Chapter 37 Guarding the Elevator

Chapter 37 Guarding the Elevator (New book, please vote!)
In just half a day, it's impossible to really learn anything, much less train a novice into a gun expert.

They only had two magazines, which they had to use for missions, so they couldn't practice.

Under the patient and even somewhat repetitive instruction of the girl in the black hoodie, Han Su only learned the most basic actions such as safety, magazine changing, holding the gun, and aiming.

It was already five o'clock when a staff member came to remind them. They all followed him into a room, where they saw someone already sitting in a chair waiting.

He was a chubby guy wearing small glasses. He seemed to be the same age as Han Su, with a very childish face. Now, he seemed to be trying hard to pretend to be very professional and authoritative, but unfortunately, the effect was not good. No matter how tense his expression was, he still looked like an amateur.

Standing in front of him were the camouflage-clad man who had come from the military and several other trainees who had been on the same mission as Han Su.

Especially when the camouflage-clad man stood in front of him, his posture straight and as firm as steel, it made the chubby guy look like an unlucky passerby, while the camouflage-clad man was the professional executor.

"Have you brought all your weapons and equipment?"

When the chubby boy saw these people approaching, his slightly uneasy expression softened a bit. He then said with a tense expression, "We'll set off in half an hour."

"In this test, I am not only your referee and one of the examiners, but also your bodyguard, ready to deal with any unexpected situations. In addition, I am also your captain, responsible for issuing orders!"

"do you understand?"

Han Su nodded subconsciously, and the camouflage man next to him shouted, "Understood!"

The chubby boy picked at his ear, gave him a resentful look, then his gaze fell on Han Su's face. He said, "If you have any questions before the mission starts, I will choose to answer the ones that I think are in accordance with the rules. But after the mission starts, no one is allowed to speak!"

"You will each be provided with a walkie-talkie, but only I have the authority to use it to make external communications, understand?"

"..."

This time, everyone answered loudly, "Understood!"

"it is good!"

The chubby boy waved his hand and said, "Full of energy, let's go!"

The group of trainees immediately followed the chubby boy out of the Disaster Management Bureau. When they saw the night sky outside, they felt that their experiences over the past few days were somewhat surreal.

Two black armored vehicles were already waiting at the door. They were completely black with no other markings or names except for a twisted snake painted on the right door.

They boarded the vehicle, which immediately started silently, taking them through the streets under the cover of night. The bustling neon lights and diverse crowds outside the window contrasted sharply with the oppressive silence inside the vehicle.

Although the chubby boy said they could ask questions, they knew very little about the overall mission and had no idea where to begin.

Around 9:30 p.m., the group arrived at their mission destination and got off the vehicle one by one.

Looking up, a fifty-story building seemed to pierce the night sky. All the windows of the building were dark, except for the dim light in the lobby on the first floor.

At this hour, when cattle and horses are at their most active, the building seems empty; it's pitch black and you can't see a soul in sight.

"Let's go!"

The chubby guy had the driver park the car, and he, Han Su, the camouflage-clad man, and several other trainees each loaded their pistols and walkie-talkies before entering the building.

The elevators in the building were now out of service, with only one still lit up. The chubby boy led them onto the elevator and went straight to the 39th floor. Then, using the walkie-talkie, he ordered someone to stop the elevator as well, and then they arrived at Section B.

It was pitch black here. There were four elevators, but they were all completely out of service, and there wasn't a soul in sight.

There are only a few chairs placed here.

The chubby guy pulled out a chair and positioned it facing an elevator on the left side of Block B. He then picked up a walkie-talkie and reported that the temporary team members and their leader, Zhao Da'er, were in position and waiting for the mission to begin.

Then, after testing the signal, it was reported that there were no abnormalities in the surrounding area. I kept my watch on and waited patiently.

Then, there is no more.

Both the mission envelope and the chubby boy's instructions indicated that this was their mission. Each person had a chair, positioned to the left and right, staring intently at the elevator in front of them.

