Chapter 7 Teacher
001 said in a deep voice, "We can't get in touch with the outside world."

The young inspector immediately raised his hand, opened the communication interface on his handheld device, entered the encrypted frequency band, and tried to connect to the field channel. After a few seconds, he shook his head: "External communication is interrupted. The communication equipment signal didn't go out either."

"Temporary backlash from the magnetic field?" The person leaning against the wall raised an eyebrow.

“No,” 001 said calmly, but his eyes became wary. “It’s not an interference wave, it’s a cutoff.”

They all understood what this meant—it wasn't a problem with the environment, but rather some more conscious "thing" that was blocking their contact with the outside world.

"Is the lockdown still in effect?" the young man asked.

"Yes," 001 said calmly. "The magnetic field hasn't expanded, and there's no spatial collapse, which means the outer blockade is still in place. The problem lies with us."

"That delivery vehicle—"

“It’s not necessarily a problem, but we can’t confirm it right now.” 001 said, looking up at An Jing.

She was standing two steps away from the group, her expression calm, as if she hadn't understood what they were saying.

001 glanced at her for a moment without saying a word, then opened another communication channel: "013, 016, what's the situation inside the villa? We've temporarily lost contact with the outside world."

After a brief hissing sound, a familiar deep voice came through the earpiece: "013 received. East side cleared. No new anomalies found."

Immediately afterwards, another person replied: "Report from 016: No abnormal fluctuations in the south wing, test values are normal, still on the way back."

001 let out a soft breath, his expression relaxing slightly, and turned to nod to his companion: "The internal team members are all in good condition."

"Hmm." The person leaning against the wall nodded, turned the device that had just turned off back on, and retested the magnetic field concentration. "The villa now looks like a closed space, but it shouldn't be a trap structure."

"Let's find out why the connection was cut off." 001 kept his eyes fixed ahead and added casually, "This time it might be more troublesome."

"Has this happened before?" the young inspector asked in a low voice.

001 didn't reply, but simply looked up and glanced at the ceiling above, where cracks still remained.

An Jing stood half a step behind them, her hands clasped together in front of her, her eyes fixed on the doorway.

She didn't quite understand their jargon, but she could read their tone of voice.

Tense yet composed, with reason suppressing fear, is the kind of response a well-trained person would have when facing the unknown.

Her mood gradually calmed down.

"Once 013 and 016 come down, let's figure out a way to retreat first." The person leaning against the wall looked at 001.

"Mm." 001 nodded.

About three minutes later, a series of heavy footsteps suddenly came from upstairs in the villa.

pat, pat.

It sounded like the wet, sticky sound of shoes stepping on a wooden floor, or like the struggle of a broken body barely holding on.

The sound grew closer, and a figure slowly appeared from the corner of the second-floor staircase.

A figure stumbled out.

His hair was disheveled, his eyes were red-rimmed, and his face was as pale as a wall. His white shirt was torn in half, with bloodstains on the collar and cuffs. He walked unsteadily, looking as if he had just been pulled out of a pool of blood.

An Jing's eyes widened suddenly.

She recognized the person.

It was her homeroom teacher, Li En.

How can it be?

She clearly remembered that at the moment the magnetic field was first generated, he frantically tried to organize the order, and then he was knocked to the ground by a classmate who was thrown backward. His back hit the wall, and when he fell, he was covered in blood and motionless.

She remembers it clearly; she was standing at the top of the stairs on the second floor when she saw it with her own eyes.

But now, he's still alive?

An Jing's breath hitched, and her mind went blank for a moment.

"Who?" 001's voice exploded in her ears.

Almost the instant Li En stepped out of the corner, he had already raised his gun and pointed it at the approaching person without hesitation.

The man against the wall also took a step forward, raised his left arm, and held a dagger with the safety off.

The young inspector quickly activated the detector on his body, projecting an infrared scan onto the other person to check for any unusual fluctuations.

Li En had just taken a step when he was so frightened by the scene before him that he froze on the spot, his hands instinctively raised high, his face filled with unconcealed terror.

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot! I...I'm a human being! I really am a human being!"

He spoke in a trembling voice, his eyes darting around until he saw An Jing standing behind 001. His voice immediately trembled with tears: "An Jing? It's you? You're still alive? Someone else is still alive?"

An Jing remained frozen in place, not uttering a word.

She didn't dare to answer, unsure whether she should or shouldn't, and could only subconsciously look at 001.

After all, no living being could be trusted within the mysterious magnetic field; she could only trust the judgment of these professionals.

001, however, did not put away his gun, and coldly said, "Don't move. Answer the question. Where did you come from?"

Li En's Adam's apple bobbed, and he answered carefully, his voice low, "I... I've been hiding in the cubicle on the east side of the second floor... I've been hiding there the whole time."

How did you survive?

“I was hiding in that cubicle, and no monsters found me. Then, someone…someone saved me.” Li En’s voice was hoarse. “A guy, very tall and strong, with a deep, muffled voice. He…he cleared out a bunch of monsters from behind, found me, and told me I was in the way and to come down and meet up with you…”

001's eyes flickered slightly.

"013," he whispered into the communication channel, "Did you find a survivor on the east side?"

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the channel, then a familiar, deep voice said, "Found him. He seems to be a teacher. He was scared by me, so I told him to come down on his own."

001 slowly exhaled and nodded slightly.

"Confirm identity."

The man leaning against the wall clicked his tongue softly and put the dagger away; the young inspector nodded and switched the detector back to the main interface.

Only 001 still hasn't put away his gun.

“Stand at a distance,” he said. “Don’t move until you get close to us.”

“Okay, okay… I won’t move…” Li En nodded repeatedly, cold sweat already seeping from his forehead.

He stopped about seven or eight meters away from the three of them, leaning against the wall. His face was still pale, but he had at least calmed down a bit.

He glanced at An Jing several times, his eyes reddening as if he were about to cry: "I really thought you were all... all gone... that scene was too..."

"Stop talking." 001 interrupted him, her tone devoid of any emotion.

He doesn't need a survivor to have an emotional breakdown.

An Jing opened her mouth, but no sound came out.

She felt as if her throat was blocked by dust, and she couldn't say a word.

The teacher is still alive, which should be a good thing. But her first reaction wasn't "That's great," but rather—"This isn't right."

She couldn't pinpoint what was wrong, but her intuition told her:

Li En wasn't a fake; he really did look like her teacher.

But his survival seems to have been deliberately avoided.

It went so well.

It's strangely magical.

She lowered her head, her hand secretly gripping the hem of her clothes.
