Chapter 6 Confrontation
Jiang Han was leading his men in a search for Wu Zimian when suddenly several riders on horseback came galloping towards them from afar.
"Jiang Xiaoqi! We've found Wu the traitor! But he's being protected by his servants, brothers, we can't break through!"
Jiang Han was a little puzzled. With so many people, how could they not handle a few dozen servants?
But no matter what, we must kill Wu Zimian today. If he gets away, the consequences will be unimaginable!
Jiang Han mounted his horse and waved to Dong Erzhu and Hei Zi: "Let's go!"
The three men spurred their horses and galloped straight toward the army formation.
When Jiang Han arrived at the front of the battlefield, the scene before him made him frown.
The military formation before them was impenetrable, with rows of long shields standing in perfect unison, effectively blocking all attacks.
The spears protruding from the gaps were still stained with blood, and the tips of the spears were still covered with tattered cloth, clearly indicating that they had taken many lives.
To make matters worse, this impenetrable fortress was stuck at a narrow passage, with deep trenches on both sides and the front and back passages completely blocked by shield walls.
The riotous soldiers were crammed into the narrow passage, with shield walls and spears in front of them and their own men pushing and shoving them from behind, unable to move forward or backward.
"Lord Jiang, you've finally arrived! This turtle shell is really tough to crack; we've lost dozens of brothers."
Upon seeing Jiang Han arrive, a man holding a Kaiyuan bow quickly stepped forward to report the situation.
Jiang Han squinted, carefully examining the military formation before him. He was also unfamiliar with this turtling tactic.
He took the Kaiyuan Bow from the soldier, put all his strength into it, drew the bow, nocked an arrow, and fired a tentative shot at the army formation.
But the military formation in front of them was perfectly aligned, with the swallowtail shields arranged in neat rows, as tight as the scales of a giant beast, leaving almost no gaps.
The swordsman and shieldman easily deflected Jiang Han's arrow with a gentle nudge of his leather-covered shield, leaving only a white dot on the shield.
Jiang Han's heart sank. This turtle shell was really difficult to break through head-on, and the surrounding terrain was not suitable for a large-scale charge.
But today, he had to crack this tough nut no matter what. Jiang Han's eyes flashed with a fierce light as he turned to Dong Erzhu and shouted sternly:
"Zhu Zi! Go and bring the Tiger Crouching Cannon over here. I'm going to see just how many shots this turtle shell can withstand today!"
Dong Erzhu nodded repeatedly in response, then called over several soldiers and hurriedly headed towards the back of the camp to drag the artillery vehicle over.
Seeing that there was no hope of breaking through in a short time, Jiang Han decided to suspend the attack and instead besiege the enemy formation, making sure that no one had a chance to escape.
Meanwhile, Wu Zimian's army on the opposite side remained completely still, stubbornly holding their ground to conserve energy and arrows.
The battlefield was briefly locked in a stalemate.
Jiang Han wasn't in a hurry anyway. He plopped down on a nearby mound of earth, looking completely relaxed.
Jiang Han knew very well that it was pointless to sacrifice lives now. Once the artillery arrived, even steel plates could be blasted open. These people were his future team, and he couldn't let them die in vain.
Just as Jiang Han was waiting for the artillery, he suddenly caught a glimpse of a fast horse coming from the flank in the distance.
The cavalry, single-minded and undeterred, charged straight at Wu Zimian's army, kicking up clouds of dust.
Upon seeing this, Hei Zi suddenly sprang to his feet, his face turning ashen: "Which bastard dares to disobey military orders?"
Jiang Han, standing to the side, frowned, a sense of foreboding rising in his heart. His intuition told him that something was wrong with these cavalrymen.
So he craned his neck, squinted, and looked closely at the cavalryman charging towards him in the distance.
The cavalryman was wearing a plum blossom-patterned cloth armor, a six-lobed bright iron helmet, and fine iron ring armbands—equipment typically reserved for Wu Zimian's elite guards.
