Chapter 13 Little Captain
Chapter 13 Little Captain (Part 1)
Carax's convoy, with its open-top steel trains packed with people, leisurely traveled through the vast, desolate landscape of Chemos.
A clear, radiation-free sandstorm-free day was not a common occurrence in the wasteland of Chemos.
Thanks to Fugrim's governance, many machines capable of absorbing radiation concentrations were deployed near Karax.
Once the radiation level drops to a certain limit in a few more days, trees can be replanted on this wasteland to block wind and sand and prevent dust from rising.
Then, railways and highways can be built, thus connecting the whole world.
But for now, they can only rely on these rudimentary machines to get around.
As one of the shelters not far from Carax, the clear, windless days are the perfect time for people to evacuate.
The entire transfer team consisted of a large and diverse group of people, some quite unusual.
These shelters, nearly crushed by the harsh environment, almost resigned themselves to the fate of these radiation-mutated beings with a sense of relief, as if shedding a burden.
After all, this group of deformed mutants would be a burden anywhere.
Due to the radiation from the wasteland, very few of them could even be considered "human."
They had long since accepted their fate.
Living in this hopeless hell, death is a kind of relief.
But they did not die.
In their endless confusion and despair, they received guidance from God.
A goddess named Fugrim descended.
She brought hope to them all.
hope.
A remedy that can keep people alive.
Even though Fugrim repeatedly emphasized that she was not a god, in the eyes of these people who had lost everything, she was no different from the legendary god who could save mankind.
She gave them the possibility of survival.
And the anticipation for the future.
"Brother, the goddess said that beyond the sky is the universe, and the ground is actually a sphere. Won't we fall down?"
Two young children, a boy and a girl, were sitting cross-legged in the car, talking.
They were twin orphans, and no one knew who their parents were.
Even though neither of them had any deformities and both had pale but regular faces, they were still abandoned.
Until the arrival of the goddess.
She led them to the dwelling place of God, Carax.
The goddess said that there, not only would no one force them to work, but sick people would not be thrown outside; instead, they would be sent to a place called "hospital".
The hospital is amazing.
As long as you stay in the hospital, you will get better and you won't die.
And she even brought them candy!
candy!
It was a delicious thing, and the goddess even told them that the taste was called sweet.
She also promised the children that in Carax, someone would take care of them, the orphans, and they would have lots and lots of candy to eat and lots and lots of interesting stories to tell them.
Moreover, the people there would never whip them.
That's enough, that's good enough.
"Brother, brother!"
"The goddess also said that the spaceship can take us to the sky, but what is a spaceship?"
The girl still remembered the story that the approachable, tall deity had told them.
A spaceship, that's a kind of vessel, like a bird that can soar through the sky?
That's what the goddess said at the time.
But what is a bird?
The goddess also said that birds are winged animals that can fly in the sky.
So, Uncle Wenz is actually a bird.
But he was a "mutant hybrid," and no one wanted to get close to him, saying that his hands had turned into wings because he had secretly learned "dark magic." Are wings really a good thing?
Children always have endless questions.
"Children, what are you talking about?"
She only shut her mouth and curled up when the officer escorting their group came closer.
His older brother, who was very precocious, stood up and bowed respectfully to the officer.
"I'm sorry, sir, we'll shut up now."
The other party was the leader of this team, and the other goddess's messengers all called him "commander".
His appearance alone reveals that he has a handsome face without any changes, and his jet-black hair stands in stark contrast to the sparse hair of his other uncles.
"Don't be afraid, I was just asking casually."
The man smiled.
The goddess's messengers are always smiling.
This is an expression that was rarely seen before.
When other adults encountered them, they mostly wore stern faces and disdainfully sprinkled some starch crumbs on them as they begged.
That's considered a good situation. Most of the time, they just yell at them to get lost, and some with bad tempers even kick them away.
"Also, you don't need to call me sir, just call me Brother Casca."
Perhaps seeing that Casca wasn't angry, the younger sister mustered up her courage and asked after a moment of preparation.
"Brother Nacasga, do you know what a spaceship is?"
"A spaceship!"
Casca sat down beside the children, pondering how to phrase it: “The spaceship is like the car you’re sitting in, but faster, bigger, and it can fly.”
"At that time, we will be able to travel around the world in our spaceships and help children like you who are suffering, without fear of being hindered by storms and radiation."
"Yay! Spaceship! I want to fly a spaceship!"
A strange light shone in the girl's eyes.
If she can fly into the sky in her spaceship, she will definitely sprinkle candy on the children below so that they can also experience the taste of sweetness.
“You will be able to fly it, little one,” Casca replied with a smile. “When you grow up, you can become a captain and fly a spaceship.”
Kasga smiled and patted the girl's head, then turned to the silent boy beside her.
"Little friend, what about you?"
What do you want to be in the future?
"Sir, the reconnaissance team's oracle detection results show that dozens of unknown signals are approaching the convoy at high speed from the right side. It is speculated that they are likely scavengers coming to plunder."
As the group chatted, a patrol officer quickly approached them.
"Okay. I knew they would come."
Casca stood up and dusted himself off.
"Have the reconnaissance team retreat first, and notify the first and second fire support teams to stand by."
"All guards from Groups One to Four, follow me on the motorcycles to engage in battle. Group Five, prepare to come to the rescue if the situation becomes critical.
It's not surprising that scavengers would target them.
Meat, slaves.
These mutants may have been exposed to some radiation, but they are still flesh and blood and can still work.
For the Surfars living in the terrifying wasteland, this was the most delicious feast.
Even if there is no harvest, the dead companions can still be eaten.
This is how they survive in the wasteland.
"The big bad guys are coming!"
The two children clung to the metal railing of the car, looking at the dust and smoke rising in the distance.
