Chapter 80 Kru Kru
"What are you warning me about?" Nemus asked immediately after hearing this, "Your Excellency the Bishop?"
Nems was fairly certain that the priest who came to greet him and waited outside the door was the head of the town of Wagtail.
He looked refined and gentle, in his thirties, with slightly graying short black hair, wearing glasses, and dressed in a simple priest's robe.
“Of course not!” The bishop smiled and shook his head.
"I'm just reminding you of the rules of survival in Tailtail Town." The bishop looked at Nemus and pointed seriously to a black crack between the buildings, continuing his explanation: "So, there are cracks around the buildings in Tailtail Town."
“We need to be careful not to stand near the crack, otherwise if the whale’s tail swings even slightly, it could be swallowed by the crack.”
As he spoke, the bishop pushed open the door to a room: "This is your office, and also the office of the previous Grand Knight."
"You can look it up and see how the previous Grand Knight died."
“My office is in that building over there. If you have any questions, you can contact me according to the rules and regulations.”
"Oh, by the way, my name is Rhine," the bishop said, before leaving with his men.
Only one young male priest, also wearing glasses, remained somewhat reserved, looking at Nems, and then raised his hand to introduce himself: "Lord Nems, hello, my name is Kru Kru, and I am the priest assigned to you by the church."
"I've just been promoted from trainee priest to full priest, and I currently know four divine spells and six magic spells..." Kru planned to continue introducing which spells he knew.
"Give me the program text you have!" Nemes interrupted Kru Kru's potentially endless introduction.
"I'm sorry, Lord Nair, I tend to talk too much when I'm nervous, please don't blame me!" As he spoke, Kru handed the books in his arms to Nair.
The first book records some basic information about Baiwei Town, as well as the theoretical procedures for some things.
Of course, the reality is far more complex than that.
Nemus then opened the second book, which was the ruling log of the previous Grand Knight.
In other words, it's the record of various things that the other party's accompanying priest keeps.
Naims flipped through it and found many problems.
Many of the church's internal systems are practically useless; most procedures are only used when someone is being blocked.
Normally, as long as the relevant personnel confirm that there are no problems and stamp the document, the result can be obtained immediately without so many procedures.
Furthermore, this is practically an unspoken rule, and almost no one brings it up.
The reason is simple: Baiwei Town is a place where interests flow freely, and there are too many interests to be had here.
Almost every priest and paladin has their own interest group.
A town of 500,000 people, yet it has only about 600 law enforcement officers.
Furthermore, with the booming business environment and the constant flow of people, things become extremely complicated if procedures are required for everything.
Therefore, basically every clergy member has a group of interest groups, each of whom handles their own affairs, and there is even a large group of followers.
They are not a gang or similar entity, but rather a group with vested interests.
In their daily lives, they help the clergy stabilize and maintain order in the city within their respective fields.
They checked and cooperated with other interest groups, thus blocking the interests of other groups.
To get ahead in Baiwei Town, one needs to infiltrate the interest groups surrounding clergy.
Otherwise, no matter how good your products are, you can only sell them at a low price and end up working for free.
"It's just like... Tailtail Town itself." I have to say, the 'reminder' given by Bishop Ryan earlier was really appropriate.
This town is like a church.
It resembles a vast community, where buildings cannot be too high or too close together. These groups essentially divide the entire Tailtail Town, and between these groups are the cracks that sway with the movement of the whale's tail.
Those who flock to Baiwei Town but do not find a place to belong will be swallowed up by these cracks.
"What an interesting social structure." Nemus flipped through the former Grand Knight's log and learned that the former Grand Knight's name was 'Sibin'.
Grand Knight Xibin himself was a local nobleman and had close ties with some minor nobles and caravans. The interest groups surrounding him almost monopolized the flow of many goods in the northern region.
It's fair to say that he profited handsomely from this.
However, the logbook stopped more than ten days ago.
In other words, the Great Knight of Baiwei Town was gone in just over ten days.
"Kru." Nems's voice startled Kru, who seemed to be lost in thought.
“I am here, Lord Nair. I am at your service at any time. I was just…”
"Do you know anything about the former Grand Knight Xibin?" Nemus couldn't help but marvel at the speed at which the church issued its decrees amidst internal strife.
From the moment he decided to come to Baiwei Town to the moment he took office, it was less than half a day in total.
At this rate of efficiency, there was basically no time to gather more intelligence and information about Baiwei Town.
"Grand Knight Sir Bernard, he was discovered by the Inquisition to have connections with some cultists, which is why he fled. I believe he is a disgrace to the clergy, he is..."
"So, he's actually not dead yet?" Nemus raised an eyebrow.
Only after Kru explained did he understand what had happened.
Ultimately, it seems to be his own doing.
He exposed the old pastor's actions, revealing that Op, a former merchant, had been collecting contraband for the pastor.
Most of these contraband items came from a cult that called itself the Floating World Society.
This Floating World Society had a deep connection with the Spanish.
He made the mistake Rhine pointed out: he got too close to certain groups.
So when the whale's tail swings too much, problems naturally arise, and things become difficult to manage.
Faced with the adjudication team, he had no choice but to flee, escaping into the wilderness and hiding his identity.
After hearing about Xibin's deeds, Nemes made a basic judgment about the man.
For steel, the value is approximately eighty.
It's a situation where you can't go up or down.
If you take one step forward and reach a value of ninety, you'll have a chance to break through to the Gold level.
If you take the next step and only reach sixty or seventy, then you basically have no hope of obtaining the Golden Seed in this lifetime, and you won't have so many delusions.
Xibin was unwilling to accept this situation. Since he couldn't get through the normal channels, he decided to take some unorthodox methods.
Then he got involved with the old pastor.
A more accurate way to put it is that it was caught up in the infighting between the land-grabbing faction and the peace-keeping faction.
"But since I suffered such a huge loss, I'm afraid he won't let it go so easily," Nems couldn't help but feel hopeful.