Jiang Han's pupils contracted sharply, sensing something was wrong:
"Oh no, it's Wu Zimian's henchmen! They're trying to charge!"
Jiang Han hurriedly waved behind him, his voice urgent: "Quick! Archers! All those with bows, come up here!"
At his command, twenty or thirty archers swiftly emerged from the crowd, forming two rows behind Jiang Han. "See that cavalryman charging in?"
Jiang Han didn't waste any words, pointing to the fast horse galloping through the dust not far away:
"Stop him, and you'll be rewarded with fifty taels of silver!"
Upon hearing this, the archers' eyes lit up, and the bowstrings hummed as dozens of arrows shot straight at the cavalry.
But the cavalry was too fast, and in the blink of an eye, they had already widened the distance considerably.
This volley of arrows rained down, yet not a single person hit their target; some even nearly struck their own men.
The archers looked at each other, shook their heads, and looked helpless.
Hei Zi was so angry that he stomped his feet, but he was helpless at the moment and could only watch the cavalry gallop towards Wu Zimian's army formation.
Just when they were at their wits' end, the soldier who had been holding the Kaiyuan Bow suddenly stepped forward and said loudly:
"My lord, my name is Shao Yong, and I am willing to give it a try!"
Jiang Han didn't say much, he just nodded slightly.
With permission granted, Shao Yong took a deep breath, steadily drew back the bowstring, and fixed his eagle-like gaze on the galloping cavalry in the distance.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! Three arrows shot out like meteors, heading straight for their target.
However, the cavalrymen opposite were clearly no ordinary men. Upon hearing the whooshing sound, he instinctively lowered his center of gravity, grabbed the horse's neck with both hands, pressed his body tightly against the horse's back, and his whole body suddenly curled up like a snake.
Arrows pierced the air, passing overhead one after another.
He easily dodged this barrage of arrows.
These warriors may not understand the principle of reducing the target area, but their years of accumulated combat experience enable them to make the right choice in the blink of an eye.
Seeing that the first volley of arrows missed, Shao Yong remained calm, took out three more arrows from his quiver, and drew his bow again.
This time, he did not rush to launch, but instead chose to lower the arrowhead and readjust the angle.
whoosh-
The first arrow was aimed directly at the cavalryman's chest; a few breaths later, two more arrows were shot out at low altitude, aiming for a palm's width above the horse's back.
"What a master!" Jiang Han, who was standing to the side, nodded repeatedly as he witnessed Shao Yong's precise adjustments.
The accuracy and strategy behind Shao Yong's three arrows were both top-notch.
His first arrow was aimed at the cavalryman's chest, in order to force him to duck and avoid the attack.
The next two arrows fired at low altitude were Shao Yong's prediction; he was deliberately waiting for the cavalryman to make a dodging move.
In this way, as long as the cavalryman tries to crouch down and stick close to the horse's back to avoid the arrows, he will surely be shot dead on the spot by Shao Yong!
As expected, things turned out exactly as Shao Yong had predicted.
The sound of arrows cutting through the air rang out, and the cavalryman's ears twitched slightly. He leaned forward again, pressing himself tightly against the horse's back, trying to dodge the arrows.
The first arrow grazed his back, but the next two arrows went straight for his armpits!
There was neither cloth armor to cover him nor iron plates to protect him; it was the weakest point in his overall defense.
At the critical moment of life and death, the cavalryman gritted his teeth, pulled hard on the reins, hooked his feet tightly on the stirrups, and squeezed his legs tightly against the horse's belly, turning half of his body to the side.
The cavalryman's body was half-hanging upside down on the side of his horse, his helmet almost touching the ground, and his whole body was pressed tightly against the side of his warhorse like a gecko.
He tightly protected the open area under his armpits, turning his back armor towards the arrows.
The iron plates on his back and the breastplate flashed with a cold light. In that instant, he actually decided to use his armor to withstand Shao Yong's arrows head-on!
