Chapter 11, Part 11: The Ghost Wolf Beast, I'm sorry.
"If there's anything wrong, you can go find your school board member Deng Kai. Anyway, getting a high score from me isn't easy. If you're just wasting your time on training, you might as well go back to school and read some magic books. There's no need to come to this dangerous post station!" Zhan Kong's voice suddenly turned serious, and his smiling face instantly transformed into a fierce and menacing figure.
After hearing this, the teachers' faces turned pale and then red, and they all felt that this year's college entrance examination pass rate was doomed.
"Of course, I will personally award a reward to the team or individual who completes the bounty. The reward is a defensive magical artifact," Zhan Kong raised his voice and continued.
This promise inspired the top students who wanted to give up, and even Chen Hao was unusually excited. Although this worst defensive magic tool was not as good as his own iron armor, it was still worth nearly 50 yuan.
At this point, he was so poor that he couldn't even afford to eat. Having repeatedly asked his family for money, he desperately needed an income to prove himself. Thinking of this, a cold glint flashed in his eyes.
Ghost Wolf Beast! I'm so sorry!
……
This training was completed entirely by the students independently, without teachers or instructors, and only a map marking the mission locations served as a guide.
Chen Hao took the map, took a picture with his phone, and then set off without saying a word. Mo Fan and Zhang Xiaohou immediately followed, and soon more students followed, until the group had grown to twenty people.
Three days later, led by Chen Hao, the group overcame all obstacles, leaped over mountains, traversed jungles, and crossed valleys, finally arriving at the entrance to Baicao Valley marked on the map.
Chen Hao was focused on completing the mission as quickly as possible and didn't show much enthusiasm for those who had come with him. Aside from sleeping and resting, he spent almost all his time traveling. What took ten days to traverse thirty kilometers of mountain road in the original story, he managed to compress into three days.
And this was only because he deliberately slowed down. If he had traveled at full speed, he could have arrived within a day.
……
"Boss Zhan Kong, Group 1 has passed the test. That guy in the tin can is simply inhuman. He carried hundreds of kilograms of equipment and ran faster than a wind mage. Besides him, Mo Fan, Zhang Xiaohou, Zhou Min and others also performed exceptionally well."
In a camouflaged tent in the dense forest below the cliff, a military mages were reporting the situation to Zhan Kong.
If the students saw this now, they would probably be dumbfounded—what they thought was a completely free-range practical activity was actually a scene where almost all the teachers and instructors were comfortably lying on the grass at the observation point at the foot of the mountain, drinking tea and eating snacks, watching these chicks traverse the jungle.
"Oh?" Chief Instructor Zhan Kong raised an eyebrow slightly, a hint of interest flashing in his eyes.
"Iron Can" was the nickname they gave Chen Hao behind his back. His full-body alloy heavy armor was so conspicuous that it was hard not to notice him. Originally, they didn't think much of Chen Hao; such equipment was simply asking for trouble in the jungle and mountains. They even bet that the kid wouldn't last more than two days before abandoning his armor and running away.
But who would have thought that this was actually a humanoid beast! Even these mid-level military mages, whose physiques had long surpassed those of ordinary people, admitted that they could not carry that kind of equipment over mountains and valleys.
"Write down his name, and give him a high score after the mission," Zhan Kong instructed Pan Lijun, the female assistant instructor beside him.
"He's a promising talent. We'll see if we can recruit him into the military." He nodded to himself.
Tang Yue, sitting to the side, was also drawn to the attention. As a practical instructor at the magic academy, she had a very accurate assessment of her students' physical abilities. For a novice mage to display such unreasonable physical prowess was simply outrageous.
……
Baicao Valley is not a valley with a single entrance, but rather a series of branching paths and narrow passages. To enter the valley, one must traverse this intricate mountain path.
"Damn it, is this road ever going to end?"
"I can't go on anymore, can I rest for a bit?" After days of travel, the team members were exhausted. Even Zhang Xiaohou and Mo Fan, who were in relatively good physical condition, were pale and complaining.
"Chen Hao, why don't you take a break?" Zhou Min came up and suggested. This wasn't the first time she'd suggested taking a break in the past few days. She had a strong sense of responsibility; although she wasn't the official team leader, she always subconsciously took on the role of leader.
Unfortunately, everyone followed Chen Hao voluntarily, and Chen Hao's attitude was clear from the beginning: follow if you want, and don't force yourself if you can't keep up.
He refused the suggestion to rest several times, and although Zhou Min was dissatisfied, she could only suppress it silently.
In her opinion, their group was progressing far ahead of the other teams; no one else was working as hard as they were.
Chen Hao glanced at the map but still did not agree.
"This is the last stretch. Just grit your teeth and hang in there. You can rest once you get through this area of thorny vines. If you want a high score, keep up with me. The last two kilometers."
As soon as he finished speaking, he stepped into the area covered with vines.
In this area, thick vines intertwine and crisscross, some hanging down from above like giant pythons coiled around the mountainside; others lying across the ground like venomous snakes, creating a complex and intricate network that makes one feel as if they've fallen into a snake pit the moment they step in.
And that is indeed the case—these demonic vines are not ordinary plants; they possess a certain degree of sentience. Once they sense a creature approaching, they will entwine around the target as if it were alive, strangling it to death!
The group was exhausted. Not long after they stepped inside, a student screamed in pain as his ankle was entangled in vines.
"Fire mage, burn them all!" Chen Hao roared, suddenly unsheathing the giant sword from his back and swinging it with all his might. Each strike severed large sections of vines, instantly saving several people.
"Fire! Burn!" Star trails flashed in Zhou Min's hand as fire magic was rapidly formed.
Already exuding a heroic aura, she now seemed to possess an even more valiant air under the firelight.
With a "bang," a blazing flame shot up from her palm and was flung out, landing in the thicket of demonic vines.
Flames swept across the area, spreading like a tidal wave. The vines writhed wildly as if struck by lightning, eventually turning into charred remains.
"Mo Fan, you're a fire mage too, what are you standing there for?" Chen Hao looked at Mo Fan, who was slacking off to the side.
"Isn't the squad leader here? I'm just worried about starting a wildfire and causing trouble for the instructors." Mo Fan chuckled awkwardly, making up an excuse to cover up his desire to conserve magic energy.
"You overestimate your little flame. If starting a wildfire were that easy, all the land demons would have been wiped out long ago." Chen Hao said disdainfully. "Keep it burning high, and if anything goes wrong, just say I started it!"
Left with no other choice, Mo Fan was forced to take action. Only then did everyone realize that he was truly hiding his true strength, and that his fire magic was far more skillful and seemingly more powerful than Zhou Min's.
Zhou Min gritted her teeth, her heart filled with a thousand complaints.
With two fire mages leading the way, the group quickly passed through the demon vine area and arrived inside the valley. The scenery inside the valley was quite nice, with a palm-shaped lake to the south and a raised mountain pass to the north.
The old lair of the one-eyed demon wolf is located at the mountain pass; in fact, it can be seen at a glance from the center of Baicao Valley.
