Chapter 95 The Nailed Bones
We ate our New Year's Eve dinner at my grandparents' house.

Su Miaoyi lives here with her uncle and aunt.

The other uncles and maternal uncles also have houses in the village.

After midnight, everyone went home.

Su Miaoyi and the others were also getting ready to rest.

Ge Yu and Su Miaoyi shared a room, while Cheng Yong and Cheng Jue shared a room.

They hadn't slept for more than a few hours, and before dawn, they were all up again.

On the first day of the Lunar New Year, people visit each other to exchange New Year's greetings.

Su Miaoyi never went out to pray, but every year she would get up early with them, eat breakfast, and wait for them to leave before going back to sleep for a while.

However, this year she didn't sleep. Instead, she wrapped herself in a cotton-padded coat, sat by the stove, and roasted sweet potatoes.

By the time they returned from visiting their neighbors, the sweet potatoes were almost done roasting.

Su Miaoyi set aside some for her uncle, aunt, and Cheng Jue, and distributed the rest among the children.

We ate lunch together again.

After lunch, Su Miaoyi played with the children for a while, but she was really sleepy, so she went back to her room to sleep.

I don’t know how long I slept.

I just kept hearing people chatting outside, and the sounds of children playing.

After a long time, it finally quieted down.

But Cheng Jue woke her up again.

"Sister, sister." Cheng Jue shook her arm.

Su Miaoyi opened her eyes, looked at him, then closed them again: "What's wrong?"

"Something happened next door." Cheng Jue didn't tell her directly what happened, worried that she wasn't fully awake yet and would be startled.

"Next door?" Su Miaoyi thought for a moment with her eyes closed. "Isn't no one living next door? It's been almost seven or eight years since anyone lived there."

“Those kids just ran into someone’s yard to have a snowball fight,” Cheng Jue said. “Then they fell into someone’s cellar.”

Su Miaoyi opened her eyes: "Is everyone alright?"

Cheng Jue pulled her up immediately: "After she fell in, the other children cried and shouted, and the adults rushed over. They quickly found a ladder, went down into the cellar, and brought the child up. She's probably not seriously injured, but her arm seems to be broken, so she was taken to the hospital."

"Whose is it?" Su Miaoyi asked.

“My second uncle’s grandson,” Cheng Jue said.

Su Miaoyi rubbed her eyes: "It's the Lunar New Year."

“There’s something else very serious,” Cheng Jue said.

"What?" Su Miaoyi wrapped the blanket tighter around herself.

No one lives here permanently, so even though there's firewood and heating, it's still cold.

"A skeleton was found in the cellar," Cheng Jue said.

Su Miaoyi looked at him, her eyes wide.

"My second uncle went down into the cellar to get the child and saw it. He was terrified," Cheng Jue said.

Su Miaoyi threw back the covers, grabbed her down jacket, and put it on: "Did you call the police?"

"I've reported it." Cheng Jue looked at her. "What are you going to do there?"

"I'll go check on the skeleton," Su Miaoyi said.

Cheng Jue was still looking at her.

Su Miaoyi raised her hand and tapped his head: "Don't ask too many questions."

Cheng Jue didn't ask, but still said, "It's not just our relatives who are outside; many people from the village have come too. How are you going to go see them? You'll definitely be stopped, and how are you going to explain it?"

Su Miaoyi paused for a moment.

Cheng Jue continued to look at her.

Su Miaoyi put on her clothes and shoes: "Let's go outside and take a look first."

Cheng Jue and the other two went out.

No one has lived next door for seven or eight years.

Some of the grass in the yard was taller than a person, but it was winter, so it was dry and weighed down by snow.

The main house looks like it's about to collapse.

I heard that a bachelor used to live here, and after he passed away, the house was abandoned.

The outside was indeed full of onlookers.

On the courtyard wall of his house, and also on the door of the neighbor's house.

The house two doors down is full of people. People who love watching a good show all their lives.

When Su Miaoyi went out, a police car happened to be parked at the door next door.

The town's police station is only one kilometer away from Fuxiang Village, so they can arrive very quickly.

Su Miaoyi walked to the gate of the neighboring courtyard and looked inside.

The police officers went down the cellar ladder first, and then came back up after a while.

Several police officers were talking to each other near the cellar.

Just as Su Miaoyi was about to walk forward, Ge Yu suddenly grabbed her.

He took her home.

"Stop looking at it, it's bad luck during the New Year."

“Auntie, there are no taboos,” Su Miaoyi said.

"Then don't bother looking. I heard from your second uncle that it's really scary inside. They say it's some kind of evil magic that nailed people to the cellar," Ge Yu said.

Su Miaoyi looked at her.

“Your second uncle said they were all black nails this long,” Ge Yu gestured, “several of them, which pinned people to the ground.”

Su Miaoyi's eyebrows twitched slightly.

Why does this sound somewhat familiar?

“I don’t even know how long it’s been, the people have all turned to bones,” Ge Yu said. “Don’t go and join the fun, these dead people are all vengeful spirits, they’ll possess you.”

“Auntie, don’t scare yourself,” Su Miaoyi said. “Even if it really is a vengeful spirit, there’s a cause for every grievance, and it has nothing to do with us.”

Ge Yu said, "That's true. But seeing how frightened your second uncle was, my heart is pounding too. Let's hurry back to the old town."

"His second uncle took the car," Cheng Yong said as he walked in. "We'll see in a bit, and if we can get back, we'll hitch a ride with whoever's car we can."

“Okay,” Ge Yu said.

Su Miaoyi didn't go out again, but sent a message to Zhuang Yanzheng.

In this kind of situation, the local police station should report it to the branch office.

Even if the branch office came, she wouldn't be able to see the body.

Unless Zhuang Yanzheng helps to put in a word.

However, Zhuang Yanzheng did not reply to the message.

Su Miaoyi sat by the stove, waiting for his news, but instead of news, she received Ji Sheng and Cai Qinglian instead.

The Maybach stopped at the entrance.

All the relatives went out to greet them.

Su Miaoyi didn't want to move.

Cheng Yong and Ge Yu did not go out either.

Cheng Jue sat down next to Su Miaoyi and asked, "Why are they here?"

"Shut up," Cheng Yong said. "That's rude."

Cheng Jue fell silent.

Su Miaoyi and he exchanged a glance, but neither of them spoke.

Although they are relatives, they don't actually have any contact with each other.

Ji Sheng's father and Cheng Yong's mother share the same grandfather and are cousins.

Actually, as we've gotten to this point, even those who were once close aren't really that close anymore.

At that time, Ji Sheng's career was at its peak, and he had almost severed ties with these relatives.

Later, when he went into business, he had the help of the Cai family, and he didn't know who these relatives were.

Now they know to visit relatives.

They were ushered into the house.

Cheng Jue stood up.

Su Miaoyi glanced at Ji Sheng and Cai Qinglian, but didn't move.

Cai Qinglian's smile almost froze as she walked over and said, "Miaomiao, we agreed to go home for the New Year and then come over together on the first day of the Lunar New Year. But look at you, you insisted on coming over first. You're closer to your uncle and aunt."

“My uncle and aunt raised me for so many years, of course I’m close to them.” Su Miaoyi didn’t even look up. “Besides, who told you that?”

Cai Qinglian choked for a moment.

Su Miaoyi added, "I can't help you with your problem, please leave. Don't ruin my grandparents' floor with those high heels."

Thank you everyone for your donations, monthly tickets, recommendations, and favorites.
