Chapter 55, Event 12 Occurs

Chapter 55, Section 12: The Incident Occurs
—Makang Street. Streetside—

At 9:27 a.m., a police car pulled up to the side of the road.

Under the bright sunshine, four police officers were discussing work arrangements under the shade of a tree.

"Alright, now that the requirements for today's visits and investigations have been explained, the remaining issue is about group assignments..."

"Uh……"

The discussion among the four ended there. Officer Rory put down the street map and looked awkwardly at the faces surrounding him—Rayleigh, He Ye, and the respectable Sergeant Loris.

It's currently morning work scheduling time. To better manage manpower, the four of us need to split into groups as we did yesterday, which will be much more efficient.

In response, Riley automatically stood next to Officer Rory—standing ramrod straight with his hands by his sides, looking energetic and bright-eyed, like a staunch supporter.

Opposite the two were He Ye and Loris.

The two men stood together, their wrists connected by silver handcuffs, a common method of restraint. They looked like sworn enemies, one with his arms crossed and a hostile expression, the other with a lifeless look in his pocket, looking to the right.

It seems that grouping is a no-brainer.

"Then... then let's stick with yesterday's group assignments, no objections?"

Rory said awkwardly that although he sympathized with He Ye, he couldn't bring himself to offend Loris, and that things had turned out this way, which seemed to be understandable...

Who told him to smile so brightly this morning?
“No problem!” Ridley shouted, standing next to Rory and speaking with great enthusiasm.

"That's settled then." Loris turned around aloofly, simultaneously pulling off the silver handcuffs on her wrists.

"Oh~" He Ye wanted to say something, but his right hand was already pulled away, so he could only stagger around and wave.

"Goodbye, goodbye," He Ye said, backing away.

He seemed to be in good spirits.

"He seems to be in pretty good spirits..." Officer Rory sighed, stroking his chin with a slight sense of relief.

"Could it be that he's finding joy in misery?" Rayleigh flashed his bright white teeth, his smile carrying a hint of schadenfreude.

Haha, that makes a lot of sense. Rory looked again and found that He Ye was probably also making the best of a bad situation. He followed Lolis's steps and enjoyed the breeze. It seems that some things can't be regretted once they've been done, and can only be silently endured. Then he recalled that at least he was happy at that time.

"Let's begin with the first inquiry."

Officer Rory turned and walked away quietly, no longer concerned, because it didn't matter.

"Yes!"

Rayleigh saluted, then jogged after him, muttering, "Sir, what are we having for lunch?"

"This is just the beginning... Well, let's make beef stew with peas."

"Yes!"

……

The other end.

The silver handcuffs swayed between the two men who were chained together.

The two people walking side by side were going through the streets and alleys, neither of them speaking, only the silver handcuffs were closing the distance between them.

Lorice didn't want to talk because of what happened this morning;
He Ye knew that speaking was the fuse that ignited the powder keg, so he kept quiet.

There is no doubt that the atmosphere between them was not harmonious, and it became even more intense after they separated from the four-person team. To describe them as enemies on a narrow road is an understatement.

He Ye felt that he would have to wear these tattered handcuffs while on duty, at least for this morning—recalling the chase in the police station not long ago, when Lolis ran for five or six minutes but couldn't catch up with him, making her so angry that she put her hands on her knees and gasped for breath, her cheeks flushed.

In modern terms, it's called red-temperature.

He Ye could understand the feeling of extreme anger, but it couldn't be entirely blamed on him—who told this guy to like giving orders so much? It would be better to stop while things were going well and everyone would be happy.

The focus shifts back.

"This is the first one, right? Shall we go?"

"You come."

Upon arriving at the dairy shop, the two did not make eye contact, as if they were talking to thin air, but they were still able to have a normal conversation.

The tacit understanding still exists.

The only one who found this strange was the shop owner.

Facing the two menacing police officers, he stared wide-eyed at the silver handcuffs, unable to utter a word for a long time. He could only rub his hands together in a fawning manner.

A few minutes later, I closed the laptop.

He Ye held out the black booklet, but Loris didn't take it. She just snorted and said, "Take it yourself."

After glancing at her, He Ye put the black book into his jacket pocket, thinking that this was the embodiment of being given the cold shoulder. He gently lifted his hat to comfort the unpredictable shopkeeper in front of him.

"I'm sorry, my superior hasn't been in a good mood lately. Thank you for your cooperation."

Before she could finish speaking, He Ye was pulled away by Loris through the silver handcuffs. She said irritably...
Don't you realize I'm in a bad mood?

“Sigh, I apologize if it’s about what happened this morning.” He Ye shook his head melancholically. “That incident was half a misunderstanding. I actually have respect for you, sir.”

"You're just all talk," Loris said, displeased. "Fine, fine," He Ye replied, having already explained the story of the red pear, and couldn't ask for any more understanding.

Loris is just angry right now. There was some good intention in He Ye's actions during that mix-up, and she'll understand when she calms down.

