Chapter 19: Why does this man have three golden donuts on his head? (Please continue reading!)
In the blink of an eye, a month passed quietly.
Under Locke's careful care, Dio finally recovered and was discharged from the hospital.
Although the boy was still lively and energetic, he couldn't resist Locke's forceful pressing of him onto the hospital bed.
During this period, Clark, Jonathan and Martha took turns to accompany Locke to take care of this stubborn blond boy.
Even Anthony took time out to visit, bringing a basket of fresh fruit and exaggerated greetings:
"Oh, my little hero! You really scared me to death!"
However, Lex Luthor never showed up.
Perhaps it was because Lionel was still in fear, fearing that his son would encounter another accident, or perhaps it was because the Luther family was too busy.
But Locke didn't care about this - after all, the Luther Group had already covered all of Dio's medical expenses, arranged a VIP ward of the highest standards, and even provided daily meals prepared by top chefs.
And Jonathan said that the dispute between their farm and the insurance company was also interfered with by the Luther Group.
The person in charge of the insurance company simply gave them a large sum of compensation on the grounds of falling objects from a high altitude.
This amount of money is even enough to cover the purchase of crops from Jonathan and Locke's farm for a quarter.
of course
It was just Lionel's kindness, and they couldn't take it for granted.
After all, if Dio continues to eat food prepared by top chefs, his taste buds will become completely picky, and then Locke won't be able to afford it.
So today.
The sun is just right, the breeze is not dry.
Dio stood at the hospital entrance, squinting his eyes at the Kansas sky he had not seen for a long time.
He was wearing a short-sleeved shirt, his blond hair gleaming in the sun, and the wound on his collarbone had long since healed, leaving only a faint scar.
Locke patted his shoulder and said, "Let's go, little bastard, let's go home."
Dio curled his lips, but did not refute as usual, just hummed softly.
In the distance, Jonathan's old pickup truck slowly approached. Clark leaned out of the window and waved excitedly:
"Dio! Mom brought your favorite blueberry pie!"
Dio rolled his eyes, but the corners of his mouth unconsciously raised slightly.
-
The afterglow of dusk shone in front of the wooden house on Kent Farm, and the old pickup truck bumped into the yard on the gravel road.
Martha and Jonathan looked at each other in tacit understanding, and when Dio got out of the car, they held Clark, who wanted to follow, on the left and right.
"Let's go, Clark."
The woman gently but unyieldingly pulled her son's arm and said, "It's time for us to go home."
"?!"
"But I think."
Clark stared at Dio's back eagerly.
"Okay, Clark." Jonathan put his arm around the boy's shoulders. "Your Uncle Locke and Dio need some time alone."
The pickup truck started again and immediately carried the three people towards a farm not far away.
Dio raised an eyebrow: "They are quite sensible."
"Smelly boy." Locke cursed and pushed open the door, "Go take a shower and change your clothes. I'll prepare dinner."
"Okay, Dad." Dio licked his lips, obviously looking forward to it.
So when he came out of the bathroom, wiping his wet blond hair, he smelled the tempting aroma floating throughout the living room.
The table was filled with his favorite dishes——
Slow-roasted beef ribs drizzled with black pepper sauce, a mountain of golden and crispy fried onion rings, and a bowl of steaming creamy corn soup.
"Wow."
Dio whistled, "Dad, you haven't used up the compensation money from last time, have you?"
"A lot."
Locke snorted lightly. Compared to the ten thousand knives, these were just a drop in the bucket.
"Enough of the nonsense." He poured apple juice into two glasses. "Sit down and eat."
The candlelight flickered on the dining table, adding a touch of warmth to the long-lost time alone between father and son.
Dio was cutting ribs when he suddenly said, "Um... medical expenses."
Obviously, he was really concerned about whether the compensation money had been used up.
"The Luther Group paid off." Locke took a sip of juice, "But the little Luther who saved you never showed up again."
Dio's fork made a slight scratching sound on the plate: "Who cares about that brat."
Outside the window, night gradually enveloped the fields of Smallville Town.
Locke looked at his son's quiet profile illuminated by the candlelight, and suddenly realized that this little bastard who was always causing trouble seemed to have grown up a little.
"Dio." Locke put down his cutlery. "About that day in the cornfield."
"Dad." Dio interrupted him, his red eyes flickering strangely in the candlelight, "I discovered something."
"what?"
"World he" Dio's voice was filled with suppressed excitement, "It seems like he can stop time!"
"."
"So how long do you think it will take?"
"1s-3s, right? I think it's quite long anyway."
"Is that so?" Locke couldn't help laughing.
