Reborn Cat Sheriff
Chapter 79 Wildfire
Chapter 79 Wildfire
The two girls fussed over it for a long time.
They playfully fight while washing up, while changing clothes, and even while blow-drying their hair, having a great time.
Lin Ge watched from a distance, protecting him, and gradually stopped feeling embarrassed.
I just treat them like two little daughters, their mischievousness giving me a headache.
Seeing the two girls lying on the bed comparing their nails, Lin Ge jumped onto the bed and tapped each of them on the head. Then he turned off the light and squatted by the door to supervise them personally.
Anyone who dares to utter another word will be beaten up!
Lin Ge glared fiercely.
The two children complained once, then stopped causing trouble.
Moreover, children fall asleep very quickly. In the darkness, two children huddled together and whispered something, their voices gradually lowering until they fell asleep in no time.
Lingo stayed quietly for a while, until the two children were completely asleep, then stretched, twitched his tail, and slowly lay down next to the food bowl in the corner of the living room.
The cat food tasted so-so, but the freeze-dried bits mixed in were quite crunchy. He used his paw to pick up the freeze-dried bits and popped them into his mouth one by one like beans, and suddenly he felt the obvious difference between a pet and a stray cat.
Spacious house, delicious food, meticulous care, and tender pampering—no wonder some cats go to great lengths to find themselves a human. It really does feel great to have a home.
Protected from wind and rain, with clean food and fresh water, and air conditioning for both hot and cold weather...
He yawned groggily, then rested his head on his hands and closed his eyes to doze off. To be honest, he couldn't quite fall asleep; the slightly unfamiliar environment didn't feel as safe and well-lit as the police station, which provided a sense of security day and night…
'Crash...'
The leaves outside rustled in the wind.
Lin Ge was suddenly awakened at some point. His ears twitched, and he vaguely heard footsteps and whispering voices.
Although the residential area wasn't as quiet as the police station's backyard, and people coming and going were inevitable, the deliberately low-pitched, light footsteps still interrupted Lin Ge's dozing, causing him to sensitively raise his head.
"Thief?"
Lin Ge slowly walked to the balcony, lifted a corner of the curtain, and peeked out to look down.
It was quite quiet outside, and the streetlights were blocked by the lush foliage, making the surroundings appear dark.
However, in Lin Ge's line of sight, he clearly saw a dark figure sneaking into the flower bed below the first floor of the building next door, slowly moving towards the window of the building.
This man was quite patient, taking each step carefully. He seemed to know exactly where the security cameras were in the neighborhood, and therefore deliberately concealed himself. He slowly moved to the window of that house and stood still.
Seemingly having heard something, the man opened his mouth and muttered a curse under his breath.
After a while, he squatted down and began to gather the withered grass and fallen leaves in the flower bed. Soon he had scooped up a small pile and piled it all under the window.
The man seemed to have considered fire prevention; he even patiently used his foot to create a firebreak around the haystack before looking around, taking out a lighter, and carefully lighting the dry haystack.
With a crackling sound, a small flame quickly ignited and expanded, turning into a bonfire billowing thick smoke.
The man coughed from the choking and quickly lowered his head to leave in a panic.
Lin Ge watched this scene quietly.
The presence of the flower bed prevented the wind from getting in. Fortunately, the burning pile of dry grass did not spread outwards; it quickly swelled into a large fire, crackling and burning for a while, before slowly dying down, leaving only a few dry branches still burning and sending up thick black smoke.
"What is the taste?"
"Fire?"
The building, which was filled with smoke, had its lights turned on on both the first and second floors.
Some people opened their windows to look down, while others grumbled and complained about being woken from their sweet dreams. When they saw the embers of the fallen leaves on the ground, the first-floor residents didn't think much of it and just reflexively looked up and shouted at the people upstairs.
"Which idiot threw that cigarette butt? Doesn't he know it's easy for fires to start this time of year? Holy crap, you scared the hell out of me!"
The shouting drew the light from upstairs, and people poked their heads out to discuss the situation: "It's really on fire! I thought it was my imagination. That person really went too far, throwing a cigarette butt downstairs is so rude..."
"Go to sleep, go to sleep. It's all over now that the fire is out. It's no big deal."
The group discussed amongst themselves, but seeing that the commotion wasn't too great, they quickly closed the windows and turned off the lights.
