Chapter 39 Things are turning around

An Min frowned slightly and turned to look at Liang Yi.

The lights in the room had long been off, and the moonlight was blocked out by the curtains.

In the darkness, they couldn't see each other's faces clearly, but Liang Yi still caught the concern in An Min's tone.

He turned to the side, and in the boundless darkness, his eyes met An Min's.

"I'm too lazy to boil water. I can handle it, it's fine."

Liang Yi had a burning anger inside him that couldn't be quenched without cold water.

But Liang Yi couldn't possibly say that to An Min.

If I say it, doesn't that mean I'm preoccupied with those kinds of things?

She already said she wasn't prepared...

"It gets chilly at night, so don't take cold showers anymore."

Anmin thought about it for a moment, but still said it: "It would be so uncomfortable if I got sick."

Liang Yi hummed in agreement, sounding quite pleased.

After Anmin closed her eyes, she suddenly realized something.

Good heavens! What on earth did she just say?!

So ashamed of myself.

……

Ten days passed in the blink of an eye.

Anmin was so busy that she barely had time to breathe, and her face got tanned. If it weren't for the lake, she probably would have become a dark-skinned girl.

But looking at the ground beneath my feet, I felt very happy.

The soil that used to be so hard it could break a fingernail can now crumble when you squeeze it with your fingers.

Although it's far from being truly soft and fertile soil, the dry grass roots struggling to emerge from the cracks seem to quietly add a touch of green vitality to this despairing land.

The sorrow on the faces of the elderly in Dongxiang Village has lessened somewhat.

Village Chief Wang would stroll around the fields every day with his hands behind his back, grabbing a handful of soil and rubbing it again and again, until a genuine smile finally appeared on his deeply lined face.

"It's softened, it's really softened a lot! Teacher An, your method... it really works!"

Several elderly men who were still able to move nodded in agreement, their cloudy eyes regaining a glimmer of hope.

Everyone privately said that as long as some grass could grow, even the cheapest weeds, it would prove that the land could actually come back to life, and then they would dare to try planting seeds.

Anmin's life in the village has become much better.

It used to be polite but a little distant, but now it's different.

If someone makes a bowl of wild vegetable porridge that isn't too harsh on the throat, they'll definitely save a bite for her.

An old lady made a pair of thick insoles and insisted on giving them to her, saying that her feet wouldn't be cold after wearing them.

When Anmin happily shared these things with Liang Yi, Liang Yi would also praise her.

"However, you need to be more careful. Everyone is afraid of being poor. If someone takes something, you won't be able to say anything."

Liang Yi said this while serving An Min some food.

His subtle reminder dispelled Anmin's joy.

In fact, Liang Yi's reminder was very accurate; An Min was blinded by her happiness.

"I see."

She smiled slightly and thanked Liang Yi.

Sure enough, after only two days of comfort, new troubles came knocking one after another.

The soil has softened a bit, but the appetite has grown accordingly.

In the past, when water was poured on the plants, it would disappear with a splash, and Anmin would feel sorry that the water was wasted.

Now, the water seeps in more slowly, but it takes more water to thoroughly irrigate the same size plot of land.

The water level of the small lake in her space was visibly dropping.

The information also indicates that it will take at least a month for the lake to return to its original water level after restoration.

Every time she secretly fetched water, watching the water surface get further and further away from the shore, Anmin felt as if her heart was being torn apart.

If you water it too little, all your previous efforts will be wasted, and the land will turn back into that hard, rocky soil.

But we've watered too much, and the lake is about to dry up. Who knows what will happen to this land in a month?

Will this half-reformed land revert to its original state?

This meticulous calculation was giving her a headache.

However, these troubles could not be told to Liang Yi, much less to the villagers of Dongxiang Village.

Anmin could only suffer in silence by herself.

With the land showing some improvement, everyone's morale soared.

But then, they started arguing about what to plant.

Old Wang and several other experienced farmers who had spent their entire lives farming were determined to grow the millet they were most familiar with.

This thing is stable, and they know how to take care of it.

"Teacher An, it's not that I don't believe you,"

The old village chief rubbed his rough hands, his brows furrowing into a knot.

“Our ancestors have relied on this to survive for generations! Your little seed… looks too precious, but if it doesn’t work, we can’t afford to wait! During this lean season, a delay can take a whole year!”

Anmin knew perfectly well that the unassuming wheat and corn seeds in the space were the key to high yield and drought resistance.

Those grape seeds are even more valuable; they can be turned into money in the long run.

But persuading these elderly people, who are terrified of hunger and poverty, to abandon the traditional crops they consider their "lifeline" and risk planting these new ones is a challenge.

This is even more difficult than softening this hard ground in the first place.

Trust has been established, but the clash of ideas is the real hard rock that hurts people.

So Anmin thought that she would divide the land out later, and she only needed a small piece as an experimental field.

Anmin genuinely wanted to improve the farmland in Dongxiang Village, and she didn't want the land she had just developed to run into problems again.

Before the matter of the land and seeds could be settled, something even more infuriating happened to Anmin.

That evening, An Min was squatting at the edge of the field waiting for Liang Yi, taking the opportunity to check the soil moisture with the last bit of daylight.

In the blink of an eye, she caught a glimpse of a shadowy figure approaching the small bucket she usually secretly used to mix water with.

That's Zhaodi's mother.

She quickly scooped up a full ladle of water with a gourd ladle and turned to slip away.

"Zhaodi's mother!"

Anmin called out instinctively.

The woman's back stiffened, and she almost dropped the ladle in her hand, spilling a lot of water.

She turned around abruptly, her face filled with panic and embarrassment, her lips trembling as she stammered, "Teacher An... I... I... Zhao Di has a fever, a really high fever, and I just wanted to... just wanted to wipe her body..."

Looking at her sallow face and evasive eyes, and then at the water level in the bucket which was noticeably lower, Anmin felt both angry and bitter.

What angered them was that the water meant to save the land had been stolen, and what saddened them was the desperate look on Zhao Di's face.

She opened her mouth, the words of reproach swirling in her throat, but ultimately she didn't say them, only letting out a deep sigh.

"The child is more important... Go quickly."

The village of Dongxiang is short of water; if you need water, you have to go to the well not far from the camp.

It's at least two kilometers round trip.

Otherwise, Anmin wouldn't have borrowed Liang Yi's car to fetch water back and forth.

This little bit of water is nothing, but Anmin is worried that Zhaodi's mother will think that this water is different from other water.

What if she discovers the secret in the water...

That's still too risky.

An Min sighed. Liang Yi was absolutely right back then.

"What are you thinking about? You've been sighing the whole time."

A clear male voice came from behind. Anmin turned her head and met a pair of smiling eyes.

Her breath hitched, her eyes wide with shock.

How could it be...him?

Readers have said that this kind of timing will get you attacked, hehe.