It's a silly mission. In a building that has been emptied of people, you have to remain silent and stare at an elevator that looks like it's been shut down. As instructed, you can't let go of your gun, and no one can take their eyes off the elevator at the same time.

It started at 10 p.m. and lasted until 3 a.m.

If any living thing appears inside the elevator, no matter who it is, shoot it immediately.

Looking at his digital watch, it wasn't even 10 p.m. yet. Han Su finally couldn't help but ask in a low voice, "Why are we waiting for the elevator here?"

Among the trainees, some were already on edge. The camouflage-clad man, who was sitting upright, heard the commotion and immediately turned to look at Han Su, saying stiffly, "Our responsibility is to carry out the mission, not to ask questions."

These words not only reprimanded Han Su, but even the chubby boy was a little confused.

After a while, he whispered, "I don't think I forgot to tell you that we can ask questions before starting the mission, right?"

“Yes.” Han Su said, “The mission starts at ten o’clock, and there are still thirty minutes left.”

"That's it."

The chubby guy sighed and said, "This is our task tonight. In fact, it will be the majority of the tasks you will face when you officially start working as executives of the Disaster Management Bureau."

"It's not just you who are not used to it."

He sounded a little regretful as he said this, his voice filled with helplessness: "One walkie-talkie and one pack of cigarettes, sitting there all day long. When my family found out I got into this department, they thought I was going to have a great career. They never imagined I'd be doing this kind of lousy work every day."

Han Su frowned and said, "So, what's so strange about this elevator? Why are we keeping an eye on it?"

As soon as the question was asked, the camouflage-clad men next to him visibly perked up their ears to listen.

The chubby boy hesitated for a moment, seemingly considering whether he could answer the question, then he whispered, "Do you know how many people have gone missing from this building this month?"

Han Su immediately chimed in, "How much?"

The chubby boy said, "Five!"

Only 5?

Han Su was unsure whether he should feign surprise to cooperate with him.

"and……"

The chubby guy emphasized, speaking mysteriously, "It was only after our department received the report and notified the investigators to come and collect evidence that we confirmed five people were missing. But before we received the report, who knows how many people disappeared here without leaving a record?"

"Of course, the missing people are just a number. For this city, they are just a drop in the ocean and have little impact."

"Do you know who we're guarding here with guns on?"

"..."

Finally, one of the trainees couldn't hold back any longer and started to chime in: "Who is it?"

The chubby boy lowered his voice and stared intently at the dark gap in the elevator: "It's someone who came out of the elevator."

"come out?"

Han Su looked at the elevator.

In terms of appearance, it is no different from the elevators in ordinary office buildings, and even looks a bit old. It is simply embedded in the wall, standing alongside the other elevators.

Most importantly, the elevator was clearly out of power; the text field was completely black.

This building had long been under close surveillance by the security department, and all staff members were completely evacuated from the building by 6 p.m.

There's no one here, the power's off, so who are they guarding with guns, and who are they shooting at?
"come out……"

One of the trainees felt a chill run down his spine and stammered, "Who came out?"

"weird."

The chubby boy enjoyed the timid look of the newbie, smiled, and said, "It's something that's always trying to infiltrate our real world. Most of our work from now on will be dealing with this."

"If there are monsters in this elevator, why are we bothering to have people guarding it?"

Hearing his answer, everyone felt uneasy, but Han Su's question surfaced: "Why not just seal the elevator with cement?"

"The building has been blown up; bury it immediately!"

"Or send an armed force over, armed with guns and rocket launchers, and aim them at the elevator..."

"..."

"it's useless."

The chubby boy said, "Since an elevator that has lost power will still run at some point, and even in an empty building, people will still come out of this elevator and blend into the crowd outside, sealing it with cement will not have any effect."

"This thing has the ability to distort reality; it doesn't make any sense."

"All we can do is follow the investigators' advice, stay here at this specific time, and shoot at any living thing that comes out of this elevator that shouldn't be running."

"Humans are the most efficient and cost-effective resource among all the ways to deal with the bizarre."
