Chapter 75 How could bandits possibly defeat an army?
Seeing that the pureblood thief had completely lost his mind, Assassin raised his hand, signaling the player holding the whip to stop. He stepped forward and looked at the dying alien.
"Well, time to confess?"
"I confess, I confess," the pureblood cunning strategist said with his last ounce of strength, his voice filled with utterly defeated submission, "I am a fallen angel, I repent..."
Assassin's expression froze instantly. He paused for a moment, then said, "No, who told you to say you're a fallen angel? I'm asking you, where are your pure-blooded kin now!"
"What pure-blooded kin?" A hint of human confusion even appeared in the cunning man's compound eyes. "I don't know... Aren't I a fallen angel?"
"..." Assassin was silent for a moment, then turned to the player next to him and said, "Don't use this thing next time."
"Now?" the other party asked tentatively.
"Keep smoking! Smoke until you die!" Assassin said irritably.
"Alright!" The player perked up and raised the whip again.
"Ah! Ah! Ah! I really repent! I am truly a fallen angel! Stop whipping me! Stop whipping me..."
Assassin didn't bother to look anymore. He turned around and waved to his company of soldiers: "Alright, alright, each squad can go about their own business. Report back if anything serious happens."
As soon as he finished speaking, some of the players scattered in a panic; others remained, still enjoying the inhumane tragedy.
Assassin walked to the side, picked up the walkie-talkie, and tuned to an encrypted channel: "Samsung calling Slime, Samsung calling Slime, can you hear me?"
"Yes," Ruan Wenbo's voice quickly came from the other side, "So, was your interrogation plan successful?"
“It failed,” Assassin sighed, his tone full of helplessness. “I reckon this thing doesn’t actually make people tell the truth; it just forcibly distorts the target’s perception. But the Dark Angels only need the other party to admit that they are a fallen angel, so they don’t care what the real effect of this whip is.”
“Although there are many flaws in this effect, I don’t find it too surprising,” Ruan Wenbo complained in the channel. “Anyway, I have a new task for you.”
"Remember Commissar Walter? Our operation here was a success, so we can't just leave him to his own devices. Luckily, you've taken out a pure-blooded scoundrel and don't have anything urgent to do for the time being, so I'm assigning this task to you."
"Okay, I guarantee I'll complete the mission." Assassin readily agreed and then put down the walkie-talkie.
He turned to look at the players around him, some still watching the commotion, others already playing cards in small groups, and shouted at the top of his lungs, "Where's the deputy platoon leader? Where the deputy platoon leader went?! I need to regroup my troops!"
……
A torrent of steel rumbled through the rusted metal tunnels. A Leman Russ Punisher tank led the way, its massive bulldozer blade easily crushing the cultists' crude defenses built of scrap metal and junk. Then, the six-barreled Gatling guns on the turrets began to spin, emitting a roar that tore through the air. A dense hail of bullets formed an unstoppable metal storm, ripping any creature daring to peek out from behind the obstacles, along with their bunkers, to shreds.
Five Chimera armored personnel carriers followed closely behind, their roof-mounted heavy loggers firing intermittently, turning any enemies attempting to flank from higher ground into mincemeat. Players sat in the bumpy carriages, or simply followed along the flanks of the armored vehicles, using laser guns to clean up any stragglers terrified by the tank fire. The armored unit advanced at an extremely rapid pace, often becoming separated from the infantry behind, creating deadly gaps in narrow passages. However, the cultists clearly lacked the ability to exploit these openings to destroy the company. They either trembled in fear under the Punisher tanks' ferocity, or, having just organized a suicide squad, were swiftly picked off by the precise fire of the players atop the chimeras.
Above them, in the "sky" composed of countless pipes, bridges, and metal platforms, a Valkyrie assault transport ship hovered close to the dome. Its firepower was negligible compared to ground troops, but it, along with several paratroopers inside the cabin equipped with specialized reconnaissance gear, formed the eyes of the company.
Once signs of a large-scale gathering of cultists are detected, the coordinates will be immediately transmitted to the rear. Then, three bipedal wyvern self-propelled cannons will roar, and waves of high-explosive shells will rain down from the sky, accurately covering the target area and blasting the newly emboldened rebel forces and their positions back to scrap.
This rebel force, mainly composed of bullies, brainwashed cultists, and violent gangsters, vanished as quickly as snowflakes in the sunlight under such ample firepower and targeted tactical breakthroughs.
Ultimately, the reason these guys were able to wreak havoc in the lower realms was simply because the main forces of the Peditian Astral Army and the PDF (Planetarial Defense Force) had already been dismantled under the combined attacks of the Greenskins, Chaos, Genestealers, and the Dark Eldar. They only managed to suppress those loyal remnants by virtue of their numerical superiority.
Even so, they couldn't break through this remnant force after a long siege, and the Deathbringers even seized the opportunity to capture the chemical refinery and launch a counterattack into Zhongchao. Now, when the Deathbringers returned with a Lemanrus Punisher, three wyverns, five chimeras, and even Valkyries and paratroopers in the air, it would be strange if they could hold out.
After all, how could bandits possibly defeat an army?
……
At the other end of the nest, in a makeshift repair station, Commissar Walter leaned against a rusty metal wall, wiping his ephemeral pistol, a symbol of his status. The soldiers around him were mostly young men, barely adults, their faces weary and grime-covered, but their eyes still held the vigilance expected of soldiers.
Suddenly, a dull, rhythmic vibration came from afar.
At first, no one paid much attention; the industrial area of Xiachao was never short of noise. But soon, the sound became clear. It wasn't the chaotic roar of industry, but a completely different kind of steel symphony, full of violent aesthetics.
A young guard gripped his laser gun tightly: "Political Commissar, what's that sound? Another attack?"
Walter did not answer immediately. He straightened up, turned his head slightly, and closed his eyes, like a connoisseur listening to a symphony. His ears were more familiar with the roar of the Imperial war machines than any detector.
A few seconds later, he opened his eyes, his gaze filled with disbelief and shock.
He murmured, his voice so soft it was almost inaudible: "Valkyrie... Lemanrus... Chimera... and... self-propelled artillery... Could it be... that they actually succeeded?!"
An officer beside him also sensed something amiss. He excitedly grabbed Walter's arm, his voice trembling with elation: "Political Commissar, is the rescue team here?!"
This question was like a pebble thrown into stagnant water, instantly creating huge ripples in the hearts of all the soldiers. They all looked up at their political commissar, and for the first time, emotions other than despair appeared on their young, tired faces.
Walter glanced around at the young faces that had followed him all this time, never giving up even in the face of adversity. He saw the fire burning in their eyes. He took a deep breath and gave his first genuine smile in days.
“Yes…” He nodded solemnly, his voice not loud, but clearly reaching everyone’s ears, “Hope really does exist.”