It seems that this guy is not very sensitive to time. After all, the time he can pause is actually only 0.1s.
"Dior."
Locke put down his glass and crossed his hands before his chin.
"Ok?"
The blond boy cut the ribs without even looking up.
"Listen to me," Locke said softly, "You saved that stranger. You knew the danger but still chose to protect the weak. This is rare and precious."
The red pupils flickered slightly, and the corners of Dio's mouth unconsciously rose.
"but."
Locke abruptly changed the subject, "I must tell you what true courage is." "Huh?" Dio's smile froze on his face.
"What do you mean, old man? Didn't a miracle happen in the end? Didn't we all survive?"
"But Dio."
Walking to his son's side, Locke placed his big hand on Dio's shoulder, his voice suddenly choking:
"As a father, I don't want you to have that kind of courage."
"I'm sorry for teaching you these difficult things at such a young age."
“Let’s talk about miracles first.”
"A so-called miracle can only be established if it is possible and has sufficient strength."
"I hope you're not at the end of your rope. Don't pin your hopes on these ethereal things."
"After all, a student who never listens to lectures or does his homework will only fail, even if he musters up the courage to take an exam."
The wind outside the window suddenly stopped.
Dio stared at his distorted reflection in the apple juice, the scar on his collarbone and the star birthmark feeling faintly hot.
He remembered the deadly red light in the cornfield, Lex's terrified scream, and his own boiling, almost reckless fighting spirit at that moment.
Dio was silent for a long time.
Finally, he raised his head, his red eyes flashing with a complex light: "So you're saying that I should abandon that person?"
"Do not."
Locke shook his head slightly. "What I mean is, next time you encounter a situation like this, first ensure the safety of yourself and those around you, and then find the most reliable way to rescue them. That's what will allow me to watch you grow up with peace of mind."
"courage!"
".It's so annoying."
Dio turned his face away, his blond hair falling to hide his expression. "Next time I will remember to recite the great principles you taught me before saving anyone."
Chuckling, Locke rubbed his son's soft blond hair:
"This is my son. Now."
He turned and took out a small, steaming plate from the oven. "Try this, my new spicy apple pie."
"Spicy?!" Dio's disgusted expression was particularly vivid under the candlelight. "Old Deng, have your taste buds finally gone bad?"
"You little bastard."
"Never mind, let's do it tonight." Locke raised his glass, "To celebrate your discharge."
Dio grinned, revealing his sharp fangs. "To you for escaping death?"
"To the family reunion," Locke corrected.
The laughter of father and son echoed in the night sky of the farm.
In the distance, a meteor streaked across the sky, this time it was pure gold, just like Dior's hair shining in the sun.
-
In the blink of an eye, summer vacation is coming to an end.
Locke returned from the fields with Clark and Dio. The heavy ears of wheat indicated that the harvest season was coming.
That's right, even Dio was forced to join the labor force, sweating in the wheat fields every day -
After all, a substitute is such a useful thing, it would be a waste not to use it to harvest oats.
Of course, Clark too.
With his super body, it would be a waste not to use it to harvest oats.
But Clark was quite happy. After all, this gave him a reason to become a permanent resident of the Locke family, allowing him to stick to Dio all day long, like a piece of sticky candy that couldn't be thrown away.
In this regard, Dior's evaluation is -
"This guy is like my second body double. Once you get attached to him, you can't get rid of him. He even grows legs and chases after you!"
Looking at the two teenagers fighting in the wheat pile, Locke held his forehead and said, "Okay, you two, stop making trouble."
"Advanced Home"
"Ok?"
The door is not closed?
Locke raised his hand to stop the two children behind him, his eyes sharp.
The Star Platinum loomed behind him.
"Stand behind me."
After exchanging a glance with Clark, Dio stopped in tacit understanding.
Locke slowly walked forward and gently pushed the door open.
The first thing that hits your nose is a rich meaty aroma.
Locke was very familiar with this smell.
This is Dior's treasured premium eye steak, a top-quality steak that is only grilled on special holidays.
Are you secretly hungry and can't help but cook a meal for yourself?
"Haha. Hahaha!"
A burst of hearty laughter came from the living room.
Too embarrassing!
What can be tolerated by scholars?
"boom!"
Locke shoved the door wide open.
What caught my eye was a man with three golden donuts on his head. He was sitting on the sofa, chewing steak and watching TV happily.
Hearing the noise, the man actually turned his head, without any embarrassment, and even grinned brightly:
"Hey! Long time no see—"
"Grandpa Locke!"
"Oh? There's also spicy sauce in the cafeteria, hahahaha, you too."
"Ciao~"
