American Hunting: Starting with Solitary Life in the Wilderness

Chapter 29 The Harvest After Testing the Arrow

Chapter 29 The Harvest After Testing the Arrow
In the following days, apart from collecting fuel for the winter, Lin Yu'an devoted almost all his time to practicing archery and exploring the surrounding environment.

His five newly made beaver bone arrows felt better than hunting arrows with metal arrowheads.

Through his recent intensive archery practice, he keenly sensed that his archery skills were completely different from before.

Vision is like a cleaned lens, with distant details clearly visible! Distance judgment is as precise as if it had a built-in rangefinder.

Today, Lin Yu-an plans to try his luck in a place that's a little further away.

The sun was shining brightly, and there was no breeze; it was the perfect time to go hunting.

"Guys, after a few days of getting used to them, I've got a really good feel for these new bone arrows."

Lin Yu'an carried a quiver on his back, containing three of his favorite beaver bone practice arrows and six metal-tipped hunting arrows, while tightly gripping a 50-pound American hunting bow in his hand.

"Today, we won't shoot at the grass targets. Instead, we'll go to a more remote area of the camp to test the power of these new arrows in a real battle. Hopefully, we'll gain some insights."

He walked upstream along the stream, and with his enhanced senses, he was able to catch many subtle sounds in the forest.

The rustling of the wind through the needles, the chirping of pigeons in the distance, and even the rustling of small animals moving about.

After walking for almost two hours, at the edge of a spruce forest, he suddenly stopped and listened intently.

"Gugu...Gugu..."

A familiar and rhythmic call came from behind the bushes not far away!

"It's a grouse!"

Lin Yu'an's eyes lit up instantly. He lowered his voice and said to the camera, "Judging from the sound, there's more than one!"

He drew a beaver bone arrow from the quiver and gently placed it on the bowstring.

Although these bone arrows are not as sharp as metal arrowheads, Lin Yu'an is in excellent form with them! He'll also test their power.

For birds like grouse, which are small and have poor defenses, a single shot is enough to kill them.

He didn't go straight through the bushes, but first observed the surrounding terrain. The bushes were quite dense, and approaching them directly would easily alert the enemy.

"At times like these, a little strategy is needed."

A confident smile curved Lin Yu'an's lips.

He picked up a few pebbles from the ground, then quietly circled around to the side and behind the bushes, estimating the distance.

Suddenly, he forcefully threw a small pebble in his hand towards the bush on the other side, away from himself!
"Plop!" A pebble landed on a fallen leaf in the distance, making a soft sound.

Almost simultaneously, the calls of the grouse in the bushes paused for a moment.

Immediately afterwards, two plump spruce grouse with grayish-brown feathers were indeed attracted by the commotion and cautiously poked their heads out, looking in the direction where the stones had fallen!
They were completely unaware that Lin Yu'an, who was behind them, had slowly drawn back the bowstring.

Lin Yu'an was extremely focused. He used his "sixth sense" to accurately predict the position of one of the grouse's bodies by observing the trajectory of its head movements.

"Whoosh-!"

The beaver bone arrow was released from the bowstring, flying accurately over a distance of more than ten meters with a slight whooshing sound!
"Pfft!"

A dull, soft sound!

The bone arrow struck the grouse squarely! The immense impact sent it staggering forward a few steps, letting out a series of mournful cries, before it flapped its wings and collapsed to the ground.

The other grouse was startled by this sudden turn of events, letting out a panicked "coo" and about to flap its wings and flee—

But Lin Yu'an was even faster!
Almost at the same time as the first arrow was fired, his left hand had already drawn a second beaver bone arrow from the quiver with lightning speed!
The movements of nocking the arrow, drawing the bow, and aiming were executed with effortless grace! It was as if they had been practiced a thousand times!
"Whoosh—!" The second arrow followed immediately!

The grouse, which had just flapped its wings and was less than half a meter off the ground, suddenly stopped in mid-air and then, as if grabbed by an invisible hand, plummeted straight down from the sky!
The second bone arrow struck its body accurately!

Two arrows in quick succession, both hitting their mark!
"Nice!" Lin Yu'an quickly stepped forward.

He first examined the first grouse; the bony arrowhead had already pierced its neck deeply, killing it instantly.

Then he went to the second grouse, and the situation was similar; a bone arrow pierced its chest and abdomen, which was also a fatal wound.

This grouse is slightly smaller in size, and its feathers shimmer with a soft sheen in the sunlight. The feathers on its neck and chest, in particular, show a faint metallic blue-green hue from certain angles, which is quite beautiful.

Lin Yu-an picked up a plump grouse in each hand and proudly waved it in front of the camera.

"Two arrows, two grouse! My homemade beaver bone arrows, combined with my archery skills, are quite powerful!"

"I feel incredibly strong right now! Who else can compare!"

"It looks like these are two grouse in love. I'm sorry to have disturbed your romance."

He tied the two grouse together with rattan and hung them around his waist.

"This will make dinner delicious! Now that we have a clay pot, we can make grouse soup! Just thinking about it makes my mouth water."

As Lin Yu-an walked back, he shared his hunting experiences with the camera.

"Actually, there are some tricks to dealing with small prey that aren't particularly wary."

"Just like how I use pebbles to distract it and draw its attention, the success rate will be greatly increased, provided that your archery skills are up to par."

Back at the shelter, Lin Yu'an placed the two heavy grouse on a clean, flat stone slab and began his long-awaited "culinary creation."

He first processed the first grouse, carefully plucking its feathers and removing its internal organs. He did not discard the internal organs, but intended to keep them for other uses.

Then break the grouse into several large pieces and some loose pieces of meat, and take out the small earthenware pot you made yourself.

"I'll use it to make a delicious grouse and Jerusalem artichoke soup!"

Place the chicken pieces into an earthenware pot, add enough stream water, and then select a few pieces from the stored Jerusalem artichokes, peel off the skin, cut them into chunks, and put them into the pot as well.

Secretly add some concentrated chicken broth hidden in the space, and a piece of chopped ginger to remove the fishy smell.

Finally, openly add a small handful of salt and the wild berries that were previously collected and dried.

The earthenware pot was placed steadily on the round opening of the stove, allowing the flames from the combustion chamber below to directly heat the bottom of the pot.
