfully cover his forehead.
“My God… Rezal, what did you bring back…” His voice was filled with helplessness and a sense of foreboding.
We've found a survivor, but trouble is likely to follow.
They captured the prisoners alive, but this undoubtedly exposed the territory's vigilance, essentially telling the enemy directly – you've been discovered!
“We’ve alerted the enemy…” Kruse muttered to himself, his tone heavy.
Kim, who escaped, will definitely return to report as quickly as possible. The bandits will have only two reactions: either abandon their plans and flee immediately, or... launch an attack before Lion Fang Territory is fully prepared, perhaps even tonight!
Given the greed and ferocity of these desperados, the latter is highly likely.
Time suddenly became incredibly tight.
"Forget it!" Kruse suddenly waved his hand, as if trying to shake off the unnecessary entanglement in his mind and the discomfort caused by the violent scene.
Now that things have come to this, regret is useless; we must take the most effective action immediately.
He was well aware of his limitations—born in a peaceful era, his only knowledge of torture and forced confessions came from blurry movie footage, and he had absolutely no practical experience.
This kind of thing needs to be done by professionals.
He immediately ordered the guards around him: "Go and fetch the First Master Sergeant, Wells, right now!"
Soon, Wilstone strode over, his chainmail still covered in the dust of the training ground, his eyes sharp as an eagle. When he saw Robert bound like a mummy on the ground, arrows still stuck in his legs, his face showed no surprise. He merely glanced at him coldly before bowing to Kruse with his hand on his chest: "Young Master, you wanted to see me?"
“Wilstone, this man is yours.” Kruze pointed at the prisoner, his voice calm to the point of being cold. “He’s one of the bandits who were spying outside the territory earlier; the other one escaped. I need to know exactly how many of them there are, who their leader is, what their equipment is like, what their original plan was, and… most importantly, when they are most likely to make their move! Find out as quickly as possible!”
A cruel understanding flickered across Wilstone's usually impassive face. He bowed again, his voice steady yet tinged with coldness: "Understood, young master. Rest assured, I have plenty of ways to make this scum talk. I will extract everything he knows in the shortest possible time, including the few coins he stole as a child."
He didn't ask any more questions, but simply gave a wink to the two soldiers behind him.
The two soldiers, who were clearly not novice at this, immediately stepped forward and, like dragging livestock to slaughter, pulled the constantly wailing and begging Robert towards the dark and damp depths of the castle dungeon.
Kruse felt a slight nausea in his stomach as he watched this scene, but he forced himself to look away and took a deep breath of the air, which smelled of rust and blood.
This is the law of survival in this world.
Kindness is reserved for one's own family.
When facing an enemy, especially one that wants you dead, any hesitation could cost you your life.
He now had to race against time to plan for the battle that might come tonight, based on the intelligence he was about to receive.
Wilstone was responsible for getting the enemy to talk, while he was responsible for protecting the home.
"You, come with me." Kruze didn't waste any words, beckoning to Rezael with a calm yet authoritative tone.
He turned and walked straight to the blacksmith's workshop in the corner of the castle, a place that had been temporarily converted and was filled with the clanging of metal all day long.
Rezal suppressed his doubts and quickly followed.
As he followed Kruse into the workshop, which still retained a scorching heat, and saw the pile of items covered in coarse linen in the corner, a guess began to form in his mind.
Kruse reached out and abruptly ripped open the burlap sack—
In an instant, the cold metallic luster flowed through the dimly lit workshop!
Rezal's breath hitched, his eyes widened instantly, his mouth opened involuntarily, and he froze on the spot as if he had been frozen in place, completely stunned.
Before him lay eight gleaming, armed longswords, neatly arranged!
Each sword features smooth lines and a straight spine. Although it lacks any ornate decorations, the even steel grain and sharp edge demonstrate its excellent craftsmanship and deadly practicality.
Beside the longsword, there were twenty oddly shaped spears piled up!
These spears do not have the traditional simple willow-leaf shape. Instead, they have obvious blood grooves and reinforcing ribs, and the spear tips are exceptionally sharp and ferocious. The wooden spear shafts are also carefully polished, and the grips are wrapped with non-slip strips of coarse cloth.
They stood there silently, like a group of venomous snakes poised to strike, exuding a chilling aura of menace.
