Chapter 37 Li Wushou, pay back the money!
City God Temple
Thanks to the overwhelming divine power displayed by the City God during his examination of Li Wushou last night, the incense offerings are extremely prosperous today, with a continuous stream of people coming to burn incense early in the morning.
The old man who patted Li Wushou on the shoulder last time was also among them, excitedly discussing the City God's power last night with his companions in the crowd.
A gasp suddenly rang out from the crowd:
"Look! Horses are flying in the sky!"
The old man quickly looked up and immediately saw a black horse leaping into the air from the back hall of the City God Temple.
The horse galloped through the air, passing over everyone's heads, heading towards the south of the city!
The old man glanced quickly and saw a figure in a blue robe sitting on the horse. He immediately recognized it as the robe of the high priest.
However, this figure was different from the old and gloomy Xiao Panshan of the past; he appeared extremely young and full of vigor.
The old man, realizing what was happening, quickly connected the scene to the grand assessment conducted by the City God the previous night.
Then he shouted loudly to the people around him, "This is the new High Priest Li Wushou!"
"Wow~"
The crowd erupted in commotion, all looking up in surprise. But the horse galloped so fast that by the time they could get a better look, it had vanished without a trace. Those who hadn't seen its true form were filled with regret.
The old man proudly introduced the appearance of High Priest Li Wushou to the people around him, but as he introduced him, the strangeness in his heart grew stronger. Why did this High Priest Li Wushou look so much like a boy from the South City that he had met before?
During the City God's assessment last night, it was mentioned that the new High Priest was from the southern part of the city!
South City Kid?
Could it be?
Impossible! What makes that kid so special?
"I never knew incense ash could have such a wonderful use!"
Riding his horse at full gallop, Li Wushou couldn't help but marvel at the ingenious combination of Yin-refining techniques and incense ash!
According to Xiao Panshan, the horse made from incense ash carries the power of the incense offerings from the City God Temple.
The pure Yin energy obtained through the priest's Yin-refining technique can propel the horse, but it becomes quite strenuous during a gallop. Therefore, it is generally driven by the Yin spirits enslaved by the priest's Yin-refining technique.
In a flash of inspiration, Li Wushou placed the shadowy figure inside, and it seemed to be working extremely well. Riding on the shadowy figure was far more palatable to Li Wushou than enslaving a long-tongued ghost woman on it!
As he rushed along, countless people turned to look at him, and in the blink of an eye, Li Wushou arrived at the low hill in the south of the city.
The hill was more lively today, with two or three people gathered in front of each of the dozen or so wooden houses. They naturally knew about the City God's actions last night, but they still couldn't quite believe that the protagonist of last night was really that crazy Li Wushou who lived on the hill.
Because of their past estrangement, no one dared to go to the Three Immortals Pavilion to inquire.
Just then, a gentle breeze swept across the sky, and a black streak of light landed in front of the Three Immortals Pavilion. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a black steed.
A young man in a green robe sat atop the horse, a smile on his face. When everyone peered over, they recognized him as Li Wushou.
"Is it really Li Wushou?"
"He really became a high priest?"
"Can a madman become a high priest?"
Aunt Niu, whom Li Wushou had been trying so hard to curry favor with, stood at her doorstep with her son, Niu Dan, their faces full of hesitation. Now that Li Wushou was a high priest, should he send his son over to play with him?
Li Wushou mentioned several times that Chen Gou'er wanted to play with his child, but he had repeatedly told his son to refuse.
In her mind, it was clearly Li Wushou who wanted to play with her son and the others; she didn't trust her son to play with a madman.
But things are different now!
The neighbors on the hill had different thoughts, but Li Wushou had no time to care.
He flipped off the horse and landed back behind him. The black horse slowly transformed into a palm-sized stone statue made of incense ash, which landed outside the gate of the Three Immortals Pavilion, just like the stone lions outside the gate of a wealthy family's house.
Li Wushou entered the courtyard, took out three roast chickens from his pocket, and shouted into the Three Immortals Hall: "Old beggar, Chen Gou'er, come and see what delicious food the High Priest has brought you!"
The onlookers felt a chill run down their spines, and then returned home.
This Li Wushou seems to have truly mastered the City God's magic, but he is still a madman.
Aunt Niu slapped herself hard across the face, then dragged Niu Dan home. She realized she had really lost her heart, actually having the idea of getting her son to get along with the madman.
Three Immortals Pavilion
The old beggar covered his ears, his mind buzzing all night.
Chen Gou'er had been talking about Li Wushou all night since he saw him leave under the moonlight.
"Li Wushou is back!"
Chen Gou'er suddenly jumped out of bed and ran outside in surprise.
Seeing the roast chicken in Li Wushou's hand, they were so happy that their eyes narrowed. The three of them sat around the three-legged square table in the main room, each with a chicken, and ate their breakfast!
During this time, Chen Gou'er was still resentful about Li Wushou leaving him while he was asleep and flying away the night before.
Li Wushou had no choice but to bring up the City Goddess and tell Chen Gou'er that he was riding a flying horse this time and would take Chen Gou'er flying several times later, which finally stopped Chen Gou'er from complaining.
But Li Wushou immediately regretted it!
Chen Gou'er quickly devoured the roast chicken in his hand and then started clamoring to ride a flying horse!
The old beggar picked at his ear, his expression pained; he had been disturbed all night. He turned to Li Wushou and said:
"You two ride on, I'm going to the Blood Buddha Temple to check things out!"
"Um... are they already ripe?"
The old beggar and Chen Gou'er both nodded.
Helpless, Li Wushou finished his roast chicken and went outside. He pointed to the incense-ash horse at the door and cast the shadow back into it. The black horse reared up again, and Chen Gou'er excitedly jumped on it.
"You take Chen Gou'er flying for a while, I'm going back to rest first!"
Without waiting to see if the shadowy figure understood, Li Wushou returned to the house. He hadn't slept all night and was extremely tired.
The old beggar finished his last bite of roast chicken, then turned and went out.
After an unknown amount of time, a loud shout suddenly came from outside the door.
"Li Wushou!"
Li Wushou was startled awake from his dream. The old beggar and Chen Gou'er were peering out the small window. When they saw who it was, they both turned to look at Li Wushou with strange smiles on their faces.
"Who?"
Li Wushou asked in a daze, then suddenly sat up in bed!
"Why is Tiger Girl here?"
"Li Wushou, I'll count to three. If you don't open the door, I'll tear down your dilapidated house!"
Another impatient voice came from outside the courtyard. Li Wushou felt a chill run down his spine and quickly opened the door and went out.
Looking closely, a tall woman stood outside the door. Unlike the other residents of the southern city, she did not have any other spiritual eyes on her face.
Dressed in a black, close-fitting outfit, her hair simply tied back, without much adornment, yet possessing a certain untamed, heroic spirit, the woman raised an eyebrow at Li Wushou, who had opened the door, and angrily rebuked him:
"Li Wushou, pay me back!"