Only the man on the first floor, his face full of anger, went to fetch a basin of water and splashed it forcefully out the window, thus getting rid of the potential hazard that had woken him up.
The woman's comforting voice and the man's continued cursing could still be heard in the room, but they soon subsided.
The outside fell silent once again, with only Lin Ge still squatting motionless on the balcony.
He had a feeling this wouldn't end so easily. The arsonist had gone to such lengths; it couldn't be just about disturbing the sleepers on the first and second floors. Suddenly, the lights came on on the seventh floor next door, and someone came to the balcony. It was the silhouette of a woman, not very clear from below. She looked down for a moment, then spat down, before turning back inside and turning off the light.
"Is it her?"
Lin Ge had some doubts, but couldn't be sure for the time being.
However, one thing is foreseeable: if this arson is linked to the elevator installation, then the people in the neighboring building are likely to have plenty of drama to come.
People!
Lin Ge shook his head.
In the latter half of the night, nothing else happened.
Lin Ge slept quite well.
The ice mat that Zhang Yining's mother bought for him was more comfortable to sleep on than the sofa or the floor. The slightly swaying, icy sensation and the undulating curves of the water against his body made Lin Ge reluctant to open his eyes.
But when the alarm clock kept ringing, Lin Ge had no choice but to get up.
The two brats remained lying motionless in bed, turning off the alarm clock every time it rang and going back to sleep, looking like they were going to sleep forever.
Lin Ge gritted his teeth and jumped onto the bed, shoving the two girls' heads, but it was no use. Zhang Yining groggily opened her eyes, glanced at Lin Ge, then stretched out her arm to shoo him away before turning over and going back to sleep.
Hu Miao was somewhat more clear-headed, but only to a limited extent.
"Just ten more minutes of sleep!"
She mumbled something, then snuggled into Zhang Yining's arms, hugging her waist and curling up into a ball.
Still sleeping?
Lin Ge checked the time; it was already past seven o'clock.
The start time for school at Youcheng Elementary School is 7:30. There are only 20 minutes left, what's the point of sleeping?! He angrily grabbed Zhang Yining's long hair that was spread out on the pillow, wrapped a few strands around it, and pulled it back hard!
"ah!"
Zhang Yining screamed in pain.
Her body reacted instinctively, curling up and thrusting her knees upwards, which struck Hu Miao's chin, causing the girl to grunt.
The two girls rubbed their heads and chins, reluctantly getting out of bed. Zhang Yining glared at Lin Ge, about to explode, but was intimidated by Lin Ge's glaring eyes and could only obediently get out of bed to wash up, while the other turned around to change her clothes.
The two girls really didn't treat Lin Ge like a human being, and they didn't even shy away from things like changing clothes.
But Lin Ge had no intention of taking advantage of the situation; he decided not to look at what was improper and turned to go to the living room.
He helped the two girls check their schoolbags; their homework, water bottles, and access cards were all safely in place. Only then did he breathe a sigh of relief, sit down, wash his face with his paws, and wait for the two children to dawdle.
Fortunately, the two children realized it was getting late this time, so they stopped fighting and quickly cleaned up.
Just before leaving, Zhang Yining suddenly grabbed Lin Ge's tail: "Mimi! If we don't sleep, you can't sleep either! We agreed last night that you would come to school with us! Oh, and you have to pick us up tonight!"
"Let go!"
Lin Ge glared at Zhang Yining, but the girl was no longer afraid. It was as if Lin Ge, having stayed at her house, had become her cat.
Unable to persuade the girl, Lin Ge had no choice but to lower his head.
Following the two girls out the door, they continued their leisurely chatter the whole way. Lin Ge urged them several times, but they didn't seem to care. They arrived at the school gate just as the school alarm rang, then laughed and ran towards the cafeteria.
"What a... pain in the neck!"
Watching the two girls' retreating figures, Lin Ge sighed, finally relieved.
His morning nanny work was finally over, and he looked around, feeling a little bored.
Going to the police station is definitely out of the question; if someone blocks our way there, it will only cause trouble for Nie Guoqiang.
After thinking about it, Lin Ge turned around and went back. He was now even more curious about the house next to Zhang Yining's.
What will that auntie who harassed the first and second floors under the cover of night, trying to force them to compromise, do next? Does she realize that what she did can be considered a crime?
Although he had temporarily left the police station, Lin Ge did not intend to remain indifferent to these matters.
