Chapter 90 Red Envelopes Rolling In

The morning light of the first day of the Lunar New Year shone into the room through the gaps in the curtains.

Lu Yuan's eyelids twitched, and his consciousness slowly emerged from the chaos. The first thing he saw when he opened his eyes was the girl's peaceful sleeping face so close to him.

Chen Xiaomiao curled up on her side, her long eyelashes casting two small shadows under her eyes.

She was sleeping soundly, her clean little face almost transparent in the morning light, her breathing even and long, and the corners of her mouth slightly upturned, as if she was dreaming of something wonderful.

Perhaps sensing the warmth beside her, she unconsciously snuggled closer to Lu Yuan, resting her head on his arm.

The girl exuded a faint fragrance, like a feather gently brushing against Lu Yuanxin's heart.

He stared blankly for a while, then, as if possessed, moved closer, gradually shortening the distance between them.

Just as they were about to touch soft lips, a vibrant red barrier appeared between them.

The girl, who should have been fast asleep, had opened her eyes at some point. Her foxy eyes sparkled as she looked at him, a hint of slyness in them.

"Hehe...ha..."

She handed over the red envelope, yawning, her voice soft and sleepy: "Here, this is your New Year's money."

Lu Yuan was both amused and exasperated. He reached out and took the red envelope, squeezing it. It turned out that this last red envelope was prepared for him.

"You've certainly made thorough preparations."

"That's not the case!"

Chen Xiaomiao proudly raised her chin, quickly got out of bed and changed her clothes.

Lu Yuan was completely speechless.

He could tell that, despite pretending to be an ostrich, the concept of seniority was still a hurdle in Chen Xiaomiao's mind, and she needed time to process it...

After the two finished washing up and came to the living room, Sun Yumei had already changed into a smart casual outfit and was about to go out.

Lu Yuan stepped forward and asked, "Grandma, are you going to the hospital on the first day of the Lunar New Year?"

"Many doctors in the department went back to their hometowns for the Chinese New Year, so we were short-staffed. I'll fill in for them since I'm free anyway."

Sun Yumei went to the entrance to change her shoes, then turned around and waved to Chen Xiaomiao: "Xiaomiao, Grandma is leaving first. Let Xiaoyuan take you to visit some relatives and get some red envelopes."

Lu Jianguo came out of the kitchen carrying a steaming bowl of glutinous rice balls, shouting, "Drive carefully! Come back soon!"

Grandma went to work, while Grandpa stayed home to receive guests who came to pay New Year's visits.

Lu Yuan led Chen Xiaomiao on a day of "visiting relatives".

Lu Jianguo is the eldest son in his family, with two younger brothers and a younger sister, all of whom live in Jiangcheng and the surrounding area.

As the eldest grandson of the eldest son, Lu Yuan naturally had to visit each household to offer New Year's greetings.

Throughout the day, Lu Yuan drove around most of Jiangcheng, giving away a lot of the New Year's goods he had prepared in the trunk, and the ones he brought back piled up like a small mountain.

Chen Xiaomiao followed behind him, her words as sweet as honey, calling out "Happy New Year, Uncle Grandpa" and "Happy New Year, Aunt Grandma" with increasing intimacy, reaping a bountiful harvest of praise and red envelopes.

It wasn't until 4 p.m. that the two dragged their tired bodies back to their large apartment.

Lu Yuan tossed his car keys onto the entryway cabinet and sank into the soft sofa in the living room, not wanting to move at all.

Chen Xiaomiao, however, was full of energy. She dumped all the red envelopes she had received that day onto the coffee table, and like a little squirrel hoarding food for winter, she squatted on the ground with great interest to start counting her spoils.

"One, two, three... ten, eleven..."

She carefully spread out the red bills one by one, muttering to herself.

Erbaiwu leaned over and curiously nudged the pile of money with his nose, only to be immediately slapped away by Chen Xiaomiao.

"Go away, this isn't your teething toy."

After finishing the count, she looked up at Lu Yuan with a shocked expression: "Lu Yuan! Guess how many there are?"

"How many?"

Lu Yuan lazily lifted his eyelids.

"Good heavens... 21,600 yuan!" Chen Xiaomiao's voice trembled slightly. This amount of money was a huge sum of money for her.

"normal."

Lu Yuan chuckled: "They all treat you like their future granddaughter-in-law and niece-in-law, so they're naturally generous with their red envelopes on your first visit."

"If we go next year, there won't be as many."

Chen Xiaomiao blushed, lowered her head, gathered the pile of money back together, carefully stacked it neatly, and then handed it to Lu Yuan.

"Lu Yuan, please save this to my phone."

Lu Yuan sat up, looked at the banknotes she handed him, and suddenly remembered something.

"Oh right, you're still using my secondary SIM card... Once your workplace reopens on the eighth day of the new year, I'll go with you to get your own phone card and bank card."

He thought Chen Xiaomiao would be happy, since it meant she had a true identity of her own in this era.

But the smile on Chen Xiaomiao's face gradually faded, her hand holding the money froze in mid-air, and her eyes revealed a hint of confusion and unease.

"What's wrong?" Lu Yuan noticed her change in mood.

Chen Xiaomiao pursed her lips, lowered her eyes, and muttered, "Why do they have to do it for me? Isn't this... okay?"

We were sleeping in the same bed, cuddling together, and today it's time to divide it up...

I'm heartbroken!
After a moment's thought, Lu Yuan immediately understood Chen Xiaomiao's concerns.

He patiently explained, "Xiao Miao, it's always more convenient for you to have your own phone and bank card. Don't worry about things that aren't relevant."

Chen Xiaomiao nodded as if she understood, but her mood remained low.

She pushed the wad of money forward again, insisting, "Then you should keep this money for now."

Lu Yuan couldn't refuse her, so he had no choice but to take the money first and transfer 20,000 yuan to her via WeChat.

The phone rang with a "ding," and Chen Xiaomiao silently clicked to accept the notification. Then she stared blankly at the balance in her WX Wallet for a long while.

This is much faster money-making than her painstakingly writing!
Chen Xiaomiao looked up and asked, "Lu Yuan, are you going to pay New Year's visits again tomorrow?"

Lu Yuan teased, "What's wrong? Addicted to receiving red envelopes?"

Chen Xiaomiao scratched his head sheepishly and gave a sheepish smile.

As the old saying goes, "A fool wouldn't make money if he could..."

Since she's going to be Lu Yuan's "wife," she has to make the most of her value as a "wife."

"All the relatives on my grandfather's side are here in Jiangcheng. We've already visited them all today."

Lu Yuan leaned back on the sofa and stretched: "If we're leaving again tomorrow, we'll have to go to Grandma's relatives' house. But..."

He didn't really want to move; it would be so comfortable to stay at home, scroll through his phone, and play with the dog.

A phone call and a blessing are enough; the sentiment is conveyed.

"But what?"

“Grandma’s hometown is in the neighboring Hunan province. It takes most of the day to drive there, which is quite a hassle.”

Chen Xiaomiao's eyes lit up, and she blurted out, "Grandma's house, is it Xiaoyao and the others?"

Lu Yuan nodded: "Yes, Xiao Yao is the daughter of Grandma's nephew."

"Go ahead, I can drive you!"

Chen Xiaomiao immediately perked up: "That's exactly what I was thinking of going to see Xiaoyao. She said she'd treat me to sugar-coated fried dough sticks last time!"

Seeing the girl's enthusiasm and eagerness, Lu Yuan sighed, propped himself up from the sofa, and looked at her with helpless doting.

"Okay!" he decided. "Get up early tomorrow and get ready to leave."