The investigation continued. It was initially thought that He Ye had done all the work for the first twenty people, but fortunately, when they reached the seventeenth shop owner, Loris seemed to be less upset and dissatisfied—this time, she took the lead in conducting the inquiry.

"Take it."

After finishing her inquiry at the tailor shop, Loris handed him the notebook, at least offering him a way out, even though his attitude remained arrogant.

He Ye had no reason not to accept it.

As expected, the morning would pass by uneventfully. She'd ask the residents of Makang Street for directions, then leave with a look of astonishment in their eyes. Her daily duties, half-heartedly, would wear down Loris's anger until lunchtime when she'd grumble as she unlocked her silver handcuffs—

After all, it's hard to eat when both of their wrists are handcuffed.

Time passed gradually in the slanting angle of the sunlight, and the shadows of the residential buildings became more and more upright. The two had already checked the work of more than fifty people without any slackening.

On their way to the next shop, He Ye and Loris accidentally touched hands. Loris's hands were a little cold because the silver handcuffs were indeed in the way.

Fortunately, Lolis frowned slightly but didn't seem bothered, which put He Ye's mind at ease. Just a moment ago, he thought he was about to have his foot stepped on.

Just as I was about to suggest in advance whether or not to untie it—

"Hmm, teacher?"

A boy darted out from the street corner, carrying a pile of pebbles, clearly preparing for some kind of children's fight, but stopped when he saw the rice paddies on the road.

He Ye recognized the boy who called out to her and was a little surprised: "What's wrong? Kane?"

"Hmm, teacher, why are you handcuffed?" Kane asked with a hint of concern, then looked up and smiled, "By the way, are you free today? I'm planning to go find Fleck and the others to break rocks!"

"Uh……"

As soon as he finished speaking, it was clear that Loris, who was standing next to him, was unhappy. He Ye couldn't blame him for not understanding the atmosphere, so he could only helplessly explain:
"Sorry, your teacher is on a mission and can't play with you... Remember not to lose all your beloved pebbles this time."

He Ye stretched out his right hand, which wasn't handcuffed, and patted the little guy's head to send him away.

Kane was so dizzy from being rubbed that he blinked and asked curiously:

"A mission? Is it the same as yesterday, where you're asking about the whereabouts of some strange people? In that case, I know something that might be of help to you, teacher."

Kane's tone wasn't joking; he looked at the pebble with seriousness, which surprised both of them.

He Ye glanced at Lolis, waiting for his superior's instructions; otherwise, if he talked a little longer, he might be accused of slacking off.

Loris thought for a moment and asked directly, "What news?"

Kane thought for a moment, then slowly said:
"It's about something related to Sister Mia... She's in real danger lately!"

"Like last night, she was driven home in a beautiful and impressive car, carrying several bags of clothes. She was dressed very elegantly, like a lady in the newspaper!"

"Then, several aunties said that she had been tricked and that the man only liked her face and would throw her away after he was done with her."

“Brother Sain also likes Sister Mia. He even went to ask about it yesterday, but left Sister Mia’s house sadly a while later. He said that man is an absolutely wicked villain who uses money to deceive people’s hearts.”

"So I think we should arrest Mia's boyfriend! I've met him a few times; he's a very old man, old enough to be Mia's father!"

Kane spoke with childlike enthusiasm, clearly his black-and-white worldview made it difficult for him to understand many things.

After listening, He Ye realized that this was something the children had told her about under the banyan tree yesterday—the story of a rich grandfather finding a beautiful mistress, and it seemed that a sequel had appeared the next day.

Loris thought about it for a moment; she had seen a record of this in He Ye's black book.

To be frank, however, such matters are not worth paying too much attention to—the two are not private investigators hired to investigate a client's infidelity; they are there to find clues about spies who threaten national security.

Just as Loris was about to end this boring conversation, Kane on the other end suddenly exclaimed and pointed.

"Look! That's the car!"

Kane's exclamation drew their attention, and a black car drove by on the street, its door bearing the family crest in the shape of antlers.

Its appearance resembles an extended version of a classic Lincoln, undoubtedly symbolizing power and money.

Loris's expression immediately turned serious: "Are you sure it's that car?"

“That’s right, I saw Mia come down from up there yesterday! I guess that uncle is going to pick her up now,” Kane said.

"Very good, thank you for the information, kid. I will contact someone to give you the appropriate reward later."

After speaking, Lorice strode forward, clearly intending to catch up with the car and find out where it eventually stopped; even her tone and wording were unconsciously official evasive.

Knowing that something had happened, He Ye said a brief goodbye to Kane.

"Goodbye Kane, and remember to come home soon."

"Hey teacher, aren't you going to play?!"

"I'm going to arrest the criminal." He Ye turned and followed, "I'll help you next time."

"Are we going to arrest that uncle?" Kane shouted excitedly, putting his hands to his mouth like a megaphone. "Then I can tell you where Mia lives! She lives next to the hair salon on Lane 26, in room 201 on the second floor! Make sure to protect her!"

He Ye didn't say anything more, only leaving behind a waving goodbye figure, and soon disappeared from his sight along with Lolis.
