Chapter 43 Logan Pays Back the Money
Chapter 43 Logan Pays Back the Money (Seeking Monthly Tickets and Recommendations)
Larry spent two hours that afternoon visiting four or five betting firms, but they either restricted trading positions or restricted both positions and the stocks that could be purchased.
With the time already past 3 p.m., Larry could only find a coffee shop at random and spend 75 cents to buy a large earthenware pot of coffee to take back to his colleagues in the sales department.
When Larry returned to the branch office, the afternoon session had already closed. Several colleagues saw that Larry had brought back coffee, and they all took their own cups and poured themselves a cup of coffee.
This clay pot coffee is enough for 15 people, but if you use smaller cups, it can be enough for 20 people.
After you finish your coffee, return the clay pot and you can get your 15-cent deposit back.
While drinking coffee, Larry noticed that Tom and Samuel had long faces, clearly having received a lot of scolding in the two hours Larry had been gone.
Larry also said he couldn't help with this.
Afterwards, the front desk manager called a small meeting with the staff to review performance and make arrangements for some work after the holiday.
It wasn't until 5:30 PM that they announced everyone could leave work.
Larry was somewhat disheartened, and without properly putting on his coat, he walked out of Paine Weber Securities Company with his coat open.
As soon as Larry stepped out the door, he was surprised to see red-haired Logan and Italian lad Marco De Niro standing under the eaves of a bar across the street, smiling at him.
Larry found it slightly strange, crossed the street to the other side, and asked in surprise, "What are you doing here?"
Logan smiled and pointed at Marco, saying, "He's going to New Bedford next week and he's planning to treat us to a meal. Who knows when we'll see each other again?"
Larry turned to look at Marco, the Italian-American lad who hadn't been very noticeable in the sales department, and he smiled sheepishly.
"Yes, Larry. I've always felt we should stay friends!"
Larry nodded.
Logan turned to Larry and asked, "I heard you've become a tape announcer too? Then tonight's dinner will be a gathering of three generations of tape announcers from Paine Webber Securities!"
The three of them burst into laughter.
After turning two street corners, the three of them found a small Italian restaurant and had dinner together.
At that time in Boston, USA, the so-called "treating someone to a meal" was actually still a split-the-bill system, except that the host was responsible for buying beer or fruit wine.
Marco bought fruit wine because his Italian-American friends didn't like barley beer, which was popular on the East Coast at the time.
The three raised their glasses to each other, exchanged blessings, drank the fruit wine, and began to eat and chat.
Marco explained his family's moving plans. To accommodate his move to the new brokerage as a trader, his parents decided to move with him to New Bedford. Speaking of his family's decision, Marco blushed slightly, as if he felt ashamed that his parents still needed to move with him at his age.
Larry comforted him, saying that he was in a similar situation to Larry, but he was living alone now. He added that living alone wasn't necessarily a good thing, in fact...
Larry glanced at their intense gazes and continued, "Actually, it's pretty good. I can live however I want, and nobody cares!"
Logan laughed loudly at Marco, who blushed and quickly took another sip of fruit wine to cover his embarrassment.
After a while, the conversation turned to Logan, who said he might go to England with Mr. Hemings next month to manage some foreign trade business. Eventually, the topic turned to Larry.
Logan looked at Larry, carefully choosing his words. He didn't ask Larry about his new deal, but instead subtly inquired, "Do you still gamble every now and then?"
Everyone at Paine Weber Securities knew about Larry's trip to the betting company, but Marco didn't care and just turned to look at Larry.
Larry sighed. "They won't do business with me there anymore. They think I'm too noisy and want me to go somewhere else. I'm really frustrated. I go to this betting company often, and it's very close to the company. I have to find another betting company."
Upon hearing this, Logan smiled and asked, "Did you go? I don't think you'd look down on those small betting shops, would you?"
“Yeah! The smaller betting companies have too many restrictions. They only allow a maximum of 20 shares to be traded. It’s not very exciting!” Larry complained.
Logan nodded, counting on his fingers as he analyzed for Larry, "Don't be fooled by the dozens of betting firms in Boston; only two can truly grow their businesses to a large scale: Pyramid and Metropolitan. The others all restrict their clients' trading positions."
"Oh? Is that so?" Larry's expression immediately turned serious upon hearing this news.
“Yes, brother.” Logan nodded, then pointed north and said, “There are three big businesses on Freedom Avenue. Although they also restrict the size of transactions, they can relax the limit to 500 shares for more active large-cap stocks. Those are the second-best betting companies after Metropolis and Pyramid. You can go there too.”
Larry nodded, then shook his head. "Freedom Avenue is a full mile from the company; it's too far to go there. What was the name of that biggest bet you just mentioned?"
“Metropolitan, that’s the biggest betting company in the city. They have a huge business and don’t limit the size of transactions!” Logan said confidently.
“Then I’ll go there!” Larry said decisively.
Marco, who hadn't said much until now, suddenly interjected, "No! Don't go there!"
Logan and Larry stared at Marco in astonishment, only to see him say solemnly, "I heard that the owner there is a real mob boss with connections everywhere. He can open a gambling den in the most bustling area of the city and make the police turn a blind eye. He has a lot of power."
As he spoke, Marco turned to Larry and said, “If you want to pay them back, that’s fine with me. But if you can make money, then you have to be careful. They’re ruthless, with all sorts of tricks, both overt and covert. If they realize you’ve made them spend too much, then you’ll be in trouble.”
After he finished speaking, Larry and Logan both fell silent.
Ultimately, Larry decided to take Marco's advice and try his luck at the smaller betting shops on Liberty Avenue. At worst, he would just look for more reliable opportunities or buy stocks and hold them for a few more days, so he wouldn't have to take too much time off work.
After dinner, the three of them took out their money, 55 cents each. Marco took the money to the restaurant owner to pay the bill.
After Marco left, Logan took out $20 and secretly slipped it into Larry's coat pocket, saying in a low voice, "This is the $20 you borrowed from me. I've received my salary, so I'm returning it to you."
“No need, Logan. You’ve done me a huge favor, I don’t want the $20 loan,” Larry quickly refused.
But Logan's expression was serious. "Business is business, and a loan is a loan. If you really think I'm being generous, just come to me for more of these kinds of jobs in the future." As he spoke, he stuffed the money into Larry's pocket without further ado.
Larry looked at Logan, nodded, and said, "No problem."
