Chapter 48 They've Arrived
Chapter 48 They've Arrived (Seeking monthly votes and to continue reading)
That night, Chen Lai was taken the quilt and stuffed into the top-floor attic of Julie's house. Their house was the tallest and had the best view. The attic also had a small window for ventilation.
At night, a rumbling sound woke him up. It was the sound of tank tracks rolling over the ground, mixed with the noise of three-wheeled motorcycles. The Prosen were advancing. They were coming!
Chen Lai rolled over, clutching his Tokarev rifle, and looked out at the night sky without immediately setting up the weapon.
His mission was to confront General Pskov, not to shoot down the passing Prosen troops. The village was now considered "enemy territory," and killing people would enrage the Prosen, and none of Ulia and the others would survive.
Chen Lai didn't have to wait long. Kashgar Village was a small village, and the passing Prosen army wouldn't use too many people to occupy it. The sound of tank tracks only lasted for a while before fading away, and only the "hoo-hoo" of motorcycles approached.
They were motorized infantrymen; they had come to occupy the village and take a break. Their conversations could be heard in the darkness.
“Very good, very good, we are advancing faster than the Imperial Guard.”
"Das Dorf repariert, die Partisanen durchsuchen und morgen früh weitermachen." (Resting in the village, searching for guerrillas, and continuing the advance tomorrow morning.)
A cacophony of bird chatter erupted; the Prosen language had a very domineering ending, and it sounded even more tyrannical coming from the soldiers.
Chen Lai squinted, barely able to make out their outlines in the darkness. It was a motorized infantry regiment. Five three-wheeled motorcycles were parked at the village entrance, and two Opel Lightning transport vehicles also stopped. Dozens of motorized infantrymen were the first to advance into the village.
They didn't fire, which was unnecessary. Prosen's blitzkrieg was going very smoothly. Most of the Rosa-occupied areas fell into their hands before they even had a chance to react. At this point, Prosen still had the resources to spare and wouldn't carry out "ethnic cleansing" in the villages.
However, robbery is a given. Invaders invade others to rob them, so how could they possibly come for the sake of saying "I'll give you a better life"?
Thus, Chen Lai witnessed a silent robbery in the darkness of night. Dozens of Prosson infantrymen split into two at the village entrance and knocked on the doors of every house with practiced ease. Whether the houses opened or not, the butts of their 98K rifles would slam hard against the door bolts.
Those who open the door will be pushed to the ground, and those who don't will be hit with a rifle butt after they break down the door.
This is the discipline of violence. The two sides don't speak the same language. The Prosenians chatter on and on, but no one can understand them. They laugh and make a scene, brandishing weapons in your house, while you can only stand there, feeling awkward and helpless.
Only the elderly remained in the village, along with a villager suffering from polio. He couldn't stand the wind or walk, so he had no choice but to stay behind and evacuate with the villagers.
Grandma Joanna, still shaken, carried a wooden bucket to the village well to fetch water; the commotion had left her thirsty.
Unfortunately, the Prosen people had already "requisitioned" the well, and they estimated that they hadn't bathed for about half a month. At this moment, they took off their shirts, and a large group of people sang "Erica" while laughing and rubbing each other's backs, leaving Grandma Joanna with no choice but to wave her hand and go home.
But when she went home, her home was gone. Her house was the tallest and largest in the village, and the Prosen people had just put up a sign on the door saying "Temporary Command Post." Her house had been requisitioned!
"Hey old lady, your two-story house is great, let's use it as the command center, what an honor!"
A chubby Prossen soldier who knew a little about Rosa stood guard at the door, holding an MP35 submachine gun, and gave Joanna a thumbs up.
Joanna didn't need such praise. She covered her head with her headscarf and asked somewhat blankly, "You've taken over my house, where am I supposed to sleep?"
Prossenbing stopped answering, only looking at her with unfamiliar eyes; he probably couldn't understand human speech. But soon, the tall, thin Prossenbing, who was in charge of "settling" the villagers, arrived. He opened the backyard of the farmhouse, which was a barn, put up a sign at the door that read "Rosa People's Settlement," and then shoved the homeless elderly villagers inside.
The whole village suddenly erupted into chaos. Prosen soldiers were talking everywhere, their barbaric voices echoing everywhere. In some places, though there was no sound, their savagery was still clearly revealed.
Some people were catching chickens, ducks, and geese; others were looting houses of silk and valuables; some were bathing and singing at the wellhead; and still others were posting notices everywhere saying "Rosas people are not allowed."
This is the Prosen army, the kind of thing the occupying forces would have done in 1939: they don't kill, but they always have a knife at their heads.
"The colonel is here!"
Suddenly, a Prossen soldier shouted, and a jeep appeared at the village entrance. An officer wearing a black trench coat, boots, black leather gloves, and a peaked cap stepped out.
The officer exuded an imposing aura, his hands clasped behind his back like a haughty black eagle. The Prosen soldiers, who had just been scattered and undisciplined, suddenly became orderly. The military band lined up in two rows, welcoming the officer with music and military songs, while the other infantrymen stood straight, awaiting his inspection.
Chen Lai paused slightly. Old Kant had said that during Tsar Rosa's time, "golden eyes" were everywhere. Now, the Prosenians' "golden eyes" had also arrived, wanting to be masters.
What are golden eyes? Aren't they just mixed-race people?
The Prosen army should have organized mixed-race units, and given the strength of mixed-race individuals, it's highly likely they were officers.
So, is this "general" a mixed-race person?
Chen Lai was unaware of this, as he couldn't see clearly in the darkness, nor could he activate his Golden Eyes. His golden pupils were too conspicuous in the night, and he would be immediately exposed.
The officer walked to the residence where Chen Lai was hiding, which was also Julie's house, stopped, and turned around. The sergeant following behind him almost bumped into him.
"Clean up the village, keep things quiet for the next couple of days, and show good military discipline."
"The general is coming to inspect our regiment, and his guards will come along... As you know, the emperor's guards are ruthless and have little tolerance for inferior races. Although we are all Aryans, there are different classes among Aryans."
The officer was giving a long, rambling speech, while the Prossen soldiers behind him listened with their heads down. Chen Lai could see the officer's black hat from the attic and hear the noise, but he couldn't understand a word they were saying.
"What kind of gibberish is that? Someone translate it!"
Chen Lai fell silent, moved the gun barrel aside, and rolled to the other side, away from the window. The commotion of the night was over. The Prosen army wouldn't stay in the village for long. Once General Pskov arrived, everything would be alright.
